your buddy comes over and gets a high score on your arcade and no matter what you do you can't beat it?
-
No, I'm used to it from way back when. I suck at video games. :'(
-
Or your 11 year old kid consistently whips you at one of the most popular arcade games ever!
-
Mine is that my GF beats me at like 75% of games... :banghead:

just edit the highscore.dat

sure, the evidence would be gone, but the pain will be there forever

My 11 y/o son has the current HS on Galaga 178,000. On my best day I was only able to achieve 72,000! :-[

lew - all I can suggest is... hidden exit button ;D

Out of my 3 machines (not emulation, original hardware), only one of them saves the high score when turned off, and it is not possible for anyone to beat my high score on that machine (plus I only know of one person, whom I haven't seen in about 20 years, that would have a chance at getting close or tying -- with lots of practice that is).
My friend did have the high score on my Ikari Warriors machine, which I wrote down, but that didn't bother me because that was always "his" game back in the 80's anyway. I just recently beat his score by a very slim margin, some 8 months later, but he'll no doubt rectify that soon enough.

Nah, a lot of the high scores on my machine are from friends that I don't see anymore since I moved to a different part of the country. The high scores are just reminders of good times.

Yeah....I had the exact same thing happen to me.....a buddy came over for some beers, one credit is all he needed to crack 200,000 in Galaga.
It has sat there taunting me ever since.
-
Usually I do this to my buddies. Like a few days ago, first time I tried the WII I beat him right away.
-
My cabinet isn't built yet but the saving grace for me is that fact that it will be MY machine and not theirs.
Heh high score all you want, it will still be my machine.
-
My Space Duel still has all of the high scores from some friend of the previous owner. I can't beat any of them and I've had the freaking machine for like 3 years now.
-
ah yes but.......
its YOUR machine
-
Not until I own the high scores. They're something to be earned, not taken by reset of the board.
I may own it, but someone else pwns it.
-
i'm not talking about resetting the scores at all.
Just the physical ownership of the game itself. The warm fuzzy feeling when you view its attraction screen blinking in the darkness and you know....... That is mine.

I'd think this would be neat. And, in general, another's high scores (made at your place) means you got to see places in the game you wouldn't, otherwise; good entertainment (hint, hint to someone special).

I'm going to tell you what I'm doing, something that might make every stupid game related thing you've ever done seem totally rational. My buddy was over, and he's a big fan of Defender. I was never good at Defender in the arcades, mainly because I didn't have the money to invest required to get good at such a difficult game. Even though I was willing to admit that I stink, he seems to think he's great even though I don't think he's ever broken 50,000. When I told him I'd get better and beat his scores, he told me it'd never happen, because its "in his genes". This statement was so ridiculous, I'm totally embarrassed to admit it actually pissed me off.
How bad? On my current machine, which has a passable, but nowhere near exact approximation of the Defender layout kludged together by the addition of a Reverse button and using player 1 and 2 controls, I have played Defender hundreds of times. He had the highest score on my machine for months. My irritation/mental illness about his comment is so bad that I now have the high score list at a point where his old high score that sat unbeaten for months won't be enough to make the bottom of the Top 10 list... even if he quadruples his old score.
Sounds fairly rational so far, right? Well, so that he doesn't have the option of using the non-exact control panel for an excuse, I'm also building a complete cabinet around the original Defender/Stargate layout, right down to using an original Stargate CPO.
If it all still sounds pretty reasonable, I also haven't told him ANY OF THIS. I've just told him I've been practicing at Defender, prepare for a re-match, which still elicits the "Its in the genes" reply. I'm fairly certain that if I don't humiliate him so badly that he'll never mention Defender again, the result will make what I've done up until now seem competley normal.

:laugh2: You sound a bit obsessed. But, that seems like as good as excuse as any to build a cab.
-
No kidding... so TOK, we'll mark you down as a "Yes", ok? ;D
-
so.... in the rematch of you get beeten will you build a Third defender cab?

Despite obliterating his old high score by 600% and making a dedicated cab to eliminate all excuses (and also concurrently playing Stargate in case he says he wants to play that instead) I still consider that he could beat me.
I'm pretty sure that losing will send me into the real version of Hyperspace. I'm either going to teleport from the Philly burbs to somewhere in Utah, or you'll just never hear from me again.

I've already received an e-mail asking me if my first post was serious... I don't want to post a Project Announcement thread until the machine is done, but here is a pic of the control panel test. My original post was dead serious.
I've since lowered the joystick to exact Defender height. Now that I'm really looking back at this, I'm pretty worried about my behavior. ;D
-
just remember, before you launch yourself into hyperspace or utah, crate up your defender cab and send it to OHIO, i can give you the exact address later.
:D

:laugh2: damn dude...
And here I was all afraid that I'd look all obsessive. Thanks for stealing my thunder.
Seriously though, thats one nice looking CP.
