I'm extrememly confused here. I'd like to use a program that displays what the buttons do in mame games (Fire, jump, punch, kick, etc). I guess Cpviewer is the program that can do this. Can anyone please tell me everything I'd need to get this working? I just don't understand it at all. I have the xml file somewhere that contains all the controls for just about every rom out there but what do I do next? Is there a tutorial somewhere or a configurator that can help me? I'd appreciate any help. I've tried to run cpviewer before and got nowhere. Very confusing. Thanks guys.

I'm interested in this as well. Will this work with MAME v.55 with GameLauncher? If not, will CPMaker or Johnny5?

http://www.cpviewer.emuchrist.org/ (http://www.cpviewer.emuchrist.org/)
Go to the website and go to the downloads page. There is documentation on how to do everything. I haven't actually done it myself yet but I would like to do it sometime.

I couldn't find a readme in the files. I'm also still afraid to do this because I'm not sure if it works with MAME v.55.

I believe that this is the page with the documentation that was refered to earlier. I havn't used any of it yet but this is where I am going to start my research.

hope this helps (for your sake and mine)

I use it with Mala, it's easy. Just follow the instructions, it took all of 10 minutes to set up not counting my custom graphic.

Anyone else having problems with the CPviewer website? I can't seem to get there...
-
Works for me here...
I was using it for awhile in mala, but I had too many times where it would not clear when a button was pressed, or not come up at all and hang, and I ended up having to clear it manually..
When it worked, it worked great though!

Still can't figure this thing out. Very confusing. Any more help/tips?

The developer of that program is a member here and I'm sure he could help you get it figured out. You might have an easier time getting his attention with a post in the software forum or over at mameworld.
-
It's not going to work unless you have a front end sending it the proper string. What front end are you using?

Mala Rc9

I just downed and tried it in a dos window and it worked fine.

It has its own controls.ini file that contains the controller actions such as fire, jump, etc that it uses to populate the controller picture labels

Well for starters I need to design my own control panel based off the one that's on my cab correct? Any tips on how to approach this?
-
Mala Rc9
Ok, for Mala you go to the Control Panel Viewer tab, and put in the path to your executable (C:\emulators\cpv2\CPV2.exe or whatever) then for the command line is should look like this:
-r=%rom% -c=%parent%
greaser: If you don't have Photoshops skills just take a picture with a digital camera of your joystick + buttons and use that. Personally I only show player 1 controls, it let's things be nice and big and clear, since 9 times out of 10 if it's a 2 player game the second player's controls are just the same.

Thanks! I'll give it a shot!

I know others have used this and J5 fine with MaLa.
When you get it running can you PM me what details you ended up using and I can update the Wiki on CP set-ups using mala..
Thanks

Ok, I added the command line as you said, and now I get this error:

There should be a default mamelayout.lay file in your layouts folder, but it doesn't really matter since you need to make your own anyways. Now that you have Mala set up to call it you just need to follow the instructions in the docs folder.
-
I'll see if I can figure it out. Problem is I have NO documentation for this in the MAME docs folder. If extracting/executing Mala/CPViewer was supposed to creat something in that folder, it didn't. Additionally there is n o docs folder in Mala....

Dude.. He means the CPViewer Docs. :D
You have done all you need to do in MaLa and Mame. ;D
You now need to set-up CPViewer according to your specific needs
Please read the CPViewer Docs .
The link has been provided for you in earlier posts ;) Hint: THE PDF AT THE BOTTOM

Anybody have a preference for Johnny5 over CPVeiwer ? I myself am wondering which one to try.

Try em both.
The price is right.
The hardest part is creating the graphic of your control panel, and that will work in either program.
