I've seen this in other console forums and it's always interesting. A thread where people mention and discuss what games they are currently working through.
I'm currently working through Zelda Oracle of Seasons on the GBC.
Just got Mario Kart Double Dash and I'm working on unlocking all the stuff.
Also, I'm about 45% done with Lego Star Wars II.
What are you playing?
-
GCN games on the Wii:
Just finished Eternal Darkness
Playing Metriod: Prime
Also playing Mario 64 on the Wii Virtual Console.
-
Also playing Mario 64 on the Wii Virtual Console.
Which controller? Gamecube?
-
Yeah, using the Gamecube controller. Got it nice and cheap from Disc Replay -- works great. I know the button scheme is fairly basic on Mario 64, but I'm wondering if the GCN controllers are better in general than the Wii Classic Controller when it comes to older games (taking cost into consideration).
-
Okay, just looked it up. The Wii classic controller is $20, and the gamecube controller I bought was $10. Not a big difference, but the gamecube controller works just fine.
-
The buttons, maybe, but the analog stick is critical to many parts of Mario 64. There are also a ton of specialized multipress sequences you're going to need. I can't imagine trying to pull that stuff off on a nunchuck.
-
You can't play Gamecube/N64 games with the nunchuck. You need either a Wii Classic controller or a Gamecube controller, I'm pretty sure. I think the Gamecube controller is the better option for N64 games, frankly, because the left analog stick is in the default position, whereas a Wii Classic controller is set up more like a Playstation controller, with the D-pad in the default position. This makes sense for SNES, NES, Genesis, TG-16 and Master System, but I think for N64 the Gamecube controller is probably best for most games (though mapping the N64 C buttons to the Gamecube's right analog stick would probably prove very problematic in a few games).
-
Problematic in Mario 64 specifically... if there is ever a game on any console that had stronger integration into the controller and every single potential use of it, it was Mario 64.
-
Oh . . . Forgot:
Wii: Twilight Princess, Rayman
Xbox: Lego Star Wars II (probably about the same as far as Chad), Psi Ops
I haven't played any videogames in more than a month. I'm in the middle of the busiest period of my entire life up to this point. There are just so damned many important things in my life right now vying for my attention that I can't begin to keep up. I can't wait for things to slow down in a month or so.
-
Problematic in Mario 64 specifically...
Actually, I think maybe not. Mario used those buttons for camera control exclusively, IIRC. I can't say for sure, as I've never played the Wii version of Mario 64, but in my head the C-stick would work just fine for camera control. Maybe MustardTent can give us his thoughts. The games I'm thinking it would cause a problem with are things like fighters, where those buttons did specific things. Obviously the worst-case scenario would be a game that required multiple C buttons to be pressed simultaneously, which would be impossible on the C-stick.
-
I think you're right, I misread what you had in there. The C stick probably would work fine for that.
Have you finished the story modes for Lego Star Wars II? I've done that and am now working on getting True Jedi for each level. This game takes forever to get near 100%.
-
Still the story mode, actually. My wife and I haven't had a chance to pick it up in two or three months, though, so I could be wrong about the percentages.
BTW, I didn't know Nintendo was upgrading any VC games, but in checking an IGN review to see if they mention controls I found this:
The Classic Controller handles well, mapping the C-Button camera functions to the second analog stick on the right, and feeling natural enough that the game's fun factor isn't harmed in the transition. A better fit, though, is a normal GameCube Controller, or a Wavebird. Almost every current Nintendo fan got a chance to play 2002's GameCube release, Super Mario Sunshine, and the comfort level of controlling our main mustachioed man with a Cube pad still feels natural from that adventure.
And Super Mario 64 has never looked this good before. Heralding a bright future full of graphically enhanced N64 titles, the Virtual Console version of Super Mario 64 features visuals vastly improved over its original cartridge release. This Mario runs in 480p, and is vibrant, crisp and totally smooth. The muddiness that plagued the N64 for years is gone now – it's almost worth downloading the game just to see how much better it looks now than 10 years ago.
Cool.

The c buttons were used to control the Mario 64 camera originally. The GCN controller puts this functionality on the yellow analog stick on the right. It's a little clumsy, but adjustments to the camera in that game are fairly gross.
The analog stick on the gamecube controller is fine. The real testament is that when I play Mario 64 using it, I don't feel like I am using the wrong controller.

Wii: SSX Blur - Need to bead 2 challenges (both 'ubertrick' based) to have all medals, beaten all the races though. Ubertricks are definitely my weak point on the game.
Metroid Prime - Pretty sure I'm at the last Boss which is a major PITA.
Wii Sports (Tennis) and Mariokart 64 are both getting a lot of time when the wife wants to play.
PC: Had given up on Battlefield 2 a while ago, but with the release of the Desert Conflict Mod, I've been sucked back in.
Pretty much everything else is random web games I spot at jayisgames.com.
-
I just started Poke'mon Diamond
and Wii sports.
Yesterday was a good day.
-
Recently finished God of War 2 for the ps2, and am currently playing Super Paper Mario. I also have the occasional game of Puzzle Quest on the DS and Enemy Territory on the PC (still the best team based multiplayer FPS out in my opinion)
-
Man, I'm way behind... the last non-arcade game I played was Battlefront on PS2 and Castlevania: Aria on GBASP... yikes.
-
Super Paper MArio
Zelda Twilight Princess
Kororinpa (spelling might be off, its the new wii marble game)
-
Go & Beatmania. Those are pretty consistent, nearly everyday.
Tiger Woods 2006, missile command, irritating maze (I just built a trackball box).
-
last night I played Team Fortress Classic for the first time in a couple years, that was fun.
various MAME snippets depending on the kids choices with the occasional dabble in genesis/SNES consoles with them.
As of today I'll be playing zelda twilight princess and wii sports.
I'd love to hear some player reviews about super paper mario and the wii marble game (saw a video on youtube about it, looks interesting. Reminds me of that tabletop game labyrinth that was around in the 80's.)
-
Well, sonofa...I had the cube controller in the wrong slot! So it does work on the VC games. Crazy Nintendo, numbering the slots the opposite way.
Playing Zelda Twilight Princess again here soon-beat it once two weeks ago. Wii Sports here and there.
Absolutely anticipating Metroid Prime: Corruption.
-
Playing Guitar Hero II for the 360. I just got four stars on a hard song, but I am stuck on the song "Woman". I can get about halfway through the song then the audience kicks me off the stage. My guitar skills need more work.
-
I just started Ultimate Spiderman on XBOX but I'm not sure if I'm going to get into it. Spiderman 2's controls were just sooooo much better. I do like the comic book animation though so we'll see.
Also, I'm still working through Guitar Hero 2... I'm about 3/4 through hard right now.
I am not sure how fast I'm going to be getting through any games recently due to a pretty much constant headache for over a week now though. Man is it frustrating... :timebomb:
-
Guitar Hero II for the 360 has taken up what little gaming time I have had lately. I got through it on the PS2, but am going at it again on the 360 heh. I'm a few songs into Expert right now, but I have to go back and 5 star probably a dozen or more songs on Hard... I got on a roll and stopped striving for 5 stars after a while.
Super Paper Mario got a lot of play time lately too, but I haven't had a nice chunk of time to devote to it in a week or so.
-
Currently playing:
Super Paper Mario (wii)
SMT:Nocturne (PS2)
How is kororinpa hoagie-one, I was thinking about purchasing that game.

I'm also playing GH2 on X360. I'm trying to reach PDB's career score of over 8 million (I'm at just over 7 million).

I'm giving Resident Evil 4 another try, and I'm starting to get the hang of the controls, but it seems like the game starts out unnecessarily hard. I mean, that chainsaw guy in the first town...to kill him I had to hit him with a grenade, then I still had to shoot him in the head a couple of times, and during that time the rest of the town is coming at me, seems like a bit much for a couple of minutes into the game.
Anyways, the first time I tried the game (a few months ago) I kept dieing in the first town, so I cursed the shooter on a console controller scheme and gave up, but everyone loves the game so much I decided to try it again. I've now finished the first chapter and am beginning to see why people like this game so much. I still don't care too much for the controls (give me a mouse and keyboard for a shooter anyday), but I'm getting better at them. Probably by the end of the next chapter I'll be quite good.
-
I need to try that one soon.

If my wife can get pretty good at it, then you can be assured that the controls get easier. Anyways, I think everyone who plays that game the first time gets their head handed to them by chainsaw man. It sets the tone, I think. ;Dm
-
You could also try the PC port of RE4, which has a graphics patch to make it look like the GameCube game and also a patch for using the mouse.
I haven't tried it yet, but will soon.
I'm playing Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow on the DS right now, but it seems like I'm the type of person lately just to play a game a little until I know what it's about, then I sort of stop. Lately, I did this with No One Lives Forever and Giants: Citizen Kabuto. I like both of the games a lot, but I went through about 25% of each of them and then just stopped.

If you only hang around near the entrance to the village and kill of the few folks who are hanging around, it goes to the bell ringing cut-scene and you don't have to fight the chainsaw lad. I found that out after about the 10th time of having my head lopped off... It also means you've got the grenades and shotgun ammo etc. for later in the game.
Oh and thanks to this thread I'm now massively addicted to Lego Star Wars 2 and getting more and more in the doghouse with the missus for not paying her enough attention
-
My house is so addicted to Lego Star Wars I may have to build a Lego Star Wars bartop. Possibly out of Lego.

Lego star wars would have been a KICK ASS 4 player arcade game back in the day.
-
It would be a kick ass 4 player console game, too, but sadly it's not. I'm not big on four player gaming but there have been times in my house we could definitely have benefitted from all four people playing at once.
-
All you RE4 people, if you are talking about the GCN version (don't know exactly what consoles it's available for), try Eternal Darkness (also a GameCube survival horror). It was the most fun I've had playing a game in a long time. IGN review (http://cube.ign.com/articles/363/363071p1.html): 9.6 out of 10.

PS2 version for me. The gamecube controller is HORRIBLE. I would never own that system.
-
Odd. I really like the GC controller and the PS controller is one of the primary reasons I have no use for the Playstation 1 or 2.

GC version for me (although I'm playing it on the Wii with a wavebird). The game was made for the GC controller and I remember the ps2 reviews said the ps2 controller didn't work as well for this game which is why I never picked it up for the ps2. I agree that the ps2 is a better controller for the average game, but generally not for games designed specifically for the GCs controller.
Also, I've already played through Eternal Darkness, great game.
-
The PS2 controls work exactly the same as all the other RE games - which were coincidentally designed for and played on the PS1 controller. ;)
I played RE4 on the GC when it first came out and just did not like the controller then either.

It could be the reviews I read when the ps2 version first came out were just biased toward the GC version :dunno All I know is that the button layout does seem to work very well in this game.
-
I find it very annoying that gamestop.com does not have Eternal Darkness listed.
-
Well, that game is from '02 -- may have to search a little for it. eBay has plenty, but they're all overpriced.
Does gamestop.com actually have all the info on stock? Maybe your local store actually does have it.
-
Yeah, I suspect gamestop.com only lists the games that are available via the website. The prices often vary from my local store, too.
-

It is listed. To be able to view used games go to a game you know they have, like guitar hero 2. Now scroll down and click where it reads "Show backordered used products that may be available in stores.". Now try searching for eternal darkness, it should work.
-
Niiice, that works. Thanks.
-
no problem, can I have some of your post count now ;D
-
I dont know if it was already mentioned but gamestop is running the buy 2 get 1 free special on all used games/hardware. Here is what I picked up:
SMT: Digital Devil Saga (PS2)
God of War 2 (PS2)
Trauma Center: Second Opinion (wii)
Psychonauts (PS2)
Ico (PS2)
Rule of Rose (PS2)
All for under $100.00, of course that is including the 10% off and about $20.00 worth of scam money ;D
-
What's the opinion on trauma center for the wii?
-
For what little I played of it (45 min) I think Trauma Center is great. I have heard people complain that it is not very long though.
-
I picked up Eternal Darkness last night and played through the first 40 minutes. Great sound, that's for sure, the graphics are pretty good for a 2002 game. So far, not so creepy, and I haven't seen any insanity effects yet.
-
That game isn't very creepy until the whole lovecraft thing kicks in. Even then not so creepy. There is one really good startle but I won't ruin it for you. I can almost guarantee it will get you though. The insanity effects are great the first couple of times they happen but after that they lose there novelty. Overall this is one of my favorite survival horrors. I like how all of these people throughout history are connected to this tome and I enjoy learning what fate it had brought them.
-
As the roman soldier, did you grab the green, blue, or red artifact? The choice you made greatly impacts game play.
As far as the insanity effects, some are a bit over-used, and can get a bit annoying. Just don't ruin all of them by looking up what they all are online.
-
So far I'm on the third person with no context as to why they are connected. Odd.
As the roman soldier I grabbed all four artifacts. There wasn't much choice, you had to use them all shortly afterwards.
So far my favorite horror/survival game has been D for the Saturn. That one got me many times. It was a bit more Myst than Resident Evil but still a fantastic game for its era. The one annoying part was that in order to beat it you had to play it all the way through in one sitting - no saves, and it took about 3 hours.
-
At the end of the roman soldier's level (Pious Augustus), you find yourself in a room with three choices: A red artifact (choosing this puts the game in 'hard' mode), a blue artifact (less hard), or a green artifact (easy). You are allowed to choose only one, as the moment you touch it you turn into a servant of a dark god (the red one, blue one, or green one), and that level is over.
-
Let's take this to PM. I don't want to spoil anything for anyone. I hate that.
-
I don't consider that a spoiler, as a premise to the game is to choose which dark god you're fighting. We can take this off-thread though.
-
Ordered GTA: SA yesterday because it's only $9 on amazon now. Can't go wrong at that price.
You could also try the PC port of RE4, which has a graphics patch to make it look like the GameCube game and also a patch for using the mouse.
I'm looking forward to this. Amazon says it'll be released to PC here in the states May 15th. I've got friends who can play FPS games with PS pads, but I can't imagine anything but mouse/keyboard for them so I'm waiting for the PC version. Just hope that my PC can handle the graphics, they look pretty sweet.
Yeah, I know amazon is a rip-off sometimes. But in my experience it is more often legit stuff than ebay so I don't mind so much.

NDS: Pokemon Diamond is eating up most of my time. I'm on my way to the third gym boss city. Have a pretty good team, for a change, but I'm getting rather tired of having to pass by battles of things I already own.
Wii: I had to start Twilight Princess over when my Wii died, so I'm not very far in it. I hope that will change when wife and kid go to Kansas. I'm also on a second season in Tiger Woods golf.
Picked up Eternal Darkness recently, not too far in it. I think that's my problem - I need to stick with one and get ALL THE WAY THROUGH IT before starting another.
-
I'm really surprised at how good and long Zelda Oracle of Seasons is... I mean, it's a Gameboy Color game.
-
Link's Awakening is also surprisingly good. It has awesome graphics for being originally a Gameboy Mono title. I also really like the music. Gameplay-wise, it's very similar to A Link to the Past.
-
I have that, along with Oracle of Ages and Metroid II, sitting on my desk waiting for me to finish Oracle of Seasons.
-

That game is my favorite Zelda game.
-
Right now, Pokemon Diamond and Pearl pretty much control my life.
-
I've mostly been sticking to Wii Sports and Wii Play. Twilight Princess is sitting there on the shelf because it requires too much of a time commitment. Busy, busy!
-
I'm stuck in Oracle of Seasons and it's pissing me off. :banghead:
-
I'm about to face the Elite 4 in Pokemon Diamond. I only have 7 pokemon left to collect out of the 150. I wanted to get a little closer to the final total before I fight the elite 4. Then I'll be ready to collect the Pokemon from the other valleys.
