LMAO!
I just saw a couple of stills from the new movie coming out, and it occurred to me. You wear a mask to hide your identity. As one of four human-size turtles in all the world, the mask accomplishes exactly the opposite. That's awesome. :)
-
Its so outsiders can tell them apart. That and because they are heroes and therefore need masks.
-
its because they're butt ugly and dont want to offend anyone (",)

Because ninja are stealth warriors. Masks/disguise are part of the ninja lore. They are not heroes.

That's fascinating. Thanks leapinlew. Stupid censors.

Originally they all wore the same color masks in the comic book. It was the first videogames and the cartoon series that introduced the different color masks.
Somewhere in my apartment I have a few copies of the comic book in which they first appeared in color, it was an issue of Grimjack and Eastman and Laird did the backup series (Munden's Bar) in that issue and the turtles were in it. They all had red masks. The reason I have multiple copies is because that issue is semi-valuable, and I pulled several of them from a quarter bin at a comic store many years ago.
-
You know, it's really too bad they had to bastardize the turtles....The original Eastman and Laird turtles kicked so much ass...Kinda like the Tick....although in a different sense. The Tick was a great book before Fox got ahold of it and turned it into a kiddy cartoon and a damned live action series...what the hell were they thinking?
Oh right....it was Fox....they weren't thinking.

Weren't the first ones in black and white indy style? I seem to remember them that way.
-
Yeah...the originals were B&W, but they also had some books in color back in the day before they turned into little dorky surfers.."WHOA DUDE, I totally cut that dudes head off man"

The best thing that came from the TMNT craze were the "Turtle Pies" from Hostess. I still crave those today. Hopefully with the release of the move they will make a return.
-
Yes! I remember those. Green frosted half moon pie things.

haha. I used to work at hostess and cleaned the pie fryer area. Thick green icing. The pies were just plain pudding pies.
Some kids will eat anything for a sticker. ::)

Maybe the biggest legacy here of the TMNT is the fact that without TMNT we wouldn't have the dumbass 60" four player monstrosities.

... or unfinished TMNT -> MAME conversions like the one in my garage. :-\

The mask colors were introduced for marketing reasons....
It's hard to get even an 8 year old to buy 4 action figures that look exactly alike. All 4 original tmnt action figures were the exact same figure except two had light skin, two had dark, they all had different mask/pad colors and different accessories.

I love those. I love all of the Konami 4 player games. As do most people around my age (my friends anyway). It is just fun to play a mindless beat 'em up with 3 of your friends. I love Gauntlet Legands/Dark Legacy for the same reason.
-
I think chad might be referring to those hideous byoac frankenpanels that pop up (or at least I hope as the konami 4 player cab is design perfection).
Remember kids, tmnt only had 1 stick and two buttons per player because that's all that'll fit (well three can fit, but that's xmen).

How the hell do you know so much about this crap? Maybe a better question is WHY the hell do you know so much about this crap? ??? ;D

Because Howard is president of the fan club...
-
Because I was born in 79, so I was Around 8 or 9 when turtle mania hit the country... do the math.

Heh, yeah, I consider Turtle knowledge common knowledge and I'm two years older than you, Howard, nyah, nyah. :woot

I never got into the TMNT because turtles carry salmonella. TMNT probably carry a mutant strain that is far worse.
-
Bah, I have turtles in my living room. I just missed the TMNT craze, it got my little brother though.
-
I think I still have my turtles in a collectors case in my closet. Too bad mutagen man leaked out his ooze and now they all smell bad.
