Title: Help! Monitor all red!
Post by: gsoul on April 24, 2007, 12:53:19 am
So I dusted off my arcade machine after being in storage a year or so.

The reason it went into storage was because I plugged one of the game boards in the wrong way and blew the power supply and the board! :( Poor Mortal Kombat 4!!!

I took the PS to the local TV guide and he replaced about a dozen parts. I bring it home, turn it on and it goes!! woohoo!! mK3 in beautiful crisp colors.

I'm playing for like 5 mins, get up to 'Fatality' and I go to pull off Nightwolf's 'Babality'. Suddenly everything goes RED. WTF?

I get out the trusty deaussing wand and this doesnt change it.

WTF is wrong with my poor machine?? :(

Just to clarify, I turned the monitor off and unplugged it for about 40mins, turned it back on and it works again. i thought it was fixed, but after 10 mins, the color (green?) dropped out again! :(

Now its like looking at a red/purple mess again. :(

Its a Kortek board and a samsung monitor I believe. Can't get many more details. Its still got the LAI warranty stickers on it, so I guess its whatever is the default in the old MK LAI cabinets.

you have either a bad solder joint on the neck card or a drive transistor breaking down,if it floods with one colour only then its likely to be a drive transistor faulty

It actually sounds as if the green is dropping out and leaving the red and blue ("red/purple mess").

I'm going to assume that you tried adjusting the color pots before posting this question?  Grant is correct that the drive transistor could be bad, as well as the pots controlling both the green drive and bias, and solder joints being faulty.  You could also have a bad connection with your green signal wire on your video connector or edge connector.  It could be a bent pin on the neck socket.  It could be a problem with the green gun in your tube.  It could be your video processing chip on your neckboard.

Since it sounds like your technical expertise may be limited in this area (and monitors are a different animal and should be treated carefully), it might be a good idea to return to your "local TV guide" and have them fix it for you.

By the way, this isn't the same MK board you blew up, is it?
