So who is going to see it on friday. I can't ---smurfing--- wait. Looks like it is going to be phenominal. I mean if your into the constant action/blood/war/anger thing.
-
I thought you were going to say you bowled a perfect game.
-
I saw the lead guy on Leno the other night, he looked out of shape it seemed. Did they all wear body suits in the movie, cgi or what?
-
I thought the previews made it look pretty dumb, but the prescreenings have produced literally unanimous applause for it. Now I'm kind of excited.
-
Gladiator movies... all hot and thweaty.
-
I heard on an interview that a lot of the cast went through a pretty grueling workout regiment, dunno about any cgi done. I am and always have been a sucker for non stop action movies, I get such an adrenalin rush watching movies like braveheart and Conan the Barbarian...
Not to mention a bunch of grown men in loincloths, but that is neither here nor there :o
-
This is the first movie in a long time that I'm really looking forward to seeing it.
Heres a very cool clip of one of the battle scenes: http://www.mtv.com/overdrive/?name=movies&id=1553704&vid=136403
Heres another one thats pretty cool: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/300/trailers_player.php?IGNMediaID=1912037&playerType=playlist
I normally don't watch anything but the trailers to movies I want to see because I don't want to spoil the movie. But since this movie doesn't have much of a plot and is just non-stop action, I decided to go ahead and check out a few clips.
-
The bodies aren't CGI'd. I remember seeing some making-of video of the filming process (virtually the entire move is filmed in front of a green screen. It looks like it would be an incredibly boring movie to make as an actor). Anyway, everyone really is musclebound.
-
Well then that guy really let himself go. Man, if I ever got that cut I would live in the gym to keep it. ;D
-
I'm thinking of skipping Friday to see it (that not being the only reason, of course). I really can't wait to see this movie. I seriously get goosebumps every time I see the trailer.
-
That reminds me of Brad Pitt after making Troy. He's a chain smoker and he stopped smoking cold-turkey for an entire year to get in shape for that role. If you saw Troy you know that he got huge. He was ripped. He said in interviews that he had never been in better shape in his entire life. He also couldn't wait to finish filming so he could start smoking again.
Imagine being a life-long chain smoker and managing not only to quit for an entire year, but get in the best shape of your entire life, and actually be excited to let it all go again. Most people that age can't stop smoking and wish they had never started. He must REALLY like smoking.
-

Not everyone likes to be bulked up. Edward Norton now looks small compared to American History X. I believe he said in interviews and what not that he didn't like spending tons of time in the gym etc. He is still in good shape, just not huge like he appeared in that movie.
-
Well then that guy really let himself go. Man, if I ever got that cut I would live in the gym to keep it. ;D
Of course it occurs to me that it works the other way, too. You could always just start living in the gym now and you would get it. ;)

I really want to see this movie, but I have heard reports that there is lots of "dudeity". I'm OK with nudity, but dudeity.. I'm not so sure. I did hear that there is tons of combat with heavy metal playing in the background. I guess I'll just close my eyes during the "dudeity".
-
Saw it listed for the IMAX theaters... seems like the place to see it.

Whatever you do, don't see Borat then. :o
-
Borat, ugh. I turned it off when he started describing them breaking the evil Jew egg before it could hatch. It was unwatchable.

I watched it thru unfortunately...well at least it was only 75 minutes long. It had a few funny scenes but it was nowhere near as funny as everyone makes it out to be. Reminds me of another crappy- though mildy funny movie: Napoleon Dynamite.
Anyways, back to on-topic.
300 looks like an awesome action flick, but I'll wait until video.

No doubt. I have seen several premieres at IMAXs and it is just such a better movie experience. I just hate the puffed up usher with a power kick that forces you to the far right hand side because you were at the front of the line (which I had been waiting a long time to be there). I explained ...Um...Dick, I have been waiting 2 hours here... not to be at the far right, but in the dagum middle. Well you gotta move along sir and sit over there... Um no you need to get your manager and I will speak to him about it. No sir you have to move. Um ... no go get a manager, so I can explain why I will need my money back. This is not friggin Disneyland. I paid for these seats and this is where I am sitting. But sir....Get the manager...But....Get the manager. Of course, at that point his chest unpuffed and he chose not to get the manager or fight us any longer.
Anyway the point is that IMAX's rule. The sound for one is worth the price of admission to start with. Then that much screen. You really feel like you are there. I saw all 3 LOTRs on IMAX. It was friggin great. Pearl Harbor was great in IMAX (though they did miss the point. (Thanks Matt and Trey))
I will be looking for 300 in IMAX. Might make it a "research project" for work. Studying the techniques used in the CG.
-
I just wish there were one closer. They're all in pain in the ass places to get to in MA and RI.
Of course, most places in MA and RI are a pain in the ass to get to.

Things are starting to look down. No more 100% for 300. The negative reviews parallel EXACTLY my gut feeling about this movie. At the beginning of the week I thought I was going to be broven wrong, and I was rather happy about that. Now I'm thinking the movie is exactly what it looks like: Seriously short on plot, with the majority of the dialog being replaced by non-stop Braveheart-style battle speaches that haven't been fresh since Braveheart. It has just always seemed like the previews showed angry naked musclemen yelling a lot, which doesn't sound that appealing when stretched out over an hour and a half or two hours.
Here's to hoping that it really does end up proving me wrong.

I don't think its going to prove you wrong. Its going to be a non stop action movie and is often compared to a video game. Basically they kill a bunch of regular bad guys, then fight a boss battle, then repeat. Its not supposed to have a deep plot, its just supposed to be one hell of a ride. If that doesn't sound appealing to you, then I wouldn't recommend you go see it, but I really like a shallow action movie every once in a while.
-
300 looks interesting...
...and I didn't know that Rob Zombie was re-doing Halloween...cool.
-
I thought you were going to say you bowled a perfect game.
i thought it was going to be the number of posts hes done...
i see there is at least one aussie actor in it, so i feel compelled to see despite reviews here ;D
-
FYI, there is an R-rated trailer out on the innernets for 300 now. I don't have to go see it now that I saw plenty of blood, guts, dismembered body parts and boobies! ;D
BTW, since when do movies put out R rated previews??
-
It's not new... they are only played before R rated movies, though, obviously.
-
Of course, most places in MA and RI are a pain in the ass to get to.
Chad - could you expand upon this statement? [sorry to thread-jack]
Just curious because the NE has been near the top of our vacation list for a while.
-
Massive traffic, randomly placed roads/highways, perpetual construction that accomplishes little of substance.
-
Ok, we should be alright then. Survived driving in Dublin, Ireland last summer... can't be worse than that. ;)
[to any Irish folks - we loved the country, but driving in that particular city was hell - even the locals agreed]
-
Saw 300 last night and it was pretty awesome. I will definitely be going back for another showing.
-
Yeah, it was kickass.
-
I saw it last night, too. Good movie.
-
I saw the movie last night too and it was awesome. It was exactly what I expected, and what I was hoping for.
Like I said to people yesterday, no.. it won't win a best picture Oscar, but damn if it didn't keep me entertained for 2 hours. I'll probably see it again in theaters.
-
Saw it sunday, it rocked.
For those of you afraid of the duditude there was at least 3 topless women scenes which automatically bumps the rating in my book.

I just noticed an article from last week about people in Iran being pissed off about this movie:
The Iranian press has seized on the outrage, with one newspaper, Ayandeh-No, proclaiming: "Hollywood declares war on Iranians."
Don't mean to turn this into some P&R discussion... just thought this was ridiculous. I'm looking forward to seeing the movie.
-
Saw it last night. There is one (dudity) scene that I remember in the movie. Wild Hogs has more dudity in it.
The movie is one fo the best I have seen in a long time. I hope they release a directors cut with additional footage of them fighting the Persians.
-
THIS IS SPARTA!!
i saw it last night. not too bad. a young lad at work saw it too and thinks its the best movie hes ever seen! today we were constantly yelling 'this is sparta' at each other. his enthusiasm has rubbed off as i might just go and see it again...
-
I just got in from seeing.
---smurfing--- AWESOME.
TONIGHT WE DINE IN HELL!!

you do realise though that a number of those 'women' were packing a bit more than you would probably like? ;)
read an interview with australian actor david wenham. he said that it didnt occur to him at the time of signing that working in toronto in winter and wearing leather underwear might not be a whole heap of fun ;D . he also said frank miller was great to work with and that frank was inspired by a movie called 300 spartans (i think it was the first movie frank ever saw), which david thought was pretty dismal but hes glad that frank saw something in it...
-
I still can't seem to get through this whole movie.

BRUSH YOUR TEETH!!!! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gNqiSkd1M6k&mode=related&search=)
-
I still can't seem to get through this whole movie.
What does that mean? You've paid to see it, then left the theatre half way? And then did it AGAIN??
-
Wow, I thought this movie looked neat and was exciting for about half of the battle scenes. The plot and dialogue is just plain thick, though. Oh, and whatever you say about dudeity, I was more disgusted by the amount of makeup the "heroes" in this movie wear. :o
Oh, and the ending was total crap. Why did there have to be some stupid treachery subtheme?
I hope The Watchmen turns out better.
-

Oh, young nieve one. He is watching it from the comfort of his living room. The reason you can't get thru it Chad is because you are watching a visual and audial experience as a low-quality screener on a 19" tv.
-
Quality and such aren't all that important to me when I don't care much about the movie to begin with. It's much better quality than that, upscaled to 720p, regular stereo. It's more about the content of this movie that just doesn't do it for me. It's not gripping me.
-
A bigger screen doesn't make a half-decent movie great.
-
It may make it a better experience, though, which does seem to be part of this movie. Only if you actually like the movie, though, which didn't happen here. It was playing at the IMAX near my house and I was considering seeing it there but didn't want to drop the heavy admission fee without being at least somewhat certain I'd like it.
-

Ahhhhh..... Chad wants there to be a little more "gripping" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pi2t58CRmbU&mode=related&search=) in the movie! ;)

Could have been but I heard they ended up cutting out the "drop the soap" scene.

Maybe Paul Ruben is free for an evening...

After three days of battle, a local resident named Ephialtes betrayed the Greeks by revealing a mountain path that led behind the Greek lines.

I thought he was referring to the treachery back in Sparta. Historically everything was fine back home because the second king (conveniently forgotten in the movie) was still in charge.

I didn't like any of the treachery aspects, too black and white for me, but I didn't know, either, that it was true that some sniveling deformed guy was the only thing stopping the 300 from defeating the Persian army entirely. :o
That said, I really only enjoyed the first couple of battles. Most of the stuff with the bigger monsters and the campy Persian Mini-bosses was at least good for a laugh. It just seemed that the premise of the movie revolved around a military force that was truly indestructible because of their quality and devotion to being soldiers. Unfortunately, I think it would have made a better movie to play down the treachery angle and show that they would have been overwhelmed.
The spear at the end seemed anticlimactic to me.
-
WTF, that lame Paolo guy from Lost plays Xerxes??? No wonder Iranians are pissed at this movie.
-

That part is pretty close to accurate, if you allow for the fact that they were in a geographic position where a small force of determined soldiers could hold up any size force for at least a little while. They were such great soldiers because that's all they did. Slaves from other Greek tribes did all the work so the Spartans could be so protective of Greek freedom.
The movie leaves a lot of history out to make them into bigger badasses, but they were the best in the world at the time.

Well, I don't deny any of that. I couldn't help being a critic as I was watching and noting that, no matter how great they were, they were bound to be overwhelmed and it sort of undermined their sacrifice and sense of duty to show them as superheroes who couldn't be stopped except by some lamely presented treachery, historically accurate or not. I mean if they are near indestructible, then there is no story, since they do not need to show bravery or anything. It's like what Superman would be without Kryptonite ... or just an excercise in CGI and choreography. Anyway, I feel like I'm crapping a bit on this thread, since all you guys already expressed your undying devotion to movies without plot and good dialogue. ;D

I understand where you're coming from and I agreed it was pretty lame the way they presented it. When they told the guy he couldn't fight because he couldn't cover the man on his left with his shield, I accepted that. Then they spent all of 30 seconds in formation before they went solo. That's where they lost me.
The original 300 Spartans from the 60's was a much better movie in my opinion. Not as flashy or artistic, but a great story. And if you want to read an excellent book pick up a copy of The Gates of Fire by Stephen Pressfield. It'll give you a feel for what it would really be like to be a Spartan and march to what you know will be a futile last stand.

even in the movie they knew they would not be returning. the premise is to buy time for a larger force. i enjoyed it, but i always get distracted by artistic licence. like those silly arrow heads and all the persians looked like what todays emos will look like when they grow up, what with their faces full of stupidly placed piercings. having said that, since most of the movie is the story as told by the survivor to his troops, then artistic licence makes sense. like those huge elephants for instance, and that goat smoking a hookah :scared
