I'm really just curious, what's the point of having more than 8? Maybe this is for newer games, or maybe these respond better. I really have no idea. I know there are some out there and the 360 joysticks that are mega pricey, so I'm just curious.
-
I think they're just for a few games that used 49-way, like Sinistar. It just provides more precision, since it has so many extra points. Other than that, I don't know why else you'd want one.
Now, the Ultrastik 360 (http://www.ultimarc.com/ultrastik_info.html) sounds very cool. Very pricey, but I may have to break down and buy a couple after I've had some cab/CP building experience. Those you can program to act like any other type of joystick and even set custom behavior. There's a good review of it on RetroBlast (http://www.retroblast.com/reviews/Ultimarc_Ultrastick_0925006-01.html).

Sinstar!
Plus having the auto DRS so it will make the joystick a vert 2 way, hoz 2 way, 4 way, diag 4 way, 8 way, 49 way all in 1 joystick. It is a great solution to Frankenpanels. 2 joys and you got it all. I will just say... I love my 49 ways.

Does this joystick work as an analog for N64 emulators? Anyone tried it yet?
-
I have. It seems to work fine in analog mode for N64.
-
i would assume the same rings true for other analog emulators like ps1 for example.
-
Don't forget that on top of the 49-way's digital restriction modes (the first stick ever to be offered with such capability, BTW) there is also the feel that very closely resembles the classic WICO balltop sticks. The Midway 49-ways used a rubber grommet centering device, so the feel is like no other stick currently on the market. But you might wish to stay clear of the HAPP variety unless the grommet has been replaced.
A stick has to feel good in your hand before you worry about what else it can do, and the 49-ways are, IMHO, unmatched in this regard.

I built a swappable control panel with a 49-way just to play Sinistar...

hmmm, I've never play sinistar. Maybe I better stay away from it so I won't have to go buying new 49 way joysticks...

You guys are really making me want to check this game out...
One Joystick and two buttons (fire, bomb). Simple game where you and your enemies are mining crystals from asteroids. Two enemy ship types, miners and fighters then there is Sinistar. You make bombs with the crystals and the miners make Sinistar. You use the bombs to kill Sinistar to go to the next level.
The 49-way joystick gives you fine directional and thrust control over your ship. You can play it with an 8 way but it is more difficult because your thrusters are only on and off and only 8 directions instead of 25 (if my calculations are correct).

My wife just didn't understand why I celebrated when I beat the first level on the crappy midway cab that sells in target.

My two cents. (the price of a 49way is worth iot to play Sinistar) Awsome game! :soapbox:
