Title: MAME
Post by: markt on February 26, 2007, 11:42:52 pm
Is there a detailed explanation of how to use mame anywhere?
Kind of a mame for dummies?
I was on the mame website and downloaded the latest version of mame (mame0112b.exe) and mame 032 for a front end.
i extracted all the files, then tried putting a couple of roms in the folder marked roms.
When i open mame 32 it doesnt show any games being downloaded.
What am I doing wrong?

You have to run the "Audit" from the file menu......

I must be doing something wrong, even after running audit neither game is showing up.

I Typed "How do I use mame" in google and this is the 2nd link I got:

http://www.mameworld.net/easyemu/mameguide/mameindex.htm (http://www.mameworld.net/easyemu/mameguide/mameindex.htm)

the 4th link also seems helpful:

http://www.classicgaming.com/cgng/mame32.shtml (http://www.classicgaming.com/cgng/mame32.shtml)

Google is your friend.  ;)

MAME32 should be standalone...it should already have all the files needed....try looking in the MAME32 Folder....I bet you have a roms folder in that directory, and that folder is empty.

If that is the case, just copy over your roms to that ROMS folder in MAME32, run the audit and they should be there

Alright, well im a little further than what I was.
The two roms I was playing with now show up, and when clicked on,  the screens come up.
They have a bunch of "garbage" until I hit the alt button on my keyboard, then everything looks correct and the screen goes into attract mode.
No sound, just picture.
What key is a "help" key for keystroke info?
I am just playing around with mame on this computer to get a grasp on how everything works, before i start building a dedicated unit.

what roms are you using?

Have you verified that they work properly in MAME?

Some roms are not 100% working, so that could be why no sound....also, some roms require BIOS files

If you are new to this, I would definitely stick with MAME32 for now....it is literaly unpack it, drop in some roms and go.

Mame 32 is what I am playing around with.
I had both the latest mame file and  mame32, but have deleted both reloaded just the mame 32.

When you are in the game pressing the "TAB" key will bring up the options menu where you can set (or just learn what is allready) your key assignments.

Ok, I am having some problems with mame32.
The first picture is what the screen looks like when I first click a game title to play.
When I hit the "alt" button the game starts.
The second picture is when I press "tab".
I had the game on last night, I logged off the computer, when I got back on today there was no game showing to be available.
The rom for time soldiers was in the rom file, but would not come up when I hit audit.
After I deleted mame32 and downloaded again it would then play again after doing an audit.

Wow, thats weird...I may be wrong but that looks like some file is corrupted, there is a font missing, or a language setting (if one exists?) is wrong....

If I were entirely new to mame I would try looking at a step by step guide , so you can be sure that a reliable source is guiding you and you don't miss any steps..

Although most of us all have it down as second nature by this point, there may be things in those guides that a newbie needs...

Insight, anyone?

I agree about the step-step guide.  And I would also suggest clearing any trace of your current mame install (probably not the roms, just the software) and re-downloading it and re-installing. Then find a nice walkthrough of the set-up process.

also, just to be sure, get these legally free roms from the official site:

http://www.mamedev.org/roms/

i dont know about the others, but gridlee and robby roto definitely work. test mame with these and youll at least know if its the roms or something else...

Try AtomicFE - it has plug and play setup. All you have to do is download and install Atomic, download and install a plug and play module, then copy your roms to the rom folder. (c:\AtomicFE_v019\plugnplay\arcades_simple\roms) Done!

AtomicFE:  http://atomicfe.com/Downloads/AtomicFE_v019.exe (http://atomicfe.com/Downloads/AtomicFE_v019.exe)

Arcade Module:  http://atomicfe.com/Downloads/modulespnp/arcades_angelscry.exe (http://atomicfe.com/Downloads/modulespnp/arcades_angelscry.exe)

Documentation:  http://atomicfe.com/EN2/documentation.php (http://atomicfe.com/EN2/documentation.php)

Good luck!
