Title: Stupid question regarding MAME Roms
Post by: Fritzy on February 14, 2007, 06:21:46 pm
I apologize if this has been answered before but i couldnt figure out a good search term to find the answer for this.  What does it mean when the Roms have sets?

For example the game Zero Point in for mame in Mala has Set 1 and Set 2?  Do both names have to show in my gamelist or can i just show Set 2 and use it to load the game? Or do i have to load the game from Set 1?  Or is it just another way of stating Version 1 and Version 2 and i can just erase the Version 1 Rom?

Sorry about this question guys.  Finally getting around to building my first cabinet after finally completing my jukebox (god, i love salmonking and SKJukebox).  I will try not to flood you guys with too many newb questions.

Thanks for any help.

Fritzy

Don't mean to derail this thread, but can anyone tell me where a good location for the "O" and "K" buttons on my control panel would be?  I can't play half of the games right now.

I heard through the grape vine that the wiki is a wonderful place to find answers to Mame's most difficult questions................... ;)
http://wiki.arcadecontrols.com/wiki/Main_Page (http://wiki.arcadecontrols.com/wiki/Main_Page)

and if that doesn't answer your question, you could always try wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MAME (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MAME)

Or Google:
www.google.com (http://www.google.com)

Nevermind the smartass comment above...except for the links which have a ton of info in them...

The different sets are different dumps of the same game.  Some are identical aside from perhaps the name of the "manufacturer",  some have their difficulty tweaked a little, etc.

Basically if you want to eliminate all the different sets,  create a gamelist with the CLONES removed.   You can do this a number of different ways,  in MALA you can create a gamelist minus clones in the gamelist editor I do believe (I am new with MALA so please forgive me).

You don't need them, I assume you're talking about the first screen to many games talking about copyright and type OK to continue. You can also just move the joystick left then right, or right then left. Just read the screen, it tells you.

It would be a shame if beginners were scared away from this hobby because of jerkwad comments like this one.

i can just erase the Version 1 Rom?
**DO NOT ERASE VERSION 1 OF ANY ROM**
I've found that the version 2 rom often only includes the files that have changed since version 1, counting on the v1 rom to provide the unchanged files, probably to keep file sizes down.

Oh please. If this scares them away they never stood a chance to begin with.

Fritzy -- welcome.

Please do read the links that McCoy provided, also:

http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=19049.0

Much of what you want to know (including the answer to McCoy's 'O' 'K' question) is addressed in the MAME FAQ:

http://www.mame.net/mamefaq.html

and in the MAME wiki (as provided by McCoy):

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MAME#ROM_images

There is a lot of information already on tap and, as you can see, you won't always get the right answer from folks on the boards ...

Cheers

Hehe, i do admit it was a stupid question.  I did try searching through the boards and through google but i just didnt come up with the proper phrasing of the question in order to get the answer.  As for wikepedia, i just keep forgetting about that damn site.  After looking at it, it did give me some answers.

Thank ya all for giving me some answers and for pointing me in the right directions.  Just wanted to ask before i started cleaning my gamelists.  Didnt want to delete something off the game list then have to refresh the whole thing and start the cleaning process from scratch again.

Now I gotta get back to the project so I can come up with my next question to bother people with.

How does that answer my question?  Can't questions be taken seriously around here? :dunno

I must be stupid cause I don't really understand how that's a "jerkwad" comment. I would see it more of ignorance in thinking that "o" and "k" should be added on the control panel though. Someone explain to me what I am not getting...  :dunno

I don't know, that's why I'm asking.  Of course, I don't know why you or any of the others who didn't offer an answer are in this thread either, but to each their own.
