I have been trying to figure out what the name of this game is I used to play in the mid 80's. it was a side-scrolling shooter and in it you were a guy with a jet pack (I think). You started on planet mercury and the idea was to work your way to Planet X or Pluto or something. each level took place on a planet. I could only make it to Venus and I always died.
Does anyone know this game?

Solar Warrior? http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?letter=&game_id=9613
I cheated and searched for "Solar" in the KLOV description.
Other possibilities:

That looks familiar, I was 9 at the time so my memory is hazy at best.
-
Just in case your memory is REALLY fuzzy, check out Gyruss too. ;D
-
Definitely not Gyruss.
-
Solar Jetman (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_Jetman:_Hunt_for_the_Golden_Warpship)? (you travel to each planet searching for pieces of the ship and if you damage your pod you have to make it back to your base with your jetpack)

That is not it either. All I remember is that you started on Mercury and you went from left to right. I think there was an end monster on each level to.

Forgotten Worlds (http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?letter=&game_id=7842)

negative on Forgotten Worlds. I played that before.

not sure if this was ever an arcade version but I used to play a game something like that called Rad Gravity (http://www.mobygames.com/game/adventures-of-rad-gravity/screenshots) on the nes.

That is it I think (It is also known as Solar Warrior)
One of those pictures reminded me of the Venus stage I couldn't get by.
Thanks all.

not a bad idea,i think trojan was the one for me :)
-
Yes Trojan I loved that one was too hard for me back then though never got past the second level. Should give it another blast now im older and wiser.
-
For me it was Crater Raider. I forgot the name of it too until I came across some screenshots...

Mine was lock'n'chase. Had a lump in my throat when the rom loaded (no 'Stiffy' jokes please Danny!). Been a mame monkey ever since....

One thing that still amazes me is finding out who created these games. So many were licensed out. While Atari had many hits of their own, most of the games I really got into were the Namco ones.
This game is one of many I've stumbled onto by Technos. Isn't it enough they pretty much invented the fighting game (Karate Champ), the beat-em-up (Vigilante, Double Dragon), and the wrestling game (tag-team wresling, Mat Mania)? Super Dodgeball and River City Ransom on the NES will always be classics too.
I have to admit that the first jet-pack game I thought of was Section Z. Capcom considers Section Z, Side Arms, and Forgotten Worlds to be the "Jet-pack Hero Trilogy".

Section Z....
ugh if I remember that correctly, it was nearly impossible to complete.
