Title: Save the Black Donnellys
Post by: crashwg on April 06, 2007, 08:33:53 am
I friggin can't believe NBC is so stupid as to cancel this show!  :banghead:

I doubt it will help but please, if you like the show sign this petition...

Why?  I tried to like it.  I liked it's premise.  The acting sucked and so did most of the story lines.  But that's just my opinion.

Didn't that show JUST START?   I've not watched because, frankly, I have way too much stuff to do to bother with television for the most part (though HEROES and HOUSE are two must watch shows for me)...and I catch parts of American Idol (damn wife!).

Are there two shows with the same name?  Because I'm not watching anything like you're describing...

Eh, I just didn't like the guy that played the main brother, tommy.  I did like Olivia Wilde though.

Check out Turistas for more Olivia goodness.

Oh, I watched every episode too.  I know if something's not good if I'm flipping through magazines during it.

Yah...I only know of it because it came on after "Heroes".  I watched a good 5 minutes of the first show and turned it off never to watch it again...seems a good 5 million of the 10 million folks who saw the first show followed suit.

Then clearly you're not spending enough time in front of the television.  You can't get to this level of knowledge without at least 8hrs/day of viewing.  ;)

Yeah, this is my low TV viewing period.  I watch so much during NFL season that after the Super Bowl I have trouble sitting down to play a console game nevermind watch a sitcom.

It's more of a drama I think...  ;)

If anything, save Studio 60 instead. That is what was replaced by the black donnellys. Studio 60 was WAY better. I am still waiting for them to at least finish out the season.

I watched about 3/4 of the first episode of the Black Donnellys, and that was all I could take.

That's what sucks about tv these days, you don't even want to start watching a show for fear of it getting cancelled.  Invasion and Threshold are two that I got into and got pulled out from underneath me.

If they did this 10 years ago Sienfeld would've been gone during the first season.

They don't let a show build and audience anymore.

Same with music, most of the bands now are disposable.

I watched the first episode and part of another episode and thought it was pretty good. I also don't care for the lead actor. He has some kind of overbite, or jaw problem - I don't know - but it really bugs me. NBC screwed the show by hyping it behind Heroes, then taking heroes off the air for almost two months. Brilliant marketing there jackasses. 2 hours of deal or no-deal? I like it, but not 2 hours of it. No wonder people have tuned out of NBC, and thus, Black Donnelys. Just another victim of the "instant gratification or no gratification" exectutive decision making in TV.

Usually a Star Trek actor in a TV show is enough to keep me watching a show, such as the Black Donnellys or Boston Legal. Even with Captain Janeway, I couldn't watch it. Boston Legal, on the other hand, with two Star Trek actors as regulars, just had, what I think, was their best episode last week and is renewed for a 4th season.

Boston Legal has star power, has the network backing it, a good timeslot, and most importantly is a damn good show. I don't watch it as a regular, but The Schat is hilarious in it.

save greg the bunny.

i havent watched the donnelies in a while.  networks are smart just look at what fox did to firefly and to cartoons are the weekdays.  they used to air reruns or beast wars.  whenever they would finish the series theyd restart from the beginning.  now nothing they are dead to me.

Cancelling shows in their prime is nothing new.  The Munsters was only on for two seasons before getting cancelled and Gilligan's Island was only on for three seasons.

Another recent show I really liked that only aired a couple episodes before getting cancelled (luckily the entire first season went to dvd) is the show Wonderfalls.  The critics loved it, but they changed the time and day the show was on 3 times...and they only aired 4 episodes.  No wonder its ratings were bad, no one knew when it was on.

The biggest difference is that back then,  a season was 30-35 episodes whereas we are lucky to get 20-25 episodes per season in todays market.

I was gonna say, there were like 100 different episodes of Gilligan's Island and multiple movies.  I used to watch that all the time as a kid.

Agreed, I think there were something like 70 episodes of Munsters in just those two seasons, but they were both cancelled way too early.  Every other show at that time also had 30-35 shows per season, yet most of the popular ones went for 5 or more seasons.  I'm just saying that cancelling good shows has been happening for a long time and isn't something new (although it does seem to happen more often in recent years then in the past)

I thought that the Black Donnellys really had a lot of potential.  I'm sad to see it go, but am not at all surprised since they wanted to build an audience from the Heroes audience.... but then only aired it after 2 new Heroes episodes.   :banghead:   Gee... I wonder why no one watched it then heh.

I unfortunately figured this was coming, but it still sucks.  Especially since it's being replaced with some idiotic reality show... THAT is what has destroyed television... reality shows.

Yes, but not in a prime-time network slot that dominated the ratings.

He didn't say "dominated", he said "started it all".

The Real World was huge for MTV way before Survivor as was Cops, relatively.

Started what exactly? He intention was to say Survivor started the trend of studio execs canning good shows that cost money to put in a cheaply produced reality show.

We interpreted his meaning differently.  I see nothing in his statement that specific.  It addresses "destroying television", which apparently means different things to each of us.

I think there are different levels of reality shows and they all can't be lumped together.  I have no use for Survivor, Real World, America's Next Top Model (my wife watches that, ugh...), etc...  But I do like most of the Discovery/TLC reality shows, Deadliest Catch, American Chopper, Mythbusters,  Dirty Jobs, and the like.

A few years ago, I loved watching Monster Garage, Monster House, and American Chopper. I know American Chopper is still on, but is Monster Garage still around? I have season 1 and 2 on dvd, but I think they lost their way once they got popular - IE - no budget limit and no longer making things look stock.

I caught a few episodes of Deadliest Catch during a weekend marathon one time and was surprised by how much I liked it. The episode when that green horn guy went overboard was intense.

I used to watch Monster Garage and Monter house as well, both good shows, but no longer on.

The new season of Deadliest Catch started last week, the first day out one of the boats went down, crazy stuff!  After watching this show, I don't fell bad paying as much as you do for crab legs.

Deadliest Catch is one of our favorite shows in my house.  I come from a long line of deep sea shellfishermen, mostly lobstermen but some crabbers as well.
