Title: 27" Tv with scratches... fixable?
Post by: steveh on March 29, 2007, 09:40:27 am
I recently obtained a 27" rca tv for free because the speakers are bad.  I am planning on using that as my display for the arcade machine.  Once i got it home i took a good look at it, and i noticed a few scratches on the glass.  Some are very fine, others are a little deeper.   If there any way to get the scratches out, and also not damage the video quality?  or do i have to live with it how it is.   No matter what the price was right.

Recently, this was asked about.  Try Brasso or something similar.

Do you even notice the scratches when the TV is on? If not, I wouldn't worry about it. In fact, they might not be noticeable under some smoked glass or plexi.

i have not gotten to play with it much yet.  Maybe i should just see what it looks like behind smoked glass.  that might solve my problem.

Hmm about the brasso.  i heard that could be difficult. is this true?

Difficult?  Wipe on, wipe off.  Little bit of action in-between.

brasso's good for plexi not sure bout glass. might be a bit abrasive. there is a type of 'sandpaper' specifically for glass ,i remember using it in woodshop , used for smoothing cut edges on glass ,but i think youll be better just seeing what smoked plexi does for you

For reference to readers in the future. You might want to read this thread (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=65014.0) about using Brasso. Scroll down to about post #15 to read what happened when someone used Brasso to remove scratches on their monitor and the commentary that follows.

In short, don't use Brasso on your screen.

I have a scratch on my monitor and was wondering if any one could advise what method to use? The fine sandpaper sounds ideal but can anyone offer more on this ?

from what i read on other posts in this forum.  theres really no way to fix it.  any thing you do will not only be worse, but potentially dangerous.  you are going to have to live with it... as will I.

Seeing as how you've already screwed it up, you may as well try the suggestions I always post in these scratched monitor threads that everyone never comments on favorably or negatively.

They make a "space age polymer" liquid for repairing scratches in eyeglasses.  It is a liquid that goes on like clear nail polish and is supposed to fill the scratches and harden clear.  In the commercial for it, they scratch up the lenses with sandpaper, then repair it to look good as new.

I think they may sell this stuff at Walgreens now.  I'm sure if you did a Google for eyeglasses and scratch repair you'll find something and might be able to read some reviews of people who have tried it.  Dunno if it would work for surface scratches on a picture tube, but it's worth a shot if your tube is looking bad.

Anyone tried this stuff and is it available in the U.K?
