Finished in September 06 finally getting a chance to post it.
Cabinet is finished in 2 pack black high gloss poly urethane paint
Amplifier is a Pioneer 150 watt using Accusound speakers
Using remote extender so that amp remote control can penetrate cabinet.
Software is VMJ i know a lot of people have had problems but it seems very stable and i like the layout.
The sound is unbelievably good .
What do you all think
Cheers

Hey that looks pretty good.
It pretty much is the same design I was looking to build.
What size speakers are you running?
Did you use MDF for the speaker mounts?
Hows the Bass response? The only thing so far keeping me from building mine is I want a nice bass response.
Remote extender. Is that basically a sender that is stuck on the face of your AMP and a small receiver near the outside to receive?
150 watts total for your AMP?
-
Glad you like it the speaker specs are below , yes the speaker boxes are made from MDF
The pioneer amp is 120 watts per channel believe me that is heaps .
Yes you are correct about the remote extender comes in a kit form and only takes about an hour to build.
The bass is fantastic i was going to use a sound card but the on board sound was so good on the asus motherboard that i didnt bother.

Looks great..... the only thing I would add would be some black fabric (or speaker foam) to the front of the jukebox to cover up the speaker cones ...... this would give it a more finished look (in my opinion of course)
good work
Hey .... what size monitor do you have in there?
-
Are the lower speakers enclosed more or less like a ported box or are they sharing the same space enclosed and ported?
Im a speaker idiot so Im asking questions. ;)
-
Looks awesome mate. Wouldn't mind building one myself.
I don't know much about speakers, but would the Accusound PA-1020 speaker cabs do pretty much the same job? Here is a link;
http://www.accusound.com.au/PA_Series.html
Reason I ask is, all I'd have to do is mount the cabs in the jukebox cabinet.
Where did you buy your speakers from?
The Pioneer amp, what sort of amp is that...home theatre etc?
Thanks
-
The speakers i got of ebay Australia in a kit form everything is supplied except the boxes Accusound DL890 i think it was from Audiosonic.
Yes the woofers are seperated in there own boxes
To answer more beers question the speakers you are looking at are a lot better than the ones i have used if you are building the cabinet it isnt hard to build the speaker boxes, your choice ?
To answer Uncle Ts question the speakers are protected by perforated metal and to the naked eye you can just see the speakers, with the camera the speakers are really visible ,probably the flash.
The amplifier is a Pioneer VSX-515 home theatre surround sound although i am not using the surround sound i have auxillary speaker connections at the rear so that i can add later if needed ,also it is great to listen to the radio at times, thats the main reason that i wanted the remote to be functional to change radio stations volume etc..

Sorry im using a 17' lcd monitor .

Thanks for the info!
So if I do go with the Accusound PA-1020 speaker cabs, will these give me a nice sound range? As in low bass and high frequencies. Or will I need seperate sub/s and tweeter/s?
Specs for the Accusound PA-1020 speaker cabs;
2 x 250mm (10”) LF Woofers
1 x Ti Compression HF Horn Driver
Cheers.

Sorry im no expert in speakers maybe kizer can help you out ?

Dont ask me. Heck I was asking you because Im speaker stupid. :dizzy:

LOL. Anyone else then?

The bad thing about using PA Speakers is the fact that these don't have a midrange driver. These will sound really shallow in my opinion. What you want is a 3 way cabinet with bass, midrange and tweeter with a good crossover and not just a crossover capacitor on the tweeter. The best crossovers seperate the 3 ranges of frequency so each speaker gets what it is supposed to and the crossovers have to be matched the best as possible to the speaker specs. There is alot that goes into good speaker design. Check out the speakers in my juke, this thing rocks!

PA speakers are normally very efficient, but with lousy bass response since thats where you need power. You will have things with 12" drivers that will not go below 80Hz because of how the driver and enclosure are tuned, they are typically used with bass bins in a pa environment if bass is needed. Most places dont since they just eq all the bass out and boost the hell out of everything above 80Hz to give it more thump thump.
Horn tweeters are crap in every way for home use, just don't go there.
-
You don't need bass below 80hz unless you want sub frequencies and are going to play rap crap. Big no on PA(public address) speakers being efficient at least not for audio. They are not designed for home use at all. If it's 2 way it's junk for home use because it just can't produce good quality sound across the audio spectrum and yes you are correct on the horns(to directional). Three way is the best with crossovers. The 15" bass i have in my cab didn't have much bass at low volume until i used a computer program and calculated the cab and the speakers and it told me what i needed for ports. The sound quality is unbelievable(i'm not bragging, i was even amazed). I am eventually going to put a video up of mine with sound for everybody to checkout.

Most pa speakers have efficiency greater then 97dB@1w@1m - most home gear never gets anywhere near that - hell, I have seen some that come with a quoted 104dB@1w@1m rating.
the problem is the max spl of these at the low end is usually quite limited, so authough they are speced down to 45 or whatever Hz, they cannot actually do that with any decent volumes, so you need to ideally high pass them at about 80.
And yes, its a shame that only the rap and hip hop releases recently have had their bass unmolested by awful dsp level maximization and harmonic synthisis crap. Its a sad reflection on the music industry, but thankfully the sacd releases are not molested in this way so you can still get decent sound. its just moving it to the PC is an analog affair. I guess they have to justify the rereleases of stuff in some way, so do so by assing up the redbook layer so that the sacd sounds better.

What's the frequency response look like when you talk about sound pressure level because that is all db is. Who cares how effecient it is if it can't produce the frequency range you can hear. Sound pressure is important to fill a room in a big hall etc. but if it doesn't sound pleasing then what's the use. Besides you don't have to worry that much about sound pressure in a home sound system that much, so why spend a fortune when you don't need to.
What state do you live in?

There are something like 12 dimensions in audio measurements, a freq response measures 2 of them with the rest being fixed, and the power is at a very low level.
When a speaker is ported it has less backpressure at the low end, which lets it travel more, so it will be near the limits of its exertion at lower frequencies at a low power level, at higher powers it hits, so its usable frequancy range is a lot lower then the advertised one which is at 1 watt usually. A sealed speaker will have a worse response, but will be able to run them at a higher power level which is why until recently, most high end speakers were big and sealed. The much higher power handling gave you the option of correcting the response to a degree with some equalisation which is not an option with a ported speaker.
And I do not live in the USA.
-
Ok! And your opinion on a 2 way versus a 3 way system? Would you put a PA speaker configuration in your juke, i would guess probably not and that is the point i'm making. I have to disagree on being at it's full exertion because most require a minimum of 10w drive power.
I just rechecked my bass speakers and they are 90db at 1w@1m ported. I think that is pretty darn good and it didn't cost me hundreds of dollars!

If I was combining with a sub, then a 2 way is fine if crossed at a high enough frequancy that the tweeter isnt trying to extend down to low, if its without a sub, then a 3 way with the lower crossover at around 220 or so, it can be higher then with a sub since you dont have to worry about directionality. I dont have any of the software I used at my old job anymore to really evaluate things which I missed, mind you actually getting the figures for the drivers was hard as.
and 90dB@1w@1m is on the high side for home gear, just watch for 4 ohm stuff that actually quote @2.83 V@1m which is 2 watts into 4 ohms. The thing is with a port, the woofer will easily bottom out if you ask too much bass from it, which is usually well within the published freq response figures

Jukeman:
Mind sharing the name of the program you used. I'm wondering if it might help me figure out what ports to use on my jukbox build.
thanks!

Faza,
Can you tell me where you got the numeric key pad from?

Happ sells those, although it might be oriented vertically. Can't remember exactly, but check 'em out. www.happcontrols.com

HappControls: It depend where he live... In EU, you need to order more than 150£ before they accepts order, why I dosent use them anymore (long time I have checked last time with them). I Hate this type of service.
I also remember have seen some keypad sell seperated in some computer stores, which can been used as a regular keypad and can been used. Typical these are for laptop use, but can also used here as well.

He asked where he might find them.
He didn't state where he lived.
I thought it was reasonable to answer him based on his question
I believe I should post information despite the problems another member might have with that information, especially since it answered his question
I answered his question. My answer does not depend on where he lives, my answer is based on the question he asked.
It appears you do not like Happ's policy towards its European customers, but it also appears as if you're upset with me suggesting such a place based on YOUR opinion of them, which shouldn't matter if the answer works for his needs.
-
sorry if I have upset you. It was of course not mean.
I just wrote it, since they do not diver in EU anymore, even they have very good products (and would even want some product, which was not arcade relativt things). But there are no problems around money, since they do just reject it in a email. So not so bad, if I wrote that.
In Denmark I do have seen some very good keypads sold in various radio stores, originally use for Laptops, but why not use them in a jukebox cabinet?

No, you did not upset me at all. I know there is a language barrier and I wanted to make my point easily understood for you. No worries!
