Title: Stencil / painting sideart advice
Post by: Minwah on March 23, 2007, 07:31:42 am
I'm hoping to move my cab soon and I have to do a bit of work on it (remove filler from screw heads and re-fill), so I thought I would do this and paint the sides at the same time...

Now I came up with a design ages ago, and was going to get it printed, but no-one I could find could print it big enough.  So I have been thinking about painting it on, with the help of some stencils etc.  I have come up with 2 or 3 different ways I could do this, none of which I am particularly thrilled to face doing!  Just looking for some advice or tips on what the best way might be...

Oh, and I am not bothered about the Atari logo as I can get this done in vinyl I believe.  It is the background that I am thinking about here.

prOK has a good Stencilling tutorial up at his site... however it's more to do with creating a stencil from original cab sideart.  Might still give you some ideas though.

Good luck

I would say that the design in your picture could be done easily with some careful layout and tape.  You could either project the image onto the cab and trace it with tape, or figure out the dimensions and lay it out with measurements.  I would do a base coat on the whole cabinet in the light blue outline color, then use some 1" or 1.5" masking tape and layout the starburst pattern and paint every-other space in the apropriate color.  Peel the tape and call it done.

It's a cool look whatever you do.  Good luck.

Thank you, good idea!  I wouldn't be able to project the image but I reckon a cheese wedge shape piece of card should be enough to get the tape in the right place.  I have a feeling this will be easier said than done in practice tho!  Looking forward to getting it finished...

You know..... If I could do it all again I would airbrush graphics onto my CP and sideart.

Just a thought.
