Title: Mini or Tabletop, Bar top, whatever
Post by: IG-88 on April 04, 2003, 12:44:51 am
I've been trying over the last several weeks to find some good examples of these types of machines. I've gone through the whole list of examples from the other part of the site, (and gotten a couple) so I thought maybe I could ask for links from people to help out also. If I could get a good design down, I'm thinking about donating a couple to local youth house. I have a pal  ;) that can help me out in the hardware dept. I just need something to start with. Anyways it just an idea.  :)

Here's another:
http://www.geocities.com/emu_skeleton/minimame.htm (http://www.geocities.com/emu_skeleton/minimame.htm)

There is also someone selling these kind of MAME cabs, but I can't remember the name of it.  Anyone else seen these for sale.  I remeber the site had a lot of good pictures.  I'll see if I can find it again.

Better include this link then:http://www.creepfactory.com/tablecade/mainline.htm (http://www.creepfactory.com/tablecade/mainline.htm)

As the main page you gave there doesn't work anymore.

I thought this one: http://members.rogers.com/sschwartz2000/forsale.html  looked really good.

He's actually the guy that directed me to this site.  :)

Hi all this is james from Tablecade.com, the site is down because I charged too little and actually ended up paying MORE than the $450.00 each in parts time and labor. Tablecade will be back, but at a higher price OR just for fun and sharing ideas with everyone, in fact even posting all my plans, kinda go public domain, but I will see. people loved them but I got behind because it actually takes MORE effort to cram a pc into one, etc. I still have two to finish, actually one is done and another half done, I did a ms pac man for a guy and he didnt know what he was doing/never built or added to his pc in his life, so of course it got to him broke from shipping I had to replace the motherboard, the monitor, hd etc. and the bastard never sent them back broke, so I am sure he lier. just a nightmare, took what I love to do and made it HELL, trust me, any one thinking of making some extra cash building and selling cabinets, mini or full, DON'T! It isn't worth it, bigger companies like Hanaho can do it cheap, you can't, trust me. It almost ruined my love for building cabs so I cut it off to bring it back later but probably for fun. I am sorry people were mad that they didn't get thiers, but I refunded six and have just two left to make good on, one guy sent his lawyer on me but whe I said it is ready to ship he never responed! So I have one tablecade finished but I wont send it to him untill he replies, so if he doesnt I guess I have a tablecade for sale DX (no pc inside) for like $500.00

CreepFactory: I know your pain, I've gone through similiar situations selling my cabinets. How did you ship? I used UPS once because the buyer insisted on shipping it to his office in Manhattan. Suffice it to say it arrived in pieces. I only ship by Forward Air now and have never had a problem. Forward Air is cheap as well, basically $85 dollars to anywhere they have a terminal.

My slightly updated website with better pics:

Thanks to all of you for posting....I'm in the middle of moving now, need to get my basement setup, have a Mame Driving cab planned, a Jukebox planned, but REALLY want to build a bartop/mini cab.

I was hoping Saint would create a new examples section just for this category, maybe I'll start a poll......

Thanks again, this info helps....

Sheesh. $762 for a tiny empty cabinet with no monitor or computer included?

For a youth center.

A cocktail table might be good.  Or a cocktail in a bar might (make sure it's at the end so you have vertical and horizontal).

Why not a full standup?  The wood cost should be about the same, but you don't have to worry about the other parts / space.

Also, you might want to find out what games the kids want to play.  If its fighting games, then you probably want to do a full size standup.

That's a "rude" way to win some money! :P

And probably it has advance mame and roms inside (they actually are FREE)  ;D ;D

I think you are assuming what software is included.   It sounds like nothing is supplied that way you are on your own for software support and the cabinet it nice and legal.

Sorry but i have to say that only a blind folk buys that product...

It's a shame that they're still some people with a lot of nerve to make such an offer...

I am not sure what you mean by blind.  Is it not good looking or do you mean they do not know?

If someone can sell a cabinet to the market for whatever price they find profitable I do not find it a shame.  It gives people who do not have the skill or time a way of getting a cabinet built.

I do not know why some people jump in and criticize anyone who wants to build a cabinet and make a profit.  You do not have to buy what is offered you can make your own if you desire.

I like the work that goes into designing a saleable cabinet because I can use the ideas to build my own.   It is a nice looking little cab.

Well captain of free speech... there's also such a concept of "free markets" and capitalism, etc... I can bring whatever i'd like to market (well within safety guidelines/reason) and charge whatever i'd like.  But I'll only get that price if someone is willing to pay that price I set.

If I can't get enough buyers to justify my overhead, I'd have to (hypothetically) rethink my business plan, or find way's to lower my price... (i.e. sell more at a lower price --> economy of scale, or sell fewer at a higher profit margin --> more of a boutique business model)

*shrug* For someone who is always mouthing off free speech this and censorship that... you're awfully under-informed and narrow minded.  Are you funneling everything through the teenage angst filter?

As BobA and others, I don't see the problem with them selling this very cute cabinet...PLUS it goes further than you could do, if you were to make your own:
it would be overpriced to manufacture 1 steel control panel (not to speak of covering it with this Lexan layout..)...and the design is so perfect !

This hobby - that we like so much - is a matter of passion...and I think that this cabinet is exactly the kind of stuff you won't buy by reason..but by passion.

I personaly am inquiring if they can ship to Europe (as I reside there ;-)
I will for sure find a place to put it at home ;-)

I think we can all agree the thing is overpriced and I feel sorry for the person who would buy it because it's probably not an informed decision on their part, but if that is the case then more power to them.

Not so sure !

$ 1100 the cab without (contrary to this $ 620 Lunacade) light and marquee, sound system, metal control panel with joystick and buttons, interface...

I feel by comparison that this is a correct price !

I think I see the way these things develop..

Person A builds themselves a MAME Cab.....they say "gee, that wasn't so bad......".

Person A then builds another..for his "friend"....it takes him less time than his first-effort, and he says "hey this is getting easy, and I didn't waste as much $$ on not-needed parts" etc.

Person A then gets the 'bright idea' that they can build these things and SELL THEM!

Person A...gets greedy.  They factor in material cost...and then calculate that their time building them is worth $40 an hour and...next thing you know, you've got $800 bartops and $1200 empty cabinets.

The problem with this is simple: ITS A PAIN IN THE ASS TO MAKE FURNITURE.  Thats why you pay $1000 for a couch at the local furniture store thats built on an assembly line.  If you want a hand made quality couch, you pay $4000.00 for it.    Thats why you dont see too many people selling these things at reasonable prices..because unless this is your 24/7 living, the more time you spend (Free time, mind you) making these, the more you want to up the price..etc..etc..

Eventually you give up, get frustrated, and stop making them.
