Maybe. Turns out, there is a whole genre of shmups that are like this - it's called "bullet hell (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bullet_hell)". It doesn't matter if any part of you gets hit except for the one pixel in the middle of your ship. I guess it's not as hard as it looks.

I still find the whole concept to be ridiculous.

A lot of shooters like that also have state based damage - you can only be damaged by certain types of fire depending on the attributes of your ship.  So for much of that fight there could easily be a lot of that ammo that is only noise and not actually needing to be avoided.  It looks nastier than it is.

Ikaruga is a great example of this.  While your ship is white, you absorb white bullets, and can only be harmed by black, and vice-versa.  There is a level score you can achieve if you do not fire a single shot, surviving only by absorbing bullets, called "Dot Eater"   See this for an example (http://youtube.com/watch?v=LtIDc04e79M)

Ikaruga is exactly the game I was thinking of when I wrote that.  Ikaruga is a ---smurfing--- incredible game on the Dreamcast.

Look into Imperishable Night and Perfect Cherry Blossom also, you can find the demos free on the Internet but you have to buy the full versions from import places or ebay cuz it is a doujin (independant) game made in Japan I think by a company called Shrine Maiden. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Curtain shooters or "bullet hell" games are really fascinating. Instead of tons of enemies like Galaga or 1942 used to do, the focus is on fewer enemies who shoot screen loads of bullets.

Most of these types of games give you points/powerup bonuses for rubbing against bullets without getting hit in the core and dying. And in games like Imperishable Night, the game has a meter at the bottom of boss fights telling you where the boss is so you can always be under them and shooting at them while staring at the bottom screen bullet patterns.

Games like these and DonPachi, DoDonPachi,  (available in MAME)  are so freaking rewarding - an easy game gets old fast but these take years to get good at.

I would love to make a shooter bartop like this.  Love love love.  I need to learn to make cabinets.

I can build controls... I can rebuild games from the ground up... power supplies, game PCBs, monitors... pinball machines too...

...but, no, I'm not much of a carpenter.

Maybe I should find Build Your Own Arcade Cabinet?

All it takes it the right tools, dedication, and patience and anyone can build a cabinet, especially with a community like this to back you up (with plans, tips, etc.).  It might take ten times longer than it would take an experience carpenter, but . . .

That's what I figure.  I'm going to build a bartop or two in the spring, probably, but it will be my first carpentry attempt more complex than furniture repair or replacing a screen door, etc.

Well, that's not entirely true.  I tried to build a box spring platform for my son.  We can't fit a full sized box spring up the stairs.  I built what I thought was a pretty sturdy platform from 2x4s and 1/2" ply... then later when I went to move it it fell apart because half the screws came out.  Wrong screws, I suppose, they didn't bite hard enough.

I need a green mushroom, because I have just been 1-up'd! Good job.

Insane....I guess with the "dot eater" games,  you can control the color of your shield?

And Chad....a bartop is a great project to learn to BUILD cabinets with...that is what I am going to do (well,  that or a hanging wall jukebox).

The only game I know of like that is Ikaruga and yes you can change your ships color (polarity) from white to black to absorb one color of bullets. I don't know of any other commercial games that do that, most curtain shooters just have you scrape and dodge insane amounts of bullets with no real protections except having a small hit box (the point on your ship that registers when you are hit).

...too bad in real life the size of the "hit box" on my truck actually encompasses the entire vehicle...damn it already!

While I am glad that this game is getting more exposure so that the overall price of it will hopefully go down a bit and so that more people can afford it, this just seems like one more case of "bought it already? buy it again!" like Nintendo has been doing an aweful lot of.

I do wish Radiant Silvergun would get that sort of attention so I could afford it though...

And in similar news, I remember reading a long time ago that the shooter Shikigami No Shiro II (Castle of Shikigami) which costs something like $70 on Dreamcast can be had for somewhere around $10 for the Gamecube.
