Just a heads-up for those that have domains registered through registerfy,
GET OUT NOW!
They lost their ICANN certification lost cour battles, lost some of their staff, and are actually telling folks to move their domains to other registrars.
If you can get ahold of them by phone, they can help you out (took me 4-5 hours), otherwise they other priority is the faxes. Don't send an email or use the ticket system.
I finally got mine moved over to godaddy today, been trying for 3 weeks now.

Moving it to GoDaddy wasn't exactly smart either.....

Why is that?
they seem to be a pretty large well known place, do their own hosting, provide lots of services, and have decent tech support response (I called a couple times before xferring to see how long it took to get to a real person)

I have a bunch of domains registered with godaddy and have not had any problems with them. I'm curious as well why RayB says it "wasn't exactly smart either". Please elaborate.

I don't like GoDaddy's practice of keeping expired domains and then auctioning them off. They are supposed to release expired domains after 90 days, but somehow this company gets away with retaining and auctioning for profit.

I'm not knowledgeable enough to know how registrars are supposed to handle expired domains to know if this is true, but did you lose an expired domain to them?

No, and before you go and ask "what are you whining for then?" what has happened at least 2 or 3 times is I was watching some domains I wanted come to their expiry term, only to find them remain in GoDaddy's auction limbo.
Normally, I monitor the expirey of a domain I want, and check it continuously through the 30 to 90 days during which the original owner is permitted to re-register it. After that last final day, the domain is to be released to the public on a first-come first-serve basis. If I'm quick enough (or no one else is interested) I can register it through the registrar of my choice, at the normal price. This is how I got rayb.com . I nabbed it within hours of it being released.
But with GoDaddy domains. The original owner lets it expire... I wait out the expiry period and then... HMM?! 90 days are past, 120 days, 180 days... WTF? Turns out GoDaddy is keeps them and auctions to highest bidder.
This goes against ICANN rules, but suspect they get away with it by "contracting" transfer of ownership through their EULA when you register. (I have to verify that to be sure that's how they get around the rule).
Would you rather pay $10 to register a domain normally, or pay GoDaddy's inflated auction pirces (which for all you know are "fixed" for more desirable domains)??

Here is a sample of how smart GoDaddy is.....
with the recent change in daylight saving time, many internet companies were scrambling to ensure they had patches in place so the servers and everything updated on the correct day....GoDaddy, in all their brilliance, decide that since they are in Arizona and Arizona does not observe daylight saving time, they do not need to do a thing about the new change....even though everyone else that uses GoDaddy is not in Arizona. Needless to say, their servers went down.

In my searches on how godaddy was, I found TONS of posts about how bad their hosting was, usually about folder permissions and .htaccess files, but overall it seemed they were bad at hosting.
Plenty of great posts about their domain's though, with the exception of all the addons and crap they try to sell you when you are registering/transferring.
Not really a problem for me since I host elsewhere, but I can see why people aren't happy with them in the hosting area :)

Same here, just domains with them and hosting elsewhere. I transferred a handful of domains to godaddy without a problem on any of them. Hosting with them, I have no idea about.
