Title: daphne games
Post by: langdoguk on February 12, 2007, 05:59:07 pm
Hi there , I've been reading about Daphne games for some time now so I got the rom set this week , started it up and the intro's are amazing but the actual games seem to be jumpy and hard to make out if I'm actually playing them or not , maybe just very hard to control as I've never played them before.  :dunno
I've only heard good things about them , am I missing something ?
Daphne lovers I really don't mean to offend , just wondering what you guy's think.

This should be in the root of the software forum. It's been over a month since someone posted in Game Review, so I don't think you'll get a response from the people who know what their talking about.

I tried to install it once, this was years ago, the set up seemed painful and there weren't any good tutorials or how to's, so I gave up.

Now that you got me thinking about it again I'll try to install it this weekend.

The only advice I can give you, is do what I plan on doing:

Try a Google with Daphne emulators and whatever game you want to play.  By now it's got to be easier and they may have some useful tutorials.

Good luck.

Just use a good frontend like Atomic with their add-ons very easy to use

Doubt it.  Can't link to roms or burners.

...the actual games seem to be jumpy and hard to make out if I'm actually playing them or not , maybe just very hard to control as I've never played them before.

Since you stated you've never played them, let me explain the Daphne games:  They are emulating arcade laserdisc video games.   Think of them as fancy DVD menus (actually, the DVD-Video versions of Dragon's Lair, Space Ace, et. al. are essentially that).  These games use video footage and you have to move the joystick a certain way (or press the correct key in the case of keyboard) at the right time for the "video" to play to the "success" part.  If you miss (or do nothing), the video jumps to (in the case of Dragon's Lair) Dirk's grisly demise.

You're not actively controlling the protagonist - just making decisions.   And yes, it will be jumpy because the "disc" (or image) is being accessed at different points - it's not a linear viewing of the footage.

They are simple, but they can be fun.  Enjoy!

I've recently gone through an ordeal to get Dragon's Lair going so I may be able to assist.

To install Daphne, get UncleT's guide and download the files he says, even if you don't set up your directory structure the same way he does. One thing I found out is, when you have installed daphne, make sure you then update it to the latest version of daphneloader.

After that, for each game, set up daphneloader with the correct rom info, and launch / relaunch each game, several times or more, each time tweaking the settings for the gameplay, delays etc until you are satisfied with how each game plays. When you are happy, find the daphneloader feature that allows you to copy the command line settings etc that you used when you launched it. Copy this into a bat file like UncleT says. I found for Dragon's Lair, my final settings used many more flags than what UncleT's guide had, but how unique it is for my particular setup / preferences, I don't know... play around until YOU are satisfied, is my suggestion.

After you have each game tweaked / called from a batch file, then look on here for another thread which discusses how to add daphne games into your main games list in MaLa, should you want to do that. If you don't want, or don't use MaLa, then ignore this bit...

I should mention that I've also recently procurred the full daphne romset but so far haven't had time to do anything other that copy the discs onto my hard drive. But I can't imagine the process will change radically from game to game...

Good luck.

Guess again - that link comes up from time to time in the Google ads...

I thought he was referring to a thread.  I admit that I pay little to no attention to the Google Ads and often forget they're there.

And now I'm confused about something else.  The replies on this thread seem to deal with setting up Daphne but I was under the impression that he got it working but wasn't familiar with the gameplay

and I explained that it was normal.   If I misread your issue (i.e.: can't get it to run properly instead of not being familiar with its quirks), then ignore everything I had previously said.

I'm actually pretty good with the daphne emu, and the laserdisc games... I'm also a long time member on the daphne forums... If u still need further help, PM me, and I'll help u get it straightened out...

One thing I will warn you about... DO NOT go to the daphne forums and ask for help on this matter... They do not approve of people who get the images from burners, or illegally... That is one thing you will definately get flamed for over there... lol

Anyway, let me know if you still need help...

Uh oh... Is the avatar in violation of some sort? I'll take it down if it is...

Any way, with daphne, especially the older versions (0.99.7) it's all about pointing the emulator to the framefile, and the mpeg... The rest is pretty much personal prefrence... And I've found it works a lot better if you don't use video hardware acceleration... You can turn it off under the "Video" tab in 1.0, and under the "Advanced" tab in 0.99.7

Hi there , I've just noticed this thread has resurfaced ( was lost in the game review forum), I did get them going but didn't really know how to play them (my fault not the games  :dunno), done a little youtube search and watched someone playing them , made it a lot clearer as to what I was doing wrong , pretty much as you said 'DaveMMR '
