Title: Decasing A Sony Trinitron Tv
Post by: SithMaster on March 12, 2007, 12:35:03 am
Ive read up a little on the subject and im going to look up some more before i start doing anything more involved than opening the case but i have a few questions.  These are assume the tv has not been discharged.

First When i opened the case i noticed that inaddition to the deguassing cable being wrapped around the back of the screen there were other cables attached to a plastic holder on both sides of the screen.  I followed the wires and i believe they are for the speakers.  Is it safe to remove the speakers by simply cutting the wires?

Second ive read i should never touch the anode but does this refer to the part attached to the tv or is any part of the cord off limits.

Third if i use a power drill near the tv would the built in degaussing coil correct the picture or do i need magnets?

Fourth ive read that i should (unless i like explosions) add an isolation transformer and i am confused as to when i would use one.  if i am going to leave the tv still cased but use the metal mounting tabs do i need one or is it only if i remove the entire case?

Ive been thinking of how to mount the tv since it is going into a galaxian cab and ive read level42's and darthnuno's projects (they make it look easy) and when i look at mine i dont want to touch or try to remove the chasis to remount on a piece of wood.  It scares me.  So i was thinking of just cutting the bezel off to get to the tv mounting tabs and attaching it from there.  This would let me keep the tv cased but allow it to still hang from the oak boards im using.  The only problem i see is that i would need to manuver around the screen or something.  That and its the only way the case is held to the screen.  Im still working on a plan though i would like to hear some ideas as to mounting and handling.  Since im on spring break im trying to have it mounted before the week is over.

Thanks in advance for any help and keep in mind any way i can avoid having to completely remove the case is preferable.

Tvs have isolated powersupply, they have done ever since they added things like AV inputs and headphone sockets since they are exposed. Prior to that they were like older arcade monitors with the chassis referenced to the AC input, and just isolated the antenna input thru a capacitor or a small transformer. the transformer WONT make is safer to handle since you will still have a ground connected to the tv via the signal cables, so there will still be voltage in their referenced to ground.

No idea about the drill, they have some pretty mean magnets in them. Perhaps use an extension bit if you can?

The cord to the annode should be ok, because it is insulated, but I still don't trust it with all the caked on dust that they get.

If you are worried about handling it, go to a service technician and ask them to discharge it. They would like some liquid gold in return for this, pick up another tray of it for yourself when your completed the cab as motivation.

TV sets are cake to work with when compared to computer monitors and arcade monitors. Discharge your set, remove the speaker wiring, hang your tube, mount the PCB somewhere and then hook the PCB back up to it. It is very easy to do. The hardest part is always cutting the hole in the plywood to hang the tube from.

This is really easy to do, just read up on how to discharge (which is simple), and then go to town.

Touching the anode means don't stick your finger under the suction cup or stick your finger in the hole that is under there. A powered down TV set isn't going to bite you if you discharge it. Most of the time it won't bite you even if you don't discharge it (usually a set doesn't hold a charge all that long after power down).

The red wire or anode cap won't bite you even while the set is on, but there also are not any reasons to touch those parts while the set is on, and seldom are there reasons to touch them while they are off. basically remember that red wire going up to the suction cup is a high voltage wire. Treat it with respect.

hey paige congrats 8000

well i noticed that the speakers are connected to the chasis by two connectors which i would like to just disconnect and leave them like that.  they dont work so no point to them.

i also noticed two gray wires coming off the neck pcb and they connected to a gray (looked like nylon) cable that wrapped around the tube and hooked onto the top of the case.  im thinking this is a ground and is important and if so then i need to find a way to connect this to the wood (is this safe or should i try to find something plastic to connect to)?

the chasis worries me since to get to it have to remove the tube.

i havent had the tv on in over a 2 years but i have some pliers with insulated handles in going to use.  the main thing is that gray wire pair coming off the neck.

ill read up some more (def on discharging) thanks.

http://www.instantarcade.com/discharge.php found this on discharging but what do i connect the clip to if it doesnt have the metal frame?

...anything grounded will do.

Any ideas what the gray wires could be?  Ill try and get a pic of what i mean.  but to make things easy i might just try and lift the tube and cut away some of the case.  this way the neck stays safe and so do i.
