This happened like two weeks ago?!?  How did I miss that?!?

Guy was damn fast and agile for a huge guy.  I enjoyed watching his matches.

RIP, big man.

I didn't know Mr. Perfect had died until I heard Randy Savage's tribute song on college radio.  What a crappy way to learn about someones death.

Boss Man Died a couple of years ago, too.

Other recent notables (last 5 years):

Earthquake
Eddie Guerrero
Public Enemy (both of them)
Chris Candido
Hercules
Crash Holly
Road Warrior Hawk
Miss Elizabeth
Mr. Perfect
The British Bulldog

All but Earthquake (cancer) were steroid/drug related.

Wow, I never realized we lost so many wrestling stars.  How come I never heard about any of these (other than Eddie Guerrero + Mr. Perfect).  Granted I dont watch nearly the amount of wrestling that I used to, but you would still think that it would at least make the back page of the newspaper  :-\

Not exactly.... the British Bulldog died from complications from a back infection.  He was on pain medication because of it, but I wouldn't call that a drug-related death.

Hawk died because of drugs he had done years prior weakening his heart.  It wasn't like he o-d and died of it at the time of his death.

I met bam bam once.... seemed like a decent guy.  I'll miss him.

Ya, that is what I meant really with the drugs/steroid thing. Crash Holly and Ms. Elizabeth were the only OD's I think.

Oh and Chris Candido died from a blod clot that made it's way to his heart after a broken leg.

A massively weakened coke damaged heart.  A healthy person probaly wouldn't have died from what happened to Candido.  That dude was in and out of rehab like he worked there.  So was his wife Sunny.

A lot of those causes of deaths for wrestlers are wrong.

Rude, for example, died of a GHB overdose.
Title: Re: Bam Bam Bigelow dead
Post by: billf on February 12, 2007, 10:34:13 am
Read the actual wiki entry for each for more details about their deaths.  For Rude it actually says:

"Rude died on April 20, 1999 after suffering heart failure. His believed cause of death may have been an overdose of Gamma-Hydroxybutyric acid (GHB) and steroids. An autopsy report showed he died from an overdose of "mixed medications".

Wikipedia is made up of individual pages, though, that are only related by the links among them.  The wrestlers' death page is a work unto itself and shouldn't have incorrect info.  That's about as far as I care about it, though, so  :dunno
Title: Re: Bam Bam Bigelow dead
Post by: billf on February 12, 2007, 11:05:36 am
What part of the quote from the Rick Rude wiki page is incorrect?  I actually didn't watch wrestling, but did recognize the names that were mentioned above.  So I did a wiki search and came across that info, hence the reason I posted it.  I know wiki isn't the end all and be all of facts, but that entry says he died of heart failure believed to be caused by an overdose of GHB and steroids.
Title: Re: Bam Bam Bigelow dead
Post by: ChadTower on February 12, 2007, 11:08:26 am

I wasn't talking about the Rick Rude page.  I was talking about the page that was actually linked here in this thread, which is a separate page from the Rude page and lists cause of death as "heart failure".  That's like saying someone shot in the head died of "brain failure".

He died of an overdose of GHB, not heart failure.

He had potential.  Having had conversations with a lot of guys who worked with him, they all hated it, as he was clumsy, couldn't remember more than a couple spots in a row, and injured people all the time.  A guy that size would have made a killing working for Vince if he had any usability whatsoever.

My favorite Mike Awesome moment was when he nearly killed that skinny ICP dude bombing him off the school bus... he wasn't supposed to miss.   :laugh2:

I hear he was battling some pretty strong diabetes related depression.  Having recently retired because of injury, possibly having money problems, unable to adjust to life off the road, no one at home... it starts to paint a pretty bleak picture of his outlook at the end.

Shardian,

Hey man,  I have little respect for people who take their own lives.  I am sure there are a number of people he left behind that are destroyed in one way or another because of his selfish decision.

That said,  out of respect for YOU,  I will drop it.   I apologize if I offended YOU in some way,  it was not intentional.

Don't MOST Pro-Wrestlers take steroids? I don't exactly agree with drug use, but pro-wrestling is more performance art than sport. It isn't like they are actually getting any sort of edge, since management decides who wins the match.
Title: Re: Bam Bam Bigelow dead
Post by: ChadTower on March 12, 2007, 08:54:08 am

No, they don't.  MOST pro wrestlers are guys who make $50/night a couple times a week and sleep 3-4 to a motel room.  They couldn't afford steroids if they wanted to take that path.  They're not the 6-4 275 behemoths you see on TV.

Their edge from juice is with management, actually.  Big guys sell seats and get TV ratings.

Well, that was certainly the case in the 80's WWF.  Vince pushed no talant monsters thru the roof.  My favorite of the huge stiffs from that era - The Powers of Pain.  Man, Warlord sucked but I envied that guy's build something major as a 15 year old somewhat skinny kid!  :o

Now, they seem to be focused less on monsters and more on performers.

Not sure if juicing would give you a huge edge in today's wrestling climate.  Sure, you still gotta look at least "in great shape" but not so much "Tony Atlas" buff anymore.

If I remember correctly, the WWF steroids thing went public in the mid-90's. Apparently, Vince McMahon was handing them out like candy. When Hulk Hogan went to WCW, he testified against the WWF.

The Powers of Pain were already multi-time NWA World Tag champs when they got to the WWF.  Vince didn't create them or push them beyond where they already were.

Look at guys like Chris Masters and Bobby Lashley.  Orton just put on about 20lb of muscle in the last two months.  Batista juices regularly.  A LOT of those guys juice just because it's easier on the road to cycle 3 or so times a year than it is to keep that build year round the hard way.  Not every juicer is 4% bodyfat and 280lb.

Sharidan, Vince won every case the gov't brought against him during those trials.  I'm not saying the guys weren't all juiced but they weren't getting it from Vince.  Hell, Vince himself has been a juicer over the years, very obviously.

I used to follow the NWA as well, so I was aware of them there.  Just used them as a prime example of the huge stiffs that were dominating the sport at the time in general.  True, Vince didn't start their particular push.

add Arnold Skaaland to that list...   i only remember him as the manager of bob backland but here is a little artical about him from the wrestling observer...

Arnold Skaaland passes away

by Dave Meltzer

Arnold Skaaland, a fixture on the Northeast wrestling scene dating back to the 1940s, passed away yesterday at the age of 82.

A former part owner of Capital Wrestling Corporation, the parent company of the World Wide Wrestling Federation, Skaaland's public persona during the 70s was as the long-time prelim wrestler who was the public manager of champions Bruno Sammartino and later Bob Backlund. He was also the regular heel manager for Andre the Giant for New Japan Pro Wrestling, where he served the role as Andre's caretaker and Vince McMahon Sr.'s business representative, since McMahon Sr. was Andre's booker.

He promoted wrestling in White Plains and worked the box office and was in charge of taking the receipts from the shows and depositing them during the 60s and 70s, among his other jobs. That job shows the level of trust the other owners would have had in him in such a cut-throat business. We remained working behind the scenes with the company up to the present time.

Yeah, I only remember him as Backlund's manager.  I can't picture him as a heel manager.

On a related note, I met Backlund once - he lived literally next door my aunt in a condo in Glastonbury, CT briefly while his home was being built.  I was like 13 at the time.  Big thrill.  Nice as could be.

He flew home yesterday because of a "family emergency", today he and his family are dead.  I'm thinking he flew home to protect his family and it didn't go so well.
