Title: Integrated cupholders?
Post by: pezkore on April 13, 2003, 02:22:39 pm
The control panel that i am building for my golden tee is going to have a lot of open space on the top (the only things on it are 3 buttons and a trackball). So i was thinking that i would want to install at least one cupholder INTO the control panel rather than attached to the outside of it. That way, my beer would sit down into the control panel (more like a cop holder in a car). my question is, has anyone done this before and does it cause any problems?

I almost did the same thing on one of my control panels.  But for some reason I never got around to installing them before I sold it.

What I was going to use are the marine cup holders.  You can normally find them in black or white.  Here's a link to ones similiar to what I was going to purchase.

one concern of mine is that if i put the cupholders in and leave a beer there for too long, and the beer sweats, will that moisture getting into the inside of my CP cause problems (assuming it doesn't get on any wiring)

Use the ones Oscar shows above, and run a drain hose from it to a container in the bottom of your cabinet (4L milk jug would be good). Problem solved!

What every cabinet needs... a bilge!

Maybe just some thin sponge or cloth or something instead?  I don't know if a sweaty beverage will really get moist enough to need a drainage system (sewer?)

<lame>
maybe for a TMNT game though...

I can't say I've done it before but I always imagined a beer holder would be great on a cab. Then when I really thought it through I came up with a few things that you may need to look out for.

- Make sure your cab is stable (obviously) not so much a problem for stubbies and cans but if a mate wants to put his (tall) glass of bourben in there when you're not looking, it could be disasterous!

- Make sure the holder isn't in the range of any trackball or spinner runoff. A good flick off the trackball and mashing your hand into the top of the stubbie ain't no fun!

- Oh yeah, if you make them faily deep and you have big hands, you wont be able to get dropped stuff out of them easily if they're a fixed feature.

- Umm, make sure you seal it up real good or make them removable, because if anything gets spilled into it you'll want to wash it out, lest it'll reek for a while. Or the drainage approach.

- And one last point, having beer holders is just inviting your drunk friends to spill beer over your cab.

But hell, the whole purpose of having a cab is to get your mates over, get on the piss, and play some wicked games is it not? Sure it doesn't look too authentic, but if you're looking at building an awesome party machine then go for it!

I *really* like my Sirpoonga inspired flip down beverage holders

seend here (http://ubercade.randomdrivel.com/updatedalbum/images/ubercade_updates%20004_jpg.jpg) or other   pics on this page of cupholder n'stuff (http://ubercade.randomdrivel.com/updatedalbum/index.htm)

Just to speak to the value of beverage holders... my take on it... is that we'll be drinking anyways, and having a designated area for the brewskis helps prevent misplacing them ruffshod on the CP ...    blah...

Although the flipdowns doesn't help with the "embedded" approach original question.  *Shrug*

yeah those flip-downs are sweet.  I can only see positive consequences from installing any sort of beverage holder.  like rampy says - better in a cupholder than spilling precious precious beer on your CP  :P

I did this without too much trouble.

I drilled a hole just big enough for a beer bottle to go in through the control panel.

I then got PVC Pipe Caps (threaded interior), and the screw on ends, routed away about 1/4 inch of the wood from the bottom of the panel, then glued them onto the bottom of the panel.

This worked extremely well, and didn't allow any moisture to escape into my panel. It also allowed for easy release of anything spilled into it, and easy cleaning (get underneath panel w/ hand towel, unscrew end cap, capture water/beer/etc in towel, wipe inside of holder, screw cap back on)

OT:

sirp,

Are you running advmame on there and is there any benefit to the duelies SMP performance wise?  Or do you do things like compile mame "on" one processor while playing pac "on" the other =P

I realize, that system is just what you have/had laying around... but since you are actually using for MAME i thought i'd ask (what mythtv didn't work out?!)

I'll let you know, so far I just am using gxmame (mame32 for linux).  I heard advmame does do some smp.  I assume the emulation isn't done with smp, just some other stuff they caa throw into it's own thread.

Plus celeron 366 is too slow to compile!  I should overclock and see how fast a dual will compile sometime.

Alright, here's an idea;

How about integrating a keg refrigerator in the cab that has a valve controlled by the computer.  It will dispense beer when you reach certain scores on the games.  The Tap could come thru the top of the control panel.

I'm not sure if as the night goes on the scores would get better and more beer would flow or, if the scores would get worse dispensing less beer like a nagging wife that tells you to cool it because you have to drive home.

thats probably the dumbest idea I have every heard.

the tap should pour directly into your mouth LOL

how about a new game called... KSR  Keg Stand Reveloution!

you'd do keg stands, funnels and shotguns (the beer can kind - not the firearm, duh).

Without reading everything everyone else said, I wouldn't put a cup holder above the trackball.  If your friends play GTG like my friends, you'll scatter a drink all over your monitor and CP before the first game is over.  But you never know, maybe my friends and I have a drinkin problem.

It's decent quality... it's meant to be on a boat so it's reasonably rugged.  The "arms" expand to accept larger drinks.    I can fit a beer mug (you know the kind) in there without issue.

It hold up most drinks/bottles etc fine, but I wouldn't use them as a step to climb up or anything... (i.e. they aren't indestructable)

You could have a button on your CP that activated a wet/dry vac with its hose going to an opening in the front of the cab positioned at a strategic height.  You could use it for a urinal... or whatever occurs to you...
