Nice work Youki!
I love the search feature and intro animation. Mmm scrolly text :) Are you an oldskool demo coder by any chance? Ever played with the Amiga's blitter chip back in the days?

Thanks. :)
I'm not really a oldschool DEMO coder . But i was really a Demo Fan. (on Commodore 64 , Atari St and Amiga). I made 2 little demo 100% in assembly language one for c64 and one for Atari St .
But in this old good time, i spent most of my free time to develop little video games using these technics.
And indeed , the spirit behind my layouts comes directly from theses oldscool demos!
That's a paradox , i try to bring some inovation in today's Front End by using technics used 20 years ago! ;)
The other paradox is that , 20 years ago ... you were able to do the same things on a 8Mhz computer... now you need at least a 700 mhz! :dizzy: (of course the resolution is not the same, image we manipulates are lot bigger.. but not sure it is really justified...)
-
Another Paradox is that Paradox (http://www.paradogs.com/) was a famous demo group for the Amiga, and their still alive and well today.
I wrote my first scrolly on C64, but it's really cool seeing these sort of effects in new software. And your right it's bloody crazy how you need more processor power to do the ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- you could back then. Bloody Winslowz :)
-
but it's really cool seeing these sort of effects in new software.
The bitmapped scrolltext is not a new feature of Atomic 0.19 . I introduced it in 0.15 i think.
I had already some layout using that. like the Space Harrier and the Racing one.
Coders of today don't know or forget old good methods... it 's pity.
arrf..the C64 ... wonderfull machine!

Nice job, youki. I like the new videos. The intro is cool too - did you create that?
-
Oh how I'd love to come across a kickass animated VERTICAL layout....

I would love to be able to do that , but no... :'( It is a great contribution of a Atomic User : MYX

Havok have discovered a little bug.
Intro video was not centered when you used a screen resolution different that the layout one.
A fix is here :
http://www.atomicfe.com/Downloads/Atomic.exe (just replace the .Exe)
This patch has been included in the normal and update distribution , so if you downlaod the version now, you don't need that .exe.

All I can say is this is a awesome front end thanks for all you do for the mame community

Thanks :)

I'm deciding between AtomicFE and GameEx as my front end...
On Atomic FE, are there menus to divide roms by emulators? I don't want to have all my NES, SNES, Mame, ect. all in one long list. I couldn't find any info on this.
Thanks
-
yes, you can over time setup everyone in its own group, I have used both of these frontends, both are great, I lean towards atomicfe, due to the plug & play etc, its just a really good front & its not to hard to setup

If you install the plug and play modules, each emulator has its own menu selection. You start with a menu where you select the system, then that opens a list of all the games for that respective emulator. Check out the documentation link in my sig. I haven't updated it for 019 yet, however the plug and play stuff still works the same.

If ONLY I were that talented. I could probably whip up a STATIC vertical layout, but animation is a little beyond my abilities. Whoever did the new stock FE, if he could do a vertical version of the same, i'd be SOLD SOLD SOLD I do believe.
-
Whoever did the new stock FE
You mean the default layout? You want a vertical version? Ok... you will have! ;)
But did you try the existing one in vertical mode? With Atomic you can use horizontal layout in vertical mode.. Atomic rotate and strecht for you.

Yes, you can of course. You can use Plug'n play module to that, or you can do that by yourself. It is what i call "Multi-configuration" . In fact you make each configuration for each emulator as if you want only work with it. Then you use the "Multiconf_wizard" tool to build your configuration Tree . Then you can navigate through your emulator or what you want.
If you download the Old documentation from my website, you will find a Tutorial for Multiconf_wizard.

So , Sold or not Sold? ;)

Just a little thing i forgot to mention about the 0.19 that could be usefull.
If you don't have the Codec for the Intro Video , you will find in Atomic Installation folder a file named :
codec_tscc.exe
Just run it , it will install the codec . (do that only if you can not read the video!)
Then you should be able to see the video.

I feel dumb, because this FE is supposed to be easy to install, yet I can't get it to work. I downloaded and ran the installer, but now when I try to run the FE I get an error message saying that it can not find the scripting engine. Any Ideas what I am doing wrong?
Any help would be great.
Thanks,
Brian

I guess you are under windows 98 and you don't have the windows scripting host installed.
Look on my download page, you can download a version from here. Install it , then run Atomic.
-
I will try to install that, however I am on XP so I guess that means it should already be there. Either way I'll try that when I get home from work today. Your FE looks really nice in action on all the vids, so I would like to give it a try.
thanks,
Brian

Do you use a XP Lite , or something like that????
-
XP as installed by Gateway on my laptop. Nothing else seems to be light about it. As I said, I will try the downloading it from your site tonight when I get home. I will also try it on my desktop machine to see if that works. I'm starting to hate my machines behavior a little lately, I have had several problems installing Johnny5 too. Not the same problems though, so I don't think they are related. If you think there may be some overlap in the causes of my problems check out the thread titled "johnny5 help" it is on the 1st page of the main section of this forum.
Thanks,
Brian

I would recommend (re)installing Service Pack 2. It should fix some of the weird issues you are experiencing...
-
I could give SP2 a shot. If I reinstall that it's not going to roll-back any updates that have happened since then is it?
-
Nope - you'll be fine. I have done just this thing successfully in the past...

Try to open a command prompt or a dos box from your xp and type :
cscript
then Enter Key
If you obtain help on cscript command the scripting should be already installed. If you have an error ,it means it is not here.

Mixed news on my attempts at making this work.
When I test my laptop for the scripting engine... it works, but still no AtomicFE, Same error.
However, my desktop machine does work with Atomic, and I think I like it. There are some odd things that I am not sure about. When I start the program it either lags a while or waits for a keystroke or something, whenever I try to wait it out I give up and hit Ctrl+Alt and before I can add Delete it starts to show me that it's working. I needed to play around with the configuration a little bit because after running the plug and play install I decided that I didn't want to move all my roms. The interface for setting this software up is nice. I am used to having to deal with bunches of confusing setup with some independantly-developed software and that is not the case here.
I am still going to try to fix-up my laptop and get this working, but either way I must commend you on a nice FE. I was leaning tword another popular one, but I like your setup and options better, and I haven't found any features that I would miss in your software.
Thanks, and hopefully I can get this to work on my laptop. (actually... hopefully I can get a cabinet built and get this to work on my dedicated emulation machine.)
Later,
Brian

Hey what kind of Gateway laptop do you have? I just got a CX210X. I love it. I use Atomic but have not tried it on my laptop yet, so I'll give it a go and let you know how it goes.
-
My laptop is 2 years old and in spite of being slighty worn visually it still works great. I am obviously having some trouble getting this to work with it, I can probably blame myself for that, I've put so much random stuff on this computer with very little extensive cleanup that I am sure the registry and every other little bit of the os is clogged and confused. The processor is having a bit of a tough time with games like Killer Instinct and Fighting Layer, but I get the impression that those type of games take some substantial horsepower. They run on my machine, but the audio stutters and I think that they are running slow.
Sorry for the hijack, you can have your thread back now.
Later,
Brian

If the SP2 re-load doesn't work, Microsoft recommends doing an in-place upgrade to fix scripting engine problems:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315341/ (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315341/)
Good luck!

humm..Strange, could you do that test .
Disable all plug'n play modules you installed using plugnplayManager.exe .
Open the file Atomic019.cfg with the notepad.
Find the line :
WINDOWMODE=NO change it to WINDOWMODE=YES
Save and quit
Change the color depth of your windows Desktop to 65535 color (16bit/pixel) using windows control panel, Display properties.
Run Atomic.exe
Atomic will run in a window. and may be you will see somewhere a message box, or something that could help to understand what happens. Look in the task manager what happens too. The process list... or something...
