Why would someone blast porn in a multi-tennant building in the first place, especially a rape-style porn? I feel kinda sorry for the dude who busted the door down.

According to a criminal complaint, the neighbor told police that Van Iveren pounded on the door and kicked it open without warning February 12, damaging the frame and lock.
He not only knocked...he pounded on the door.
Of course...if the guy was watching porn...he probably first had to get dressed before answering the door, and most likely wasn't going to answer anyway. Why ruin the mood?
Van Iveren should be given a medal...or at least a pat on the back. How many other people would have the sack to do that to save a stranger? No one was hurt...make him pay to fix the door...case closed.

OK...what if the guy WAS raping a girl? This guy would be a hero. You, on the other hand, would be ashamed of the fact that you did NOTHING to help her.

Yah, I have to agree, the sword was a bad idea. I'd have simply grabbed my aluminum baseball bat. It is much more satisfying hearing the crunch of bones rather than the slick sound of flesh being sliced apart. Plus, I am not all too keen on going to jail for murder...cuz even if the dude WAS raping a woman, to come in and chop the dudes head off would mean some serious legal issues...but to bust in and thump the dude a couple of times with a baseball bat (not in the head...just want to break bones, not kill)... not so much so.
I imagine I could do some serious damage with ole' Aluminum at full swing to the chest, knee, etc.
That said, I would imagine if I were to bust in and see a rape in progress, I am not sure I would have the wherewithal to "aim"...likely would just "go off".

I was installing a carbon monoxide/smoke detector upstairs in my house a few months ago. The windows were all open and I was running a lot of tests with it. As I'm walking through the living room I notice a guy wandering around in my yard. I get a little ticked and go outside to find out what he's trying to steal to discover that he heard the alarms and was trying to determine if anyone was inside and needed help. I thanked him, explained that I'm running tests, and he went on his way.

Say I am walking down the street and I see some dude snatch an old lady's purse. The old lady screams bloody murder. I chase the guy down and tackle him, breaking his leg in the process. He rolls over and it's Johnny Knoxville. The whole thing is a Jackass skit. No actual crime was committed. It was a misunderstanding that resulted in some damage being done. Should I go to jail for that too?

Here's a real one:
A wrestling coach is watching his son in a wrestling match. The kid he's wrestling has him in a hold that technically isn't illegal, but could cause permanent damage. The referee knew this, but he's taking to long to decide whether or not to stop the match, instead of taking the chance on his son losing mobility of his shoulder he rushes the mat and throws the other kid across the floor.
This is unacceptable behavior and the father should and has take responsibility for his actions.

Er...I saw the video...it no way was the referee taking "too long to stop the match." There was literally a couple SECONDS at most that the kid was in that hold. You are comparing apples to oranges anyway.

The dude heard a woman screaming for help, he went up there, banged on the door, kicked it in when there was no response, and saw a dude buttoning up his pants. You damn right he had every reason to point a sword at the guy.
Ok so the buttoning up the pants thing wasn't in the report but it is highly likely the guy was a bit disheveled after "practicing his mantra".
I think the porn guy should be charged with disturbing the peace and lewd public conduct. Once that sound leaves your windows, it is in the public you know.
Why in the world are you so up on this guy going to Jail Dartful? With your "Bush Won" Mantra, one would think you'd be handing the guy a medal.

These "what if" stories and "I'd do this" sound really good and might make you feel a little better about yourself, but they'll never happen that way.
There is a risk your taking when you go out of your way to help others. Not just the action movie risk, but the legal risks after the action. If you aren't willing to take those risks then you should just stay in the basement apartment with your mom.
I'm bothered by this because, I don't want to be paying a lawyer to explain why I felt it necessary to kill a guy who kicked my door in carrying a sword.
If somebody was banging and kicking at your front door (for what ever reason) would you answer it?
By not enforcing the law it's saying that it doesn't matter what others do to you, as long as they did it with good intentions.

I would have done the same thing he did (I don't have any swords, though. Would have grabbed something, my XD or whatever was handy) It would be the only right thing to do. By the time the cops get there the damage would be done.

Hey...I understand this point of view...as it is a VALID point of view. Some of us WOULD accept that risk (of possibly recieving bodily harm and of the possible legal ramifications), some of WOULDN'T accept that risk. This guy accepted it. Bravo! I just hope there are people like this guy around if, god forbid, something bad were to happen to those who WOULDN'T accept the risk or their families.

now that IS public, although i bet its argued its not. it reminds me of a couple in my home town some years ago that were feeling in the mood after moving into their house. they only had the curtains to put on the floor. so they took them down. for some unknown reason, an off duty policeman saw them at it (and would have had to be in their yard) and arrested them for lewd behaviour!

If the guy really was a rapist the ending of this story would be completely different.
A real criminal in his own home against a guy who lives in a basement apartment with his mom. It's ridiculous to believe this guy would have been able to stop a jaywalker, let alone a violent criminal.
