EDIT: It is now in my possession...see new responses for photos.
Oh crap...the wife is going to kick ---my bottom---! I am in negotiations with a gentlemen for his Donkey Kong Jr. The cabinet is in excellent condition with great side art, great marquee, good CPO, etc. I don't have a pic of the monitor, but he says it looks great. He wants $350.00 for it...which I'd jump on now if the wife wouldn't then detach my scrotum...
I am attempting to get it for $100.00 + some trades... we shall see.
Wish me luck!
DAMN THIS BLOOMIN' HOBBY!!!
:banghead:
EDIT: Added photos...

At work rest or play, it's a hobby that's always on my mind. Sometimes I wish there was an off switch.
-
Holy *!@#$! I just "fore-warned" the wife unit of the POSSIBILITY of this transaction and she was actually NOT UPSET! Holy crap! It may help that (a) My birthday is in about a month and (b) She knows that Donkey Kong Jr is in my top 5 of favorite arcade games. She's not about to release $350.00 just yet...but it's a step in the right direction.
OPINIONS? A good condition DKJr cabinet is WELL worth the $350 even...RIGHT?
;)
-
Yes. Thats a fair price. Best of luck.

Awe... don't be hatin'!
If this were a Donkey Kong, it'd be MINE right now. DK and Galaga are my two favorite games and if I were to ever come across a deal for either, i'd get the damn thing and then kiss the wifes ass for however long it took...but SHE knows that too and she'd be A-OK with it anyway.
DKJr is on my top 10 list...but it's not DK or Galaga...
-
How are you finding these deals? :notworthy: I went to an auction a month ago and even the crappy old Golden Tee 99 went for $1100. :laugh2:

If you are interested in a Golden Tee `98 with a 27' monitor, I can hook you up with a link.
It's all about looking LOCALLY... local classifieds...etc.

It COULD be a DK as well ... might have to wait and save so as to avoid trouble with your wife, but the cigarette savings ought to add up in no time ...

That DK jr cab looks bigger than a Popeye or original DK. Do all of the NES cabinets have the same dimensions?
I have been looking for a Play Choice or DK cab for a while now, maybe settle for a Mario Bros or possibly a Popeye. With the luck I am having I might as well build my own. I have seen a few Excitebikes and a trashy, overpriced Popeye in my area, but that is it.
Good Luck.

It may be the "trades" part of the deal your wife likes. Definitely trade off one of your crappy games for this one if you can.
-
Looks like a good deal to me.
I've been surprised by my wife's willingness to accept this hobby as well. Every time I look at purchasing something I comment to my buddy that my wife would probably kick me very hard in the scrotal area. Then when I actually talk to her about it, she's very understanding and just wants me to be happy. As long as the mortgage and other bills get paid, I'm pretty much free to spend a few hundred bucks here and there. I am a very lucky man. Of course if I tried to take advantage of it, and started buying up cabs like Frizzle seems to be doing lately, my scrotum would definitely be dating her shoe for a while.
Back on topic. You could probably convert that to an original DK fairly easily if you really wanted, but one thing to consider that I haven't seen you mention yet is space considerations. If there are a couple of dedicated cabs that you definitely want to have, you may want to wait until those become available to you before you start running out of room.
-
If this becomes mine, I will DEFINITELY convert it to a Double Donkey Kong...marquee and all... I simply LOVE this style cabinet.
EDIT: After taking a look at the link for Double Donkey Kong...I am not 100% sure if I could do it. The sounds for DK walking are the DKjr climbing sounds and it would annoy the hell out of me...not to mention the really really bad DK BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM sound.
....damn i'm anal.
-
Awe yeah! I pulled the trigger and got the Donkey Kong Jr! Well, to be more accurate, I just talked to the guy, he is on his way out the door but will be back in 2 hours, at which time I am going to go by and take a look at the cabinet. He said that the monitor is a little "fuzzy" but he hasn't "ever opened the thing to clean it". Yet another "I dunno what I have" deal!
$300 out the door.
W000t! I will post pix when I have it in my hot little (big?) hands!
EDIT: Oh yeah...he also has an ASTEROIDS at his brother-in-laws. I'll do what I can to find out what he'd sell that for...but he seems to know it's worth a bit. He also told me that he had a Ms. Pacman cocktail at his aunts "shed", but that when he want to go get it, someone had ripped it off. Bummer...
-
If the monitor is a Sanyo 20EZ, it is an easy monitor to cap and I would recommend capping the audio board as well while you are there.
IIRC, both BobRoberts and ArcadeShop stock kits for the monitor and audio board.
Cheers.
-
I'll take a look...hell, it could be that the guy has the screen adjustment set a bit high!
I'll likely cap it regardless though.
-
Alright...I went to go pick up the DK Jr and I was a little less enthusiastic once seeing the cabinet. While it is not in TERRIBLE condition, it certainly isn't in the best of conditions. the side art needs replacing...but since I am likely going Double Donkey Kong with this, it's not that big of a deal (I guess I'll inquire as to how to remove old side art later). The marquee is in good, but not great condition...there is some small paint chips missing. The plexiglass was half-assed installed and therefore warped a little, but it looks like it will flex back to shape. It looks like the genius who owned this tried to get the plexi out from the front without taking the retainers off...nice... ::)
The controls all work fine and I was surprised to see they used microswitch buttons (though not your standard happ style). The connectors do look a little beat though and need a light tough to attach/disconnect.
The unit is FRIGGIN' NASTY ASS DIRTY. I mean DIIIIIIRRRRRTY! When i got it home, you could not read any of the score or anything there was such a thick layer of grime. The monitor needs a cap kit for sure...the left side of the screen is cut off...in the photo below, the left side cut off is visible, but I had already adjusted the screen to show as much of the picture as possible...if I expand the picture (vsize), more of the picture gets cut off on the left. Can anyone please identify this monitor...is it a Sanyo? The damn chassis is tucked away pretty good...and it is so damn dirty in there that I have yet to go poke around to see what I can find. The glass itself shows zero burn in.
The sound is great...the coinbox shows a little over 38,000 hours ...thats not bad i'd imagine?
Along with the cabinet came a few extras...about $2.00 in quarters and a whole shitload of mouse droppings. No dead mouse though which is a good thing.
I tried to low-ball the guy and offer $200 after seeing the monitor but he was having nothing of it. $300 out the door. I ALMOST turned it down, but I have always wanted this kind of cabinet...so what the hell.
The T-Molding is going to need replacing as well.
Considering I am going to convert this to a Double Donkey Kong likely, I was going to replace the side art and marquee anyway...hmmm..
All in all I think it was a fair deal, certainly not the kickass deal I got with the Joust, but again, I really like this cabinet style.
The power cord is missing the ground pin so will need replacing...and I was surprised to learn there is no friggin' power switch of any kind?!? Did arcade owners just leave em running all night or did they unplug em or what?
Here are some photos...if you can help me identify the chassis id appreciate it. Also, opinions on the monitor issue is welcome...though it's likely just a cap issue.

More pix...

I just checked the Bob Robert's site and it does look like this is the Sanyo 20EZ... $5.00 for the cap kit? Nice!
-
Bastard! Let me have it! ;)

I wouldn't like those sound features either. My MAME version of DKJ doesn't have an 100% accurate sound. It kinda sucks but it is like hey ya know it is better than no DKJ at all.
I woulda paid $300 for that. Nice score!

Thanks...and I still may get it....because it SAVES HIGH SCORES...and it would be cool to play DK when i wanted to even with the sound issue.
Can anyone confirm that is the Sanyo 20EZ monitor before i go order a cap kit?
-

Yes, someone can.
>:D
Looks like a 20EZ to me .... don't forget the audio rebuild kit ... if you're going to haul it out and cap it, might as well do the audio board as well.
Cheers
-
Thanks...and I plan on doing just that...at $5.00 per kit it would be ridiculous to do otherwise.
Now, I managed to locate the ON/OFF switch (at the bottom)...
Question: It looks like someone added an aftermarket power cord. The two power sockets inside (for the marquee, etc) are only 2 prong. The power cord on the unit is a 3 prong cord with the ground prong broken off.
Does this cabinet supposed to have a 3 prong power cord or a two prong one that someone used a 3 prong and hacked it for whatever reason?
-
Even if it needs a little work, I'd say you got a fair price. And if you need to justify it to yourself or your wife, you can always figure that you paid about $200 ea for DKJr and Joust.
-
Nice one ! I think it's a good deal. I paid €225,-(= about $300,-) for my Mario Bros/Radarscope cab but that was WITHOUT PCB ! Things are a bit different here in the market then in the US though....
-
Welp, I ordered a new power cord, monitor cap kit and sound board cap kit from Bob Roberts today. The cabinet cleaned up pretty decently. Does anyone have a trick for removing side art?
Upon close inspection there IS screen burn in, but not much. The counter shows less than 38,000 hours...that counter IS hours right or is it coins?
-
That would be the number of coins. ::)
-
38,000 coins...$9,500 made on a cabinet that probably cost what...$3,000 to buy originally?
...and yah, it was a dumb question. :dizzy:
-

I am using a hair dryer to aid in removing some sideart from a cabinet right now. A real heat gun would be hotter/work better I think, but the hair dryer is acceptible. Just heat up a spot, get a corner started and keep the heat on the next part to come up.
-
Yeah, a good heat gun works great. Try scoring the artwork with a razor every 2 -3 inches in one direction. This way you can focus the heat on one strip at a time and pull it offf in strips.
If you have any residue from the glue try using Xylene to disolve it. It is the main chemical in Goof-off. You will be amazed!
