Just wanted to fyi to see if you guys have tried out the new daphne for dummy's program, I have always had issues setting up daphne but the new beta 1.0 version is total plug & play, the program, automatically searches the internet for whatever parts of the program you do not have & sets it up for you, very easy to us... I have very fast internet & it took me 2 days, to download what I needed, dragons lair 1 & 2, space ace, & tharies quest require disk from digital leasire, these cost $46.00 with shipping
or
do what I did you can get brand new sealed up from ebay for $18.00 so I can now play these also, if anyone needs the ebay link I can get it for you...the seller has now brand new sealed boxed sets

Is that the right version? My understanding is that you need the DVD versions from Digital Leasure to decrypt the files downloaded from the Daphne folks?!?

I did a quick search and I can't find anything other than on the front page where it distinctly say "DVD's"...unfortunately that auction is to the CDROM version.
EDIT #2: From everything I just read on their forums, CDROM = Nope, DVD = Success.

I don't want people to just click OK without reading the message and then complain that they didn't know that a DVD would be required.
I'd think that he'd mention CDROM if it were compatible? I sure HOPE it works...id' happily shell out $20 for the set.

Yeah, its pretty good. I managed to get Space Ace fully working for the first time ever on it on my cab the other day.
I already had the run the original DVD through DVD2Daph.
Popped the files in the correct folder, fired up Daphne Beta and it downloaded the ROMS automatically.
Dont think I will bother with the download of the whole mpeg stuff though, it will eat bucketloads into my monthly broadband limits.

I'm pretty sure the CD's will work as I believe they wrote dvd2daph to work with CD's as well as the DVD's. I want to say that most people prefer the DVD's because they have the extended scenes to play the altered/some say improved versions of DL ... but I'm not 100% certain those scenes aren't on the CD's as well.

No they won't. This beta is just now publically available but it's been available via cvs for a long while now. The auto-setup feature doesn't convert the dvds, rather it downloads a master, pre-converted video from a secure location. They have a deal with digital leisure and thus far it only applies to dvds. So basically the dvd is a key, nothing is used off of it.

Interesting. Does it matter if it's DVD-Video or DVD-ROM?
DM could still use the old method to convert his CD's though right? It's just more painful.

Well I'll tell you guys a secret... if you go to amazon.com you can usually find NIB copys of all of digital leisure's stuff for peanuts. I got all of the american laser games they offer for less than 30 dollars. That's like 10 games!

kinda funny but i could not figure it out and went back to the origanal method prior to V1.0 and use mamewah as the front end still but daphne is a great emu without a doubt.

Just wondering if any one who has got Daphne working (Daphne Loader 2.1.46) working (well getting started...). Basically what do I do once I have installed Daphne, to be able to download the video of DL, DL2 and other games using the loader (I have the DVD roms Digital Leisure)? I just cannot work it out how to do so from the menues. I just feel silly as people are making it sound easy getting the games downloaded using the new Daphne loader and I cannot get started! Anywone...Please.

I do not have my dvd's yet, but all you should have to do is have the dvd in the drive & click start game, all the program does is use the dvd for a key

Thanks DM, that was the only option I did not try!. I got it downloading now thanks. BTW Besides the 4 DVD ROM available from DL, can the Daphne loader also donload the other games? and if so how is this done? I assuming that all other titles (besides the 4 from DL) cannot b downloaded. Also what is the version of Dragons Lair which the loader downloadrs, is it the enhanced version of DL?

All of these can be downloaded just the 4 from dit. leasure, you have to have the key, to start the download for each one click config. on each seperate title & the program will download all you need for each program, it takes a while, i spent 2 days downloaded at over 900kb per sec

It's worth it though. If you have a problem running daphne it's nice to know that the roms/framefiles and videos are correct. It makes it much easier to track problems down.

I am currently downloading the content for DL2. DL1 converted very easily, I have the 20th anniversary DVD-Video. No framefile or other setup required, just launch DaphneLoader and click the game.
Non-broadband users need not apply. :(
I recommend all users of the 20th anniversary package to upgrade their Daphne installation.

I called the support phone number today and they did confirm to me that while they are listed as DVD on Amazon, they are CDs. :banghead: :banghead: They let me know that I can either refuse the package when UPS delivers it or accept the package and request an RMA number to send it back. What does everyone think I should do?

Package has not arrived yet. I will not be accepting it.
For what it's worth, the package arrived and I declined acceptance of it. UPS sent the package back to J&R and J&R has credited my credit card with the full refund.

I have to get Daphne running next on my machine, I'm on dial-up though :( But I remember Dragon's Lair in my local arcade... I remember dying over and over too... so it would be nice to finally beat that game... kind of like an unanswered question that needs righting in my life :laugh2:

I remember dying over and over too... so it would be nice to finally beat that game... kind of like an unanswered question that needs righting in my life :laugh2:
The amount of memory work required on DL2 is staggering. Difficulty 10/10 unless you have lightning reflexes. There are directional prompts on the first two levels which help somewhat.

If you use the new Daphne, no ripping is needed. Just start Daphne, insert the DVDs, and select Dragon's Lair and it does all the magic for you.

Except for a glitch in MACH 3, where it just crashes, I've had no probems with .99.7 . The new beta, on the other hand, though it did auto d/l the DL suite, it won't do anything but tell me I'm missing files on any of the other games. I ran into this with the pre-beta version in-between .99 and beta. The only reason I'm interested in the beta is it's supposed to be higher quality video an all...not even sure if it's smaller, though they were saying it was supposed to be...but it's been a small hassle.

OK, so I don't have the Official DVD's. If I DID, do you only have to load the DVD in once (to get the auth code) or do you have to insert it every time you play? Reason I'm asking is, I'm in the process in building a cabinet, and don't want to have to access the DVD drive every time I want to play a Daphne game. If that's the case maybe I should just stick with the previous version on Daphne?

No, the whole reason to use Daphne is so you don't have to use those DVD's, as they're complete in themselves. It's a single-time authentication. I mean, would you expect anything less?....Matt and company aren't a company.

I did beat Dragon's Lair 1, though. :applaud: The ending is very short, unfortunately.

Dragon's Lair II seems like one of those NES games that can drive you to throw the controller against the screen or try and break the controller in half :timebomb: :laugh:

The latest version of Daphne requires a Digital Leisure product (DVD or newer, not CD-ROM!) the first time you launch one of their games (Dragon's Lair, Dragon's Lair 2, Space Ace, or Thayer's Quest), as a sort of copy protection scheme.

I just ordered the 20th anniversary edition from half.com. I've never run Daphne before so I'm not too familiar with it. Will it work with Mamewah? If not, is there a FE that will work with MAME and Daphne?

I'm a relative newbie to all this, but I'll try to understand--anybody feel free to chime in & correct me.
I'm using MALA & it runs both MAME & Daphne files fine. For Daphne, I created *.bat files for each game & MALA is essentially running the bat files that are the command line text to launch Daphne, rather than generating its own command lines.
To figure out the command lines for Daphne, I used the Daphne Downloader & set up everything how I liked it for each game (coins/credit, lives/game, difficulty, video options, etc.), then launched the game, quit the game, then looked at the daphnelog.txt file generated, which shows the command line text that was sent to launch daphne.exe with the correct settings, & I essentially copied & pasted that text into the bat files that I created, which MALA launches.
Clear as mud?

I'm confused about what I need to buy. There are two versions of the 20th anniversary edition on Amazon (one PS2 one PC) for around $20. But it seems the PC version is CD-ROM< and my understanding is that won't work.

[EDIT] Oops, I noticed a post on this thread referring to volcanogames on Ebay. I did a search and now they claim to have the HD/DVD version of 20th Anniversary Edition for $19.99. So I ordered that one and we'll see how it goes.

Sure - just change the options to point to your files instead of the automatically download setting. Or, run AtomicFE and use my Daphne Plug and Play module...

Ok... Just to shed a little light on this subject being a member of the Daphne community...
1) There's 2 types of discs you can buy to decrypt the video files that Daphne downloads for DL, DL2, SA, and TQ... They are DVD-ROM (20th Anniversary Edition) and DVD-VIDEO (the ones that say X-Box and PS2 Compatible)... Both versions will decrypt the downloaded footage...
2) DVD2Daph was an option to use your dvds, but honestly, let Daphne download the files, and use those instead... They are the actual laserdisc footage, and look 100 times better than the DVD footage... And, the moves and timing is better if you use the laserdisc rips... The DVDs have a known issue with the timing of the moves...
3) Thayer's Quest has issues, AND requires a lot of buttons (that aren't able to be re-mapped), and IMHO, it's not worth spending the money on the DVD unless you just have to have it in your collection... There's other means of getting Daphne to play TQ...
4) All of the other games in the list of Beta 1.0 will automatically download the footage, and roms needed to play the games...
5) CD ROMS WILL NOT WORK PERIOD!
6) The new Dragon's Lair HD WILL NOT WORK PERIOD!
I can't stress enough that you should just be patient, and let Daphne download everything it needs to download, and also, that the footage that Daphne downloads, it soooooo much better than the quality that you'll get from using your DVDs... And the pirated MPEGS that are floating around out there, cannot compare to the quality of the footage that Daphne uses...

My order arrived 3 days after placing it and it works great with the Daphne Downloader (luckily I'd ordered the "PS2 & XBOX" DVD version). It's interesting that the box claims you can play this directly from your DVD player using the arrow buttons and enter key on your remote. I'll have to try that sometime. I didn't know the DVD player could conditionally jump to different scenes based on the timing of when you press a button on the remote. It'll be nice seeing it all hooked up to MaLa in my cabinet.
