Hey everyone. I just picked up the wood for my cabinet. I've already got all my happs stuff and I made a run to Home Depot yesterday and picked up the majority of what I'll need. Construction begins tomorrow ;D.
I thought I'd pass on some funny (and sucky) things about the wood I got.
1- Black melamine costs about twice as much as white melamine!!! My 4'x8' sheets of 3/4" black melamine cost about $38 apiece! The kid who gave them to me when I picked them up said that the white ones are about $20. I wouldn't be surprised if he's thinking of 1/2" or 5/8", but still, the black is much more expensive.
2- The sheets of melamine weighed in at.....here it comes.....get ready.............................95 Lbs. Each ! ! ! Sheesh. My cab is going to be a monster. The 27" TV is probably pretty close to that same weight. This thing's going to weigh 500 pounds by the time I'm finished. Thank god for dollies. It's going to have to go up a full flight of stairs to get into my apartment when it's finished. I bought one of those ratchet-tightening straps that people use to secure boats to trailers to make sure the thing will stay on the dolly in transport.
Anyway...I'm damned excited! It's been a long time coming. A couple of months from now I'm hoping to say, "voila!" and post some pictures.

Colored melamines are more because they are a niche product. Much lower volume than white. Laws of supply and demand produce higher prices for lower demand products.
I can buy 3/4" white melamine for ~$24 /sheet, black is ~$29 /sheet. 5/8" white is under $19 /sheet. The 5/8" white is not necessarily cheaper because it's thinner, it's cheaper because there is tons of it sold, very high demand for it in the kitchen cabinet industry. We get huge volume discounts.
(all prices canadian, I'm a cabinetmaker in Canada)
