How do you guys like this for my Centipede Conversion?
I'm going from something retro (classic) that will match the centipede marquee somewhat...
Bash me!
-
nice. I think you need to move your trackball further down. If you want to play Golden tee you're really going to smack the monitor.

Believe it or not, it is as low as it can go. The control panel meets the front at an angle. And this is as low as it will go without hitting the bottom of the 'box' :(
I've never played GoldenT. Never did quite like it. Am I missing a good game? :)

Here's a mockup of what I have in mind....
-
I like that you kept the theme. What did you do with the old cp?

This cabinet had been converted to a Double Dragon. They took the original centipede metal cp, attached another layer of metal on top, and drilled new holes right through.
So, the cp is a total loss as it is. I'm keeping it just in case I ever want to use it.
-
I like it. I don't like how the left directional arrow for player one stuffs into the boarder though.

AHHHHH, that explains why you have the double dragon shaped control panel instead of the centipede one.
-
No, it is purely coincidental. The shape of the cp I'm building has nothing to do with Double Dragon being the conversion!
-
I dig it - it is nice to stay consistent with the centiped theme. Too bad you can't move the trackball down further - what if you routed out the inside bottom of the control panel? You might get some more inches that way...What about having a blue background(like the marquee) or white (like sideart). Just some ideas.
GoldenT is a good game - but most prefer the PC version (more like the arcade). It's just a matter of choice - I think you'd hit the machine no matter what position the trackball is in - the shape of the cab is completely different than the sloped screen of GT.
-
I think it looks really good, but i do have a few comments/questions:
Since you aren't really stuffing too many controls into the space you have, why make the CP so deep? You could stay closer to the original look and probably save yourself some work by making it the same size as the original and not having that large overhang. Plus, i'm betting that it's going to dig into your hips/gut when you start playing on it because of the way it sticks out.
I, personally, would try to stick as close to the original as possible. Colors, fonts, pictures, etc. If you want to go retro, go all the way! :) Your cabinet already looks very authentic. You might as well continue the theme on the CP and bezel as well.
What is the black circle over the 2nd player for? Not a trackball, since you've got one in the middle. And it looks far too big to be a spinner.
I'd consider moving the P1 and P2 start buttons further apart. That will give you more "elbow room" around the trackball. This all depends on how you plan to use the trackball, of course.
Overall, i think it looks great. But these are things i would consider if it were mine. Great cabinet, BTW. Centipede is one of the top three most played games on my cab, by far.
-
The cabinet I used for the mockup is NOT mine!
I will post pics of mine when ready. It's looking great so far, but still a lot of work ahead.

Cueball, Frostillicus:
Thanks for your comments. Did not have time to answer in more detail, as my first baby girl was born! (I'm a Pop! lol)
Anyhow, I would love to be able to move my trackball further down, but there isn't anything I can do about it. You cannot see it in the cp overlay, but the trakball 'enclosure' extends down a few inches, so any further down will hit the angled joint on the fron of the control panel
I too dislike thet everything seems to be crammed at the top of the panel, and I'm considering shortening the bottom somehow. This will require rethinking the whole c.p. shape, and I might not be able to use the Dynamo design.
I'll see what I can do.
Project on hold for a good while now that the baby is here though. ;D
-
Hey guys... I'm trying something simpler. How do you like this control panel instead?
I traced a fungus following Frosticullus tutorial... :)

oooh I like it! are you really set on black background, though? I'm checking out that centipede marquee up at top of the thread(i know it's not your cabinet, but it's still cool!) and I'm really digging the day-glo colors and huge rounded lines. I liked your colored outlines around the edges of the CP - but the fungi is awesome - abstract and bright ;D Or maybe cover the whole CP in mushrooms?
I'd outline the cp in that bright yellow - maybe round the corners off somehow to go with all the circular shapes. Ok i'm done sorry got carried away - looking good justin
-
OK, thanks for everyon'es feedback. I think we have a winner now! What do you think? :D
-
Okay, i really like the 3rd one. Classic feel (though i still think it's too deep). :)
Oh, and congrats on the addition to the family! :D
-
Ahhh!!! Turn it off!!!
Kidding, but seriously that last one is too loud. Personally I think you hit it closest on the first try.
-
Ahhh!!! Turn it off!!!
Buahaha LOL!
Hrmm... I didn't know there was such a thing as 'too loud' for arcade art :D
-
That is sweet - really nice! This is the best one yet.
-
The 3rd one is too busy for me. I like the 2nd best.
-
I vote for the second one, simple but very effective.
-
That third one is amazing, and it ain't too "loud" either :o
I want it. Give it to me. Seriously, I want to use that design, maybe modified a bit cuz I'm building a single joystick. Let me know if you are willing to share.
-
I guess a more relevant question would be if you could pass me the original images, clipart or whatever, that you used to piece those designs together?
-
Sharing is what this board is all about. Send me private message with your email and I will send the fungus and the star to you.
These are Adobe Illustrator files, vector art, which I traced. (Took me hours!)
-
These are the three items I've created so far. All inspired by Centipede Marquee and Sideart.
I've got these in illustrator format. Will sharing these get me in any trouble?
-
Pretty sure you won't get into any trouble, at least around here - we are all about sharing.
Now all you need is to trace the big worm... ;D

I'll leave the worm to the pros. Anyone? This is the only element needed to complete the artwork :)
