Title: Game Room Layouts: Back to Back?
Post by: RayB on March 22, 2007, 01:35:13 pm
It's nice to have rows of machines, side by side, but I was wondering if anyone has used "back to back" layouts, so that side-art is shown off?

I think you can lose a bit of floor space this way, but another advantage is it's easier to swivel the cab out for access to the back of it.

If anyone uses back to back layouts, post your pics please!

Yeah, I'm interested in seeing more game room pics. I'm moving soon and I'll have a dedicated game room. It would be a shame to hid side art, but I think I'm fine just cramming the most games possible into the space too.

Cramming them in side-to-side makes it look like a real arcade.

Of course, the real arcade I went to back in the day always had one or two "showpiece" games sitting right up front that weren't crammed in between all the others.  Maybe that's the right approach?  :dunno

The only real solution is to have enough room so that your games have some space between them.

Back to Back doesn't work because you end up seeing the back of the cab (the monitor yoke sticks out on most games) and the back of the cab, even if it's in good shape, typically looks like ass.  ;)

WHA?! ... Back to back means that the back of the machine is pushed up against the back of another machine (so you see side art, but not the back).

Most cabs have a flat back without the yoke pushing out.  Cabs with a monitor bubble like Gorf are more the exception than the rule.

A lot of it comes down to floorspace and how many games they had to fill it.
I remember arcades with the cabs lining the walls, others with cabs both lining the walls and a double rows down the middle (back to back, but excepting the end cabs you still couldn't see the artwork), and still others with games arranged in small clusters where the artwork was usually visible on one side.

My area is too small at the moment. Having them side by side saves space obviously and i think most of us try to fit as much as possible....we may try to have a nice layout at first but there's always that "new addition" that always changes the layout.
For me I try to keep the best ones visible some way. with Some the front is just as nice or even better than the side so those can get squeezed by two games. If i have one with bad art on one side, i can hide the one side and put the other as the end of the row.
Soon though, i will be able to layout a 20 x 30 room for just the playroom (no projects just entertainment). I wouldn't mind seeing how others have theirs laid out. It is going to fill up fast.
The guy with the Jack Daniels Barcade has a nice setup. Kind of what i'd like to do.

I'd take some pics, but at the moment it is just your typical row of cabs.

What games do you have with the tube reaching out of the back  ???

If I had the space I would prefer such an arrangement like in the picture (if the cabs have sides in good shape  ::) )

In the middle I would have some nice light effects for the ceiling or four long light tubes in differrent colors for a nice retro atmosphere :D
