that looks to be the only way, besides hacking, as far as I know. I could try and hack the dreamcast controllers, but I have a Perfect 360 hooked up so I'm afraid it will be too much of a hassle...
but that's so expensive! And I'll need to buy PS2-to-dreamcast converters, which are both hard to find and also relatively expensive! Is there an option I'm unware of?

I hack DC controllers all the time, but I don't have a lot of knowlege about the Perfect 360. What is the reason you couldn't attach the joystick directly to a hacked DC controller?

Find yourself a madcatz dreamcast controller. These are so easy to connect - as the contacts have holes predrilled on the board. You can connect these up without solder.
I got mine for £1.50. Works perfect with Mame4ALL and my happ.

Perfect 360 uses 5 volt connection so I don't know if it would work with a dreamcast controller hack

HarumaN hooked me up with a dreamcast controller hack that INCLUDED the 5v leads. Unfortunately, I haven't gotten the chance to put them to use, yet. But yes, it's possible. :) P360s are what I'm planning on using...
