Asus Bamboo Ecobook Computer (TreeHugger)
(((Huh. Too bad that's not a green Apple.)))
Link: Asus Bamboo Ecobook Computer (TreeHugger).
"...the new Ecobook. Its case is covered in bamboo, which I suppose is a statement, but the real show is inside. All of the plastic in it is labelled and recyclable; it is lined with cardboard; there are no paints, sprays or even electroplating used on its components. It looks like it is designed to be easily taken apart for self-service and easy upgrading of components, usually the downfall of notebooks. The bamboo is cute too."

Don't pick up Bruce Sterling's slack.

Bruce gets around quite a bit. I don't think I'm picking up anything for him. Thanks for the link, Tiger. It's nice to see there are conservationists behind the lines.

I wasn't talking to you, Bruce Sterling.

Aohh. Raaiiight.

How does covering a notebook in bamboo show that Asus is ecofriendly? didn't a bamboo tree have to die to make that laptop? Poor bamboo tree...

Shows what you know. Bamboo for one a grass, not a tree, and is one of the most self replenishing "wood" like materials available. A bamboo "tree" is capable of growing as much as 4' PER DAY. The plastic in the laptop is also all recycleable (not all plastic is) and the parts are labelled as such.
Sure it's not 100% eco friendly, but in that industry, its a huge leap forward. Probably not a viable route to go for mass adoption, but at least Asus is considering this.

Right, what he said. Also, in most urban places, bamboo is a scourge. My brother cut it down at his place a few times. He even poured gas on it.

Not a conservationist - just thought the notebook was nice looking and notebookreview would have good info on it.

Maybe your urban places. There is none here and couldn't be any. Wouldn't live.

Tiger, I meant those responding below the review.
Chad: it just hasn't gotten there yet.

Bamboo... doesn't like... snow.
-
I guess conservationists wouldn't use so much MDF and particle board.
-
No ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---, dude. I'd prefer to have stuff made out of hemp an soy beans an ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---. Forget plastics and wood....although, ultimately, having a little nanovat in your home would be ideal.
Chad: I thought of climate. That could be it....no, I don't think so: it snows in China and I think they got bamboo out the ass.

there are types of bamboo that are cold resistant, but frankly most people don't TRY to grow bamboo. It can literally take over and force out the native plants if it takes hold.
Bamboo is a very versatile material. It can be eaten, used as building material, made into fabric, etc. And it is very self replenishing.
Conservationists don't have a big problem with MDF and particle board. They can be made out of recycled wood fibers, and provide a use for the by-product of saw mills. Sure in their perfect world, there would be NO sawmills, but that's not realistic right now.
