hate to say it but I do. this is for my 11yr old.
I do not know the answer. I would like to know what 2 words are in this sentence.
She saw the right button under the glass
what is (right) and what is (button)
noun, verb, adj. adverb , direct object?
thanks.
-
I think we found it at yahoo kids
right is a adj.
button is a noun

Yes, that could be the correct answer. But isn't button the direct object as well?
EDIT: If the instructions were to identify the parts of speech, then button is not the D.O. (well, it is, it's just that direct object is parts of a sentence, while the other choices are for parts of speech).

I write well. I've had many english classes in my life, including four college-level english classes. I did not learn to correctly identify all the parts of speech until I had to in order to learn a second language. It was really tough in the beginning, because foreign language professors tend to take for granted that you know english correctly (which I did, intuitively, but I couldn't articulate the rules or apply labels to adverbs and articles and prepositions, etc.).
Long story short, your educational system has failed you. They do not emphasize the importance of grammar and writing nearly enough in school.
-
Gah. I diagramed sentences until my hand fell off in high school.
Geography is where my education failed me. Only had one brief bit of it in my K-12 education that I can recall, and it was United States centric.
-
to true...
I can not spell a lick or tell a noun from a verb
need a jet engine rebuilt.
yep I can do it.

need a PC built. I can do that
most car repair is also OK
English.... I suck and all ways will.
I have no real intrest in it

The perfect Geography/Math problem for you, Saint....
You live in Chicago. There's a mint Centipede in Denver as well as a mint Dragon's Lair in Atlanta. How many miles round trip would that be and how long would it take you to drive to both destinations, then return home safely?
:D :D

too true...

They do at my school. Or, at least, my English teacher does. I have learned more about grammar, etc. this year than all other years combined. Seriously, my English teacher is such a great person. How many of you had a teacher who advocates objectivism in high school?
-
The year we were supposed to cover English parts of speech my English teacher got sent to Kuwait. The replacement nun made us read Shakespeare out loud in class for 6 months.
-
I never really learned all of the parts of speech until like 2 years ago. I mean, I always knew nouns, verbs and some other little things like conjunctions. Then I finished school in 2003 except for 1 English class, so I took that via correspondence course. I have to say it is honestly the only thing I ever actually learned in college. You can't fake your way through a correspondence course.
-
Hell, where I was in college, many people were faking their way through entire CMPSCI degrees. :laugh2:

that should be TOO true..unless you're speaking to true.

That should be "speaking to True", as True would be a name of a person, which is capitalized. ;D

I was pwned
wait a minute...no it shouldn't!

Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader? (http://www.fox.com/areyousmarter/)
I got 9 out of 10 right. :D.
Some people probably score lower. But that's because all we learned in elementary school is random ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---- like bats have how many testicles, and stuff like that. Every subject except math was based on random facts - so that, really, a 5th grader could ask you a question you can't answer.
On another note- don't forget to get the wallpaper (http://www.fox.com/areyousmarter/features/download/smarter_desktop_1024x768.jpg). Seriously - who in their right mind would make something like that their wallpaper?
-
Yeah, those questions are pretty ridiculous. The show should be called "Can you remember stuff from 20 years ago better than these 5th graders who learned it last week?"
-
God, I can't stand Jeff Foxworthy. He's so not funny. After seeing a preview for this show, and now having taken that quiz it is clear that this will continue in the long line of lame ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- Foxworthy has his name attached to.
You know you're a redneck if . . . ::) ---smurfing--- makes an entire career out of a single joke that wasn't particularly funny in the first place. It's no wonder that Friends and Everybody Loves Raymond enjoy runs of 950 seasons while masterpieces like Arrested Development get cancelled halfway through season 3.
-
I got 7 out of 10 for that quiz which puts me at forth grader level. What the hell is a gross of pencils? Had a 1 in 3 chance of getting the US rep question as well as a few others.
-
I got the one about the equinox wrong... oh well.
A gross is a standard warehouse/inventory amount, actually. Things that get shipped in quantity often get shipped by the gross.
-
10 out of 10 here...all extremely easy questions...but then again, I am a genius.
-
As a kid, I used to buy bottle rockets by the gross. ;D

Masterpiece? I think you are going a little too far with that one there bro.

Oops, sorry proctor.

Why ruin the fun for everyone else?

Rent season 1 and get started. I know that you would not have made that comment if you were familiar with AD. On the other hand, you might think Friends and/or Everybody Loves Raymond is a good show, in which case there's nothing I can do for you because you obviously have brain damage (probably from holding your breath over and over again for five minutes at a stretch throughout the night).

That was my bad. I've editted my original post to remove the "answer". Chad should edit the quote in his post as well.
