Title: WiiOS - Possible to turn into working cabinet front end using Wii remote?
Post by: Dazz on February 05, 2007, 12:33:53 pm
I just come across this on Wiili site.   http://www.wiili.org/index.php/Wii_os.  The video is running the Glovepie script that converts Wii remote movements into PC instructions.

Anyone else think something like that would make a pretty cool cabinet front end?

I am confused, can you actually play Wii games with this or is just made to look like it.  I downloaded the file but I am at work so I can't test it.  I need more info.

No, it does not allow you to play Wii games on the PC.  The screen is just a mock up made to look like the Wii.  Using the Glovepie scripts and a Wii remote hooked up to the PC via Bluetooth you can navigate using the Wii remote.  Evidently when clicked each game will launch the correct emulator.  Basically it's doing the same thing that a full blown front end is used for...  just using a Wii remote to navigate the menus.

Honestly, I don't think it would be too beneficial as a front end...  Perhaps it would be just a novelty, but something different.  Might be nice to have all of your possible emulators on the screen and using the Wii remote to select which one you want to play.  Once inside the emulator perhaps have it list games via a screenshot, which also is selectable using the remote, then it launches that game.

dam, I thought that was the case.  It would be great if you could emulate the Wii

Dazz, short answer no.

Long answer... if you want your cabient to act like a wii, then yes.  Bluetooth devices only connect after startup, so you can't boot up a computer with them.  However, bluetooth devices can be set to take a pc out of sleep mode, so if you want to pc to only go to sleep (and thus always be on, like the wii) then yes you could rigg a wiimote up to do that.

With that being said, the wiios looks like something a first year quick basic student would whip up.  The screenshots don't do it justice, it's far more horrible and unimpressive once you run it.  :(

I think the wii interface would make a great console front-end, but somebody would have to build a better simulation than the wiios app.
