Title: Need computer help
Post by: shardian on March 07, 2007, 07:44:51 pm
I have a Gateway MX6454 laptop and the dvd+-R RW drive is a Philips sdvd8820.
This dvd burner has one problem, the *^%^&*% thing won't let me burn a %$&%&^*% dvd!!!
I can burn cd's just fine, but any time I go to add a file to a dvd-r, I get an error. After looking up this drive online, it seems it is a piece of ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- and everyone has problems with it, except for the fact they can actually get to the burning process.
The discs I tried today are the premium Taiyo Yuden's . I tried to do a burn a week or so ago with another brand and got the same error, but didn't think anything of it at the time.

Hopefully someone can help me out, as I don't really want to send my lappy off. They tend to wipe hard drives for no reason in my experience.

I almost always use built in burning software in windows xp for data cd's. I also tried the software that cam with the pc, but it will not even get to the point where I can add files to the dvd.

Did you make sure you were on the latest firmware for your burner?  I recently had a problem with some sony discs only showing up burnable at 2x on my desktop dvd burner until I updated the firmware.  Then everything went smoothly.

I found a firmware upgrade over a Dell's website. It didn't help. It is like the drive isn't even seeing a dvd-r disc.

It appears Dell's solution to this drive is to send out a replacement NEC drive to people who ---smurfette--- enough. COuldn't find any cases for the Gateway notebooks and this drive.

Windows XP has no built-in burning software for DVDs.  Windows explorer can ONLY burn to CDs, regardless of the quality of your drive.  In order to burn to DVDs you have to use Nero or Roxio or Sonic or some other 3rd party disc mastering app.

There is a dvd burning software on the pc, but it won't open when I go to the burn dvd part of it.
I'll get Nero and see if I have better luck.

Maybe take a look through these for free software - I have no idea if they can do the job or even reasonable software, but it may help
