Title: What does "multi scan" mean?
Post by: somunny on February 23, 2007, 10:52:41 am
I have two monitors, both of which are "multi scan" models.  What exactly does this mean.  Is it just fancy jargon or is this a feature that would be useful on a monitor running MAME?

I believe it means it will run at more than 1 resolution. So, yes, it would be useful as it would help you run more games at the proper resolution.

Just another way of saying, "more than one resolution".

Hmmm... ok then.  :)

How about "multi sync"?  Does this have anything to do with refresh rates?  One monitor I have also has BNC connectors.  Do these offer any improvement over a standard VGA connection?

Multi-sync and Multi scan are the same thing. It means they can do more than one resolution.

The BNC connectors are most likely RGB inputs. These can be very useful. NickG and Snaake both use NEC multi scan computer monitors. The RGB inputs can be used for hooking up real arcade inputs such as Jamma. I know NickG has a jamma setup hooked up to his.

I don't know whether or not there would be any advantage to hooking up your mame pc via RGB instead of the VGA inputs, but I am interested to find out as I also have one that will be going in my cab. If there isn't any advantage of hooking up the pc via the RGB inputs, I would like to hook up my PC via the VGA and have a Jamma setup on the RGB's. I am interested to see if any other good info on this gets posted here.

Ah, okay.  Must be brand-name type stuff.  Thanks.

Horseboy:

I have a set of vga to BNC cables at home.  I'll try and do a "Pepsi Challenge" this weekend.   :)

Sweet. What kind of monitor is it, BTW?
