Title: New game room
Post by: wraunch on March 05, 2007, 02:04:23 pm
I have some questions and I need some advice.
I am currently creating a game room in my house.  In the room I will have a 7.1 surround sound system, a 42" HDTV 2 couches and a coffee table in the front part.  I will have lightbox posters going around the top of the room.  I have a Konami Run n' Gun machine in the back corner with a dartboard beside it.  I am looking for a good deal on a foosball table of fairly good quality below $500 and possibly another game machine.  I love video games but I dont have enough space for all the machines I want so I was wondering what can I do to have one cabinent play a ton of different games would that just be a MAME or what?

You can get a pc, a Jpac, and an arcadeVGA and turn your Run& Gun into a MAME machine without modifying anything on the cabinet. That would be your easiest rout.

No doubt.
You can flounder on this forum and website for months, or you can get the book and learn about this hobby in a structured manner in a few days. Your choice.

Get an arcade in a box and use it with the TV, Sound Sys, Couch and Coffee Table that you already have.  Or buy the kit and put together your own.  Or if you have lots of time build your own in whatever style you like and fill it with all the emulators you can find.  Your choice is unlimited.

every time Chad makes one of these posts, I get the image of Lee Trevino shaking his head in shame from Happy Gilmore. If only I could find a gif file of that...

Do it, but you have to superimpose that box on him.

So I should get a good cabinet with a monitor and turn it into a MAME?  What should I look for in a cabinet and monitor?  Where should I look to buy one?  Also any recommendations on the foosball table?  <$500???

Unless you are a fooseball master, just get a cheapo fooseball table. Your drunken friends will have just as much fun on a cheap table as they would a good table. I got the Star Wars fooseball table Walmart had 2 years ago on clearance for $20. It is played any time people come over and they love it.

Heh, it's tough to choose what to do with your space. I'd get a generic cab from a local arcade distributor and MAME that. If you have a dedicated cab in good shape, preserve it.

My dedicated cab isnt in great shape.  The monitor is good and it doesnt give me much trouble.  I have looked at some tornado and bendini tables but I dont know where to find the best deal for my $$.  So my first step for the MAME is the cab?  How much for a good 27" monitor for it?

I dont know about low fooseball table prices, but go with a wood table if you can find one.  You'll just end up breaking or degrading the plastic one fairly quickly.  My parents have owned a wood/metal fooseball table for about 9 years and its still as good as the day we bought it.  Has built in cup hodlers too.

Yeah that's my thinking.  I had a cheap plastic one growing up.

Foosball: for a fun time, it's gotta be a tornado (or its like).

Foosball never gets old, but people playing it while you're trying to watch TV, a movie, or playing a console game in the same room does.

In our office break room we  have a foosball table a Street Fighter II cab, a 42" HDTV, and a couple of consoles. It seems that the console guys get a bit irritated with the foosball playing. But hey, everybody has to have a good time, right?

So its your job to have fun?  All the good jobs are taken.

That and when i read your last sentence again i thought of something humorous. :laugh2:

So if I could get a new Tornado for $395 that would be a good deal I guess?  Any retailers you guys know of where I can get a Tornado?

Your best bet to find a high-end fooseball table is to find a "billiard & games" store in your area. You won't be getting professional equipment from Wal-mart or Sears.

I'll ask again though - are you a really, really good fooseball player? I don't care what other people say on here, owning a high-end table will not make you instantly into a master player, just like wearing Jordans will not make you an NBA player.
You can get a fairly good table for around $200 from local retailers.

I guess money isn't an object for some people... :dunno

I always thought Sears had some pretty good quality foosball tables.  We got one of these for a sister-in-law for xmas and it seems pretty solid to me.  Of course I am by no means a foosball connoisseur.

The keystone is usually the main model Sears keeps in stock- at least they used to. Very sturdy table, and the clearance price is nice. I found it to be a little stiff though when it came to playability.

The one I have is identical to the cheap sportcraft, except decked out in full Star Wars garb. Nowhere near as robust as the nicer tables, but still holds up very well to 4 player use and abuse.

I don't know about prices, but the keystone one seems a good deal.  The only thing with that is since it's an end pocket goal, you don't get 'hot balls'. (This is where the shot is so intense it goes through the ramps underneath and pops out the other goal.  We'd play that double score...of course, then another hot ball doubles that.  Can get very interesting.)

On the craiglist one, to make it like a tornado, you'd have to remove the corner slopes and put in end goalies on each side.  Still, very worth it, either way.

I found a Garlando G-1000 for $350 locally in the classifieds.  I am going to check it out tonight.  Anyone know about Garlando tables???

Shardian- I am not a serious player, I enjoy playing and I am trying to learn to play "properly".  I just want to make sure that whatever I get is going to hold up for quite a few yrs.  I saw this table online and I wonder if it is good enough to hold up.

I might still go look at that Garlando table after work also.

Stay away from those if you really want one to hold up for several years.

Just a note to think about.... if you can physically pick it up by yourself...... DON'T buy it!!
If it comes in a small cardboard box and you have to assemble it...... DON'T buy it!!

Take that $200.00 and put it towards a Tornado or equivelant.

Ok, thanks Kevin.  I looked at some this weekend and the place I went to had a Brunswick Kicker table that seemed to be nice.  It had ball bearings in the holes where the rods go.  I am going to look at that Garlando today, that seems really nice also.
