Can I just say to all those people who have been buying bucking magnets when they get discolouration on their monitor. They are probably a cheaper solution but I just received my deguassing wand today that I bought on ebay (thanks GameDude!) which has finally solved my monitor issues. It was worth every penny :)
If you have a discoloration problem on your monitor, check ebay for cheap deguassing wands, it is definately worth the hastle!

I was planning on buying one of these, I know there are some things you have to be careful of to use them but any tips for someone who has never used one??
I've read instructionals but I always find a real world example helps.
Strangely enough the cheapest place I have found to buy one is Mexico (on ebay and including delivery its still cheaper) unless someone knows a good place in the uk to buy one?
I could spend a one off £30 to get a pro to come and do it but it would be nice to own my own one in case it has to be done again.

Teebor your avatar is really freaking me out.

Visit the PureBasic site, they have a fetish for The Hoff :-)

That's all lost on me.

And if you close your eyes, and wish really hard, Headkaze will come over and deguass your monitor with his new wand too!

I checked EBAY and there is one vendor selling wands for $3.99....CAN'T BE RIGHT?!? Likely those would simply shock the ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- out of you rather than actually work!?! Especially since the next closes price is around 10x that!
I also looked up GAMEDUDE on ebay and the only guy with that nick is no longer a member?!?
EDIT: Nevermind...i was looking at ebay US...i assume ebay EU has different members or is Headkaze even in the EU?

The deguassing wands work great, I got mine from happ but they run about $30.00...if someone needs to borrow mine, contact me we can prob work something out

Actually in the USA they are called Degaussing Coils not wands because they are a circle.
-
your right my mistake, mine is a coil, you start close to the monitor & work your way out in a circular motion til about 6 ft out
dm
-
Actually you start 8 feet away from the monitor with the coil perpendicular to the monitor. As you slowly approach the monitor you slowly move the coil from perpendicular to parallel to the face of the monitor. Move the coil in a circular manner around the face of the tube then wave the coil around the sides of the cabinet or tube. Now you start slowly backing away from the monitor and returning the coil from a parallel orientation back to a perpendicular orientation. once you're back to around 8 feet away now you switch off the coil.
Keep in mind you must do this all within a two minute timespan or you'll burn up the coil. It is only designed for intermittent duty cycles: two minutes (Maximum) on time followed by 30 minutes off time.
-
You can use other heavy magnets for this... a strong corded drill will sometimes do the job on monitors that aren't too messed up.
-
I spoke too soon :( the discolouration has come back. The speakers must be too close to the screen. I'm going to try some aluminium foil. I can't find bucking magnets local to here. Anyone know where I can get them?

I was using my coil just a few minutes ago and my pacemaker exploded. What do I do n

At least his fever has dropped now.

Quick! Take the wand, and ram it up into your....
Ermmm... Never mind....

That comment looks directed at More Cowbell as a suggestion of how to restart his pacemaker.

Haha - yes that was for Cowbell. Me and Headkaze are friends now...
Man - can you imagine if I was the first to post a reply with that one! Headkaze would kill me!!!

may be worth buying shielded speakers!? :)

I took apart an old hard drive....I attached one magnet on the edge of one side of a 1" wood boring bit, the other on the other edge/other side of the wood boring bit. Attach to a cordless drill...fire it up...walk directly at the monitor...once there, move around a bit then walk back away from the monitor. It works OK...it's solved all my degaussing issues....but sometimes it takes a couple runs...and you have to pull the glass off the front of the cabinet to get as close to the monitor as possible (without BORING in to it of course)...

Good info Ken!
Could you clairify this:
Actually you start 8 feet away from the monitor with the coil perpendicular to the monitor. As you slowly approach the monitor you slowly move the coil from perpendicular to parallel to the face of the monitor.
Does the rotation from perpendicular (I'll call 0 degrees) to parallel (90 degrees) occur proportionally from 8 feet to 0 feet? IOW do you start turning as soon as you start approaching the monitor so that when you are 6 feet from it you should be 23 degrees turned, 4 feet 45 degrees turned, 2 feet 67 degrees, and then 1 inch 90 degrees?
Or do you start (at 0 degrees) moving closer until you are (say) 4 feet still at 0 degrees, then from 4 feet to 2 feet you do the rotation from 0 to 90 degrees, and then the approach from 2 feet to 0 feet is all at 90 degrees (parallel)?
I'm guessing the first, but would appreciate any insight...

I bought a $3.99 wand/coil off ebay.
Worked a treat. It turned both my monitors Red.
Then after a lot of trial and error, holding it 90 degrees/0degrees, on off, moving it in circles, ovals , squares, triangles, I got both my monitors the right colour.
I would love to be shown how to use it properly. I suggest buying a $5 off ebay and then spending the $30 to get a tech to do it in front of you and teach you.
Just take a look at the ebay one and make sure you get the 110V or 240V one that is right for your country. I was lucky my cab has a spare 110V output so I plug it into there as we work in 240V here. I believe if you put the wrong voltage through an electromagnetic coil it changes the magnetic flux profoundly.

The first.
