As my vertical cab nears completion I need to start thinking about the games that will run on it... I'm looking for suggestions on games other than the classics I guess... I'm working with a mappable Ultimarc 360 and 3 action buttons. So far I've got:
Pac-man, Ms. Pac-man, Jr. Pac-man, Pac-Man Plus, Pac & Pal, Super Pac-man
Galaga, Galaxian, Gaplus, Space Invaders
Dig Dug, Mr. Do!
Don Pachi, Do Don Pachi, 1941, 1942, 1943, 1944, 19XX, Xevious
Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr., Donkey Kong 3
Gun.Smoke, Contra, Commando, Ladybug, Mappy, Burgertime, Qix, Frogger, Q*bert, Zaxxon
I'm sure I'm missing a ton of great ones - this was off the top of my head...
List away!
-
Strikers 1945 III is a must.
Hmm, let me think it out and I'll come up with a list.
-
1941.
-
Amidar and Arkanoid.
-
Those as well as Phoenix, Tempest, Sinistar, Satan's Hollow, Nibbler, Gorf and Gyruss. There are just to many that I grew up with. I'm sure were still forgetting some.
-
Qix and the many many adult version of Qix
-
Joust 2, but I think it's a 2 joystick game. Then again, I think 1943 is as well.
Brian Z
-
Legendary Wings is pretty awesome.
-
Anteater is a really neat game. My wife sat for hours playing it when she came across it.
-
Qix and the many many adult version of Qix
Qix was cool. I found Volfied similar but better.
-
You could play Vanguard with a 1 button handicap. ;D
-
I've always like Son of Phoenix 8)
-
Scramble, time pilot (84), Tutankham, Dockman, disco #1.
This is by far the best moment in a MAME machine's life: finding out all the ROMs you've never heard of and playing them all
(ok, I'm kidding about dockman and disco #1)
You should use this:
http://www.waste.org/~winkles/ROMLister
It'll help you hunt down the ones that will work with your criteria of vertical, 3 buttons, 2/4/8way joystick.

Bombjack is one of my favorites.
-
JUNO FIRST!!!!!!
-
Heavy Barrel
-
There's a Viper Phase 1 at the Papa Gino's around the corner that I've played a couple times and I think it's pretty cool...
-
Definately depends on your tastes, but here's some of mine:
Esprade and Guwange... very stylish and good shooters.
Contra - mentioned, one of the best all time shooters. Is it a bug in MAME that it freezes up on max difficulty in-game?
Ajax - Helicopters and Tomcats? Sign me up!!!
APB - Don't know why I like this one, but since I gots me a spinner, I love it.
Tempest - nuff said.
-
tokio
-
You already mentioned DonPachi, DoDonPachi, etc. Thats my first favs.
Similarly, look up Vasara and Vasara 2, Raiden (1,2,etc), and GunNail.
City Connection is also pretty fun.
And Obviously, Galaga.
-
Sky Shark
Varth
Twin Eagle
Raiden
-
arkanoid & qix :D
-
If you had some nice LS-30s, I would say Time Soldiers.
That was such an awesome game....Anyone have a good control scheme for Time Soldiers without rotary sticks?
-
Somebody mentioned Heavy Barrel, that needs a rotary joy.
---------------------------
Blue Print
Burgertime
Commando
Donkey Kong Jr.
Kicker-great music & sound
..and I'll second the nomination on Anteater. It's what I always play on my cellphone when I'm in a waiting room or something.
-
Wow, how could I forget Mr. Do's Castle! Still love that silly game for some reason.
-
Giga wing
mars matrix
macross
-
Giga wing

Those aren't vertical games, they just scroll vertically.
-
Juno First
Star Force
Donkey Kong Jnr
Galaga
Frogger
Time Pilot
Phoenix
Gyruss
Exerion
-
Oh, Gyruss! I can't believe I left that off my list.
Best Vertical Game Ever.
-
Dig Dug
Mappy
Ms Pacman
Jungle Hunt (yeah I know..)
Phoenix
Time Pilot
Pengo
Mr Do
Mr Do's Castle
Arkinoid

Rock N Rope
Bump N Jump
Krazy Kong
To name a few....
-
Time Pilot, Tutankham, Donkey Kong, Gyruss (I'm really not sure why must of been the Music) :)
-
Rescue by Stern. Pretty unknown game that incorporates Robotron style dual stick play in a vertical layout. You control a helicopter and fight off enemy copters while trying to rescue parachuting soldiers. Corner deli had this game when I was a kid, and I got completely hooked on it. Being able to play it again in MAME blew me away.
-
Tron
SpyHunter
Moon Cresta
Centipede/Millipede
The End
Galaga/Galaxian
Pac Families
Space Invader Series
Q-bert
Congo Bongo
Satan's Hollow
Dkong Series
-
Finally, someone said Congo Bongo. Might help our requester if everyone wouldn't put in repeats of other's games already listed.
-
Juno First
Star Force
Donkey Kong Jnr
Galaga
Frogger
Time Pilot
Phoenix
Gyruss
Exerion
Everytime I see that name, I think horrible software protection/virus
-
Joust 2 is a 2 player game, not a 2 joystick game. Both players have 2 buttons though - flap and transform.
Tatsujin/Truxton and Arabian get my votes.
-
yeah, definitely juno first and exerion. also check out pooyan.
-
I'm thinking of building a dedicated vertical cab and did a little research. With about 1 hour of web search for "Mame", "vertical", "favorite" and/or "best", I compiled the following list. Items have been included if someone/anyone mentioned them as good or favorite. A few very modern (year 2000+) Japanese games have been omitted. I have confirmed through klov.com that all games are vertical. I'm sure some will not meet my tastes. Your mileage may vary...

Good work Coder. Did you use the deluxe search option at MAWS at all? Seems like an effective way to get the same information.

No, I used bruit force. I just checked this out (http://www.mameworld.net/maws/). Nice resource. It would definitely have saved me a bit of time, plus the lists are probably more accurate regarding the roms popularity. Unfortunately, when I use their advanced filter, and filter on "vertical", and "one or more votes", and has an average of "enough votes" (whatever that means), the list contains more than 1400 games. Oh, but wait...
Just played with it a bit more. (Glad I didn't hit the post button earlier). Using Deluxe Search, Results = "Hall of Fame", Orientation = "vertical", then Search Button, then clicking on "Votes" heading, gives list ordered by popularity of vertical games. Instead of posting the results here, I'll leave it up to the reader as a homework assignment. Thanks, leapinlew, for the info.
-
Idle hands... Attached is an Excel file containing the top 300 vertical games, as rated by voters at mameworld.net. The list contains many game duplicates due to romset variations. I'll start with this list and purge out the porn, dups, and games I don't like. I'm hoping to get the list down to around 100 games or so for if/when I build a dedicated vertical cab.
-
Thanks Coder (got your PM). This list will make a great starting point. I guess I need to play around with MAWS too. I am ready to finish everything (new computer is here, arcade is inside the house and 99% complete) but for some strange reason *coughnewbornbabypluscrazyhormonalwifecough* I just can't find the time.
-
One of my least favorite aspects is going through the game list and verifying everything works as needed. Once I've done it - I copy out the Mame and Mala folders as a backup.
-
I agree with most posted. Here's a couple that havent' been mentioned:
Kangaroo
Mr Do's Wild Ride
Game Paradise-Master of shooting (A parody of many games. A blocky enemy from Exerion is even one of the bosses).
Lock N Chase
Detana! Twin Bee
Dragon Blaze (Psykyo shooter)
Namco Classics 1 & 2 (arrange modes can be a nice change of pace)
-
... but for some strange reason *coughnewbornbabypluscrazyhormonalwifecough* I just can't find the time.
The absolute best time (if you can be quiet) is when they are both napping. Any other time, you are scum of the earth, selfish, and lazy. And by the way, it's your fault. No, really, treat them well, and it comes back in spades.
I'd be interested in seeing which games you settle on, either here or your project thread.
Good luck finding time.
-
The one I didn't see on anyone's list was Quantum.
-
JUNO FIRST!!!!!!
Seconded ... I had never heard of it until Ray did his restoration.
Fun. Freaking. Game.

Does that make it Juno Second? ;D
Anybody else ever think that Konami was trying to make a more invaders-esque version of Defender?
-
Nobody played Elevator Action? That's a great game!
-
A few from my lists..
Assault
Batsugun
Battle Bakraid
Battle Garegga
Dangar UFO Robo
Dangun Feveron (one to play w/ the lights off and sound pumped up)
Dogyuun
Guwange
Hotdog Storm
Ikari Warriors
Krull
Lethal Thunder (kinda neat gimmick here, the faster you shoot, the more powerful your shots are)
Mazinger Z (love those giant robots)
Mercs
Twin Cobra
Most of the other ones I'd play have already been listed...
Some of these are the more modern Japanese ones that
you omitted but they are well worth the play...
Good luck building your dedicated cab!
-

Elevator Action is a horizontal game.
-
Speed Coin
-
Lots of the above, but if you're looking for non-classics:
Try a game called Kid no Hore Hore Daisakusen (otherwise known as Booby Kid on the NES, it seems). I found myself completely addicted to that game some months ago.
Also, a game called Trick Trap (a.k.a. Labyrinth Runner). It's another game I find myself strangely attracted to. Don't know why really, I think it reminds me some old Konami games I used to play on my MSX. Maybe it appeals to you too.
edit: Oh, I forgot: Rally Bike / Dash Yarou! One of my first non-classic discoveries on MAME. Still one of my favorites.
On the classics front, I think there was a vertical version/hack of Rally-X. I don't know what's the status of its emulation. It seems it was on MAME some versions ago, but was removed.

"The Speed Rumbler"
this fantastic vertical game only recently became available in Mame 112 or thereabouts. It is a great game that I remember from my youth, even though I only actually saw it twice in the 80's, both times at the same skating rink on the far side of town.
You drive a car (top view) around shooting up bad guys' cars and rescuing good guys. Rescued guys give you bonus health, speed, power etc. Very addictive and fast paced game play.
Because the game has 384 vertical lines and is 'drawn well', it looks absolutely fantastic vertically. However, it looks pretty average on a horizontal arcade monitor as they are not normally capable of displaying more than about 280 vertical lines without interlacing. Therefore you end up using 640x480 and it looks like sh!t.
I am currently trying to put together a dedicated upright vertical cabinet with a 26" monitor (converting a Loewe SCART TV) , and I dream of being able to play "The Speed Rumbler" on it.

Elevator Action is a horizontal game.
I suffer from narrow vision I guess :-[
-
that one with a weird name... "Baluga Something" ... my 5 year old and I have a TON of fun playing it...
Of course Ms Pac Man rocks as well...
DoDon Patchi, 19(..),
Dig Dug
:)

Someone posted a link to RomLister, which I've found to be the best way to come up with a list of ROMs to match a given cabinet setup.
Note that RomLister has an option for 'cocktail' vs 'upright' - cocktail will choose all games with a dipswitch for 'cocktail' and upright will simply select all games (no restriction). So you will have cocktail games in your upright listing.
Using RomLister I was able to locate nearly 800 games for my cocktail table with 'imperfect' or better status, and the only thing I wish I had now was a way to filter out results that require a rotary joystick. (I use version 0.104 of advanceMame which means I have to fiddle with the search patterns as the XML has changed since then, but it works great)
That link again:

thanks for the plug!
>I wish I had now was a way to filter out results that require a rotary joystick.
Just add a "& !rotary" the end of the list of options in the -find window at the bottom of the application. (This is assuming you're using a merged xml file with all the controls.dat info added in)
The wizard is merely a guide to get you started in building search criteria. Since there was no way I could put in buttons and checkboxes for every single combination of things, it was there to show you how to build -find command that gets passed into the search engine.
