ok, I'm about to bite the bullet and buy a 360, I have two young kids so I MUST be able to backup my store bought games.
what type of mod chip would be the best for a newly purchased 360? I've heard of things simply as re-flashing the bios, to swapping out the DVD drive to swapping out the DVD / HD / and flashing th ebios.
What's the straight poop? What's the best route to go?
thanks all!

Just flash the bios on teh dvd drive. Easiest way to go about it. As for making backups, look for a "Kreon" flashed drive on ebay.

Bios flashing and HDD swaps are for the ORIGINAL xbox, not the 360.
For the 360, if you want to boot backed up games, you need to flash your DVD drive's firmware. Then, like boykster said, get a Kreon drive for your PC to make backups of your games.
