Title: my home town observes a little known anniversary today
Post by: danny_galaga on February 19, 2007, 04:35:27 am
after pearl harbour, the japanese had a shot at us too. not even that many australians know about it:

there were actually more bombs dropped on my town than pearl harbour that day! and then the raids went on for about 20 months! darwin was fairly remote at that time so the government of the day didnt defend it very well. one of the ships sunk that day was the USS Peary. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Peary_(DD-226)

as an aside, i actually drove a car for the first time on an old WWII airstrip. popular thing for dads to do with their kids when i was a lad (",)

I was in Darwin a few years ago and I was amazed to find out that it was bombed so badly.

Your link doesn't work for me btw. I got this one: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Peary_%28DD-226%29

Mike Reagan was talking about Darwin tonight. He didn't bring that up though. I thought about calling him and letting him in my new found knowledge.
