These are 1280x1024 downscaled for forum friendliness.
I'm kinda running out of ideas where to take this; perhaps I've been fiddling with it too long. Suggestions please!
-
nice job, schock. i like the atari 2600 one.
With the Mame one, does the marquee change as well?
-
Looks nice, not as nice as the apple one though :)
-

Yep, and the cpanel and video/snap. And the cartridge on the Atari, too, since I found a nice big .rar of those :)
Another option is sort of like this:
-
I've said it once and I'll say it again
"I love your work, It's simple yet sexy"
A lot of layouts produced are too 'Busy' for my taste
Sometimes 'less is more'
IMHO
-
Sometimes 'less is more'
:applaud:
-
I have to 3rd that notion of less is more. And here is a free Photoshop tip: Avoid using filters as much as you can (including Filter->Render->Clouds). Photoshop filters almost always look bad for backgrounds. Your better off finding a nice image and alpha blending it bit with a pure black background or something. Or finding some sort of pattern from a photograph or 3d rendered image for the background. Your last white theme would also look good in a black variety, it's simple and effective. Keep up the good work!

Yeah, I think the clouds is letting it down quite a lot! Other than offset and gaussian blur (which are indespensible sometimes) I baulk at filters too - especially as wallpaper. Cheers for the focus.

I like this one better than the other ones on here. Almost looks like the Apple one you made, simple and sexy. Is the Apple one done??
-
Congrats, I really like those :applaud:
-
...at the risk of pushing it
Would you consider doing a couple of vertical layouts too? ;D
-

Have patience ;)
I won't be able to distribute the cloudy ones without lots of revision. There's too much IP buried in there - thank you Google Images >:D
The white ones maybe so - but generating layouts for public consumption is not my core focus right now. The Applesque ones in the other thread were mainly an exercise for me to play and see whether or not I actually knew how to do it :)
That said, I'm generally happy to share with others what I do for myself, as long as the packaging and maintenance is easy and won't leave me open to legal liability or too many groupies
-
Okay, okay stop the presses. Has anyone seen the NES, SNES, Gameboy, SMS, Genesis mala layouts here? I'm only seeing mame, C64, Atari 2600, Visual Pinball ;)
You can't just stop there. You gotta finish the collection. Horizontal, vertical etc.
I love your first set. Can you tell? :applaud:
-

I was doing this one for me, and haven't really got any plans to do emulators/machines I don't actually plan to run... I don't even know what most of them look like :dunno ;D The hard part about those first ones is finding nice clean images of the controllers and doing all that fiddly ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---. Perhaps that's why I'm leaning back towards that white-ish one, or even the black thing I did in another thread for squirrellydw.
Cheers anyway though for the kind words of encouragement
-
did someone mention they have a file/files with Mame marquee images? I've been looking for these but can't find them on the net (and I'd love to use them within MaLa layout). If you have these and would be willing to share I'd be very appreciative.
Also, love the appleque layouts.
-
nevermind, I'm an idiot - I just noticed Howard's sticky post about marquees!
-
Starting to combine cleanest bits of both - but being mindful of "clean and simple". Obviously this is WIP - look at that horrible stroke on the reflected text! :)
Also experimenting with squares rather than rectangles, to keep vertical/horizontal exactly the same.
-
Getting there...
-
looking sweet, any chance of a 1280 x 720 version? I use mala on a hdtv in the living room
-
Looks nice, I like it
-

joebells I might be able to swing something for you - what are you after?
-
nice job, shock! i like the crispness of it. any chance of doing a low-res version for arcade monitor resolutions? 640x280 (or is it 288)?
-
How does that work? Is it really 640 x 576 interlaced, or do you literally do a 640x288 layout that looks all squished and let the monitor sort it out, or what? A bit like those boot screens for Win98 where they had to be 320x400 but would display at 320x200 ("It is now safe to turn off your computer" etc)
-
On my Golden Tee, with an ArcadeVGA graphics card and standard resolution monitor, I run windows at 640x288. That looks the best since it is not interlaced/jumpy.
It is running native at that resolution.
-
I'm thinking there might be too much detail in this skin I'm working on to scale down that far; I'm planning on running MaLa in 1280x1024. But I guess it could be adapted or something.
Anyways - here's the latest WIP.
-

Well I run it on my widescreen so all these look stretched on my tv. But it probably would be a pain to relayout all the stuff and make a custom one for probably just 1 person so don't worry about it maybe i'll just copy it when its done. I copied/modified the retro one and its been a bit of a pain but has come out ok so far but I think I want something more like this. Is that the tree you are using there? I started to play with it but didn't have enough time to figure out quite how it works yet. Maybe I'll use your themes config files as a reference since I haven't seen a theme with tree used yet.
Like the way the theme looks its coming along nicely.
-
1280x720, right? I'll try and have a look at recomposing in that ratio - might work out after all. I'm planning to use the Mr Do cabinet images (http://www.mameworld.net/mrdo/mame_cabinets.html) since they're so big and beautiful - as you can see from that last screenshot. There could be a way of working that into all that width you've got there somehow. I can't promise anything but I will look into it :) I had a quick play with a 1280x720 variant after you originally posted, and it turned out crap - but most new designs suck until you sleep on them for a week or so and then work some more.
My desktop machine runs in 16:10 so a widescreen skin would be sort of handy for me anyway. I can imagine a few others in the same boat, even if cabs are generally 4:3.
Regards the tree thing - I'm not sure if I'll use Tree. I have played with it a little. Was thinking the tree views of this skin would basically be that side menu centred and bigger, with the icons larger too - then when you drill down into a specific emulator, the screen shown replaces that view and you can choose a ROM. So basically, stealing horribly from this (http://mala.arcadezentrum.com/malatree.html) concept.
The thing with trees though is that they are a pain to set up (lots of screens to render), and you have to move up and down them to change your emulator. Without a tree, you can just map a button or stick to swap the emulator. Trees are certainly more user/newbie friendly though so I'd consider them for a cab you want to leave unattended. Personal preference really.
I'm thinking for this one that I'll just map either a "shifted" joystick up/down to change emulators, or buttons 3 and 4 or something. Each emulator then needs its own variant of the skin with the correct "button" highlighted.
-
looks nice, any chance on adding the system icons on the left to the apple theme you made as an option?
-
as long as you don't mind and it'll be of some use to you. But really I don't mind recreating it I learned quite alot recreating the retro theme, it was fun. Would the arcade cabinet be loaded into the skin so it can change if you are playing say snes or is it part of the background?
-

Shouldn't be too hard. But I thought you wanted it clean ? ;)

I know what you mean - it is fun getting in and dirty with this stuff. Would you like my .psd file with all the layers to play with?
The cabinet image is called by MaLa at runtime, like the snaps are - and disappears if there isn't one for the selected ROM. The only thing rendered in the image is the background / window blocks and the left nav menu. So there are as many background images (and therefore variant layouts) required as emulators you need to add in that list. I'm planning 5 at the moment but left room for more.
-
I do but I also like how that looks. Didn't know if you can have it as an option or if you have to make a new one.
Great job
-
Thanks. As usual I can't decide on the colour ;D
Would probably ditch one of the screenshot boxes to make room. I liked how that Atomic version turned out :) I'll also have to up the font size a fair bit so it is readable on your crap resolution monitor >:D
-
I like the Atomic also

Ah see somehow for some reason I thought you had the tree setup so that you could always access those emulator pictures over on the left side like possibly moving your joystick over to the left and then up and down to pick one not sure why I thought that exactly and it is nice being able to either page up by pressing left or going up by letter by going left so thats not even a good idea. I don't know why I thought that.
I've figured out the tree thing now I think. I just didn't know what tree fields matched up with what skin layout fields. But a bit of trial and error and just taking a second to think about what was logical and now I believe I know which is which. I'm not sure if I'm going to use it or not either I guess.
-
Decided that trying to squeeze too many definables into that space was a bad thing.
Trivia: did you know that you can calculate with the golden ratio (http://www.google.com.au/search?q=1024+%2F+golden+ratio&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-GB:official&client=firefox-a) directly in Google? Cool !
-
Shock_ I am starting to hate you :) I like this one a lot also and now I don't know what one to use. I really like the how at the top it tells you what to do, great idea for when friends come over and not sure what to do. Any chance of combining this one and the Apple one? Maybe add the emulators and the "key" to the Apple one??
Great work
-
With the Mame one, does the marquee change as well?
Yep, and the cpanel and video/snap. And the cartridge on the Atari, too, since I found a nice big .rar of those :)
Another option is sort of like this:
this looks very, very nice on a pc-monitor. unfortunatelly its not so good on an arcademonitor bacause the white backgriund flimmers on a 60hz screen. but anyway: good work!
-
yeah it's designed for a PC monitor (specifically, mine - mwa ha ha!)
The instructions are probably different for everyone's specific front end configuration, so that makes it a bit tricky. I don't even know if those instructions are what I'll end up using myself yet!
And the button layout in the help text is specifically what my CP will be like (6-button candy cab config).
All of that makes it a difficult thing to sort out if/when this skin is published for general consumption. I think I'll make it a little more generic when I'm done, and use a modified version for myself with my own controls mapped etc.
And there's still that matter of the 1280x720 thing to sort out for joebells :)
Ta for feedback. Weird how it's starting to resemble the one at the top of this thread again!
-
shock_ I seriously don't mind recreating it in fact I'll enjoy it.
-
Wow, really like the 4A and the 5c ones. Great work!!!
-
Cheers, Tiger-Heli
Any chance of combining this one and the Apple one?
I'll see whether it works or not, but you might just have to choose :)
-
Well this thread is > a month old now and I think I've pushed this about as far as I can without actually having my cab built and all the final button functions decided :)
Here's where I think I'll let it rest for now - and an applesque with the emu menu for good measure. Both are screenshots of the layouts in action under MaLa.
I will package and release at least some of this stuff properly if I can find the time!
-
WOW, nice work
-
Okay one more tiny revision!
If anyone wants to play, here's an alpha release - horizontal and vertical included.
-
That start button in your first theme is pretttyy... did you pull that graphic from somewhere or did you make that yourself?

are they the only emulators you have or can you add more? It would be cool if you could add them all and then some how just pick the ones you wanted to show up. Probably can do it though.
-
Yeah that's the tricky part - and probably a reason why most other multi-emulator skins you see have one indicated per screen and no visible menu, like retroGUI, say.
Everyone is going to have a different set of emulators that they run - and even that will change over time too probably. The set in those screenshots is just what I plan on running. And the same obviously goes for the help instructions too.
What I'm planning to do is prepare the source photoshop file so empty buttons can be added, buttons can be removed, and text/images can be changed. The downside is that to customise for your own needs you need to edit that file. I will provide a flat file as a PNG as well [edit - below], with empty template buttons, so people with any cheap old software that allows selecting sections, copying and pasting, should be able to do one up with the correct emulators to suit them.
There may be a better way but I don't know it yet.
This whole skin (well two, now) was me setting up a custom theme for my own cab so I didn't mind it working differently to how others do. I work in web design, and this is very similar to designing for kiosks, where you can take advantage of everything you know about the end platform. I don't mind sharing the work, but it's still primary a custom job ;)
Since you've been gushing praise at me though, squirrellydw, I'll set something up for you :)
[edit - have attached 2 x 1280x960 below, with clean blank buttons ripe for duplicating, moving, adding labels and whatever]

Great work! I am using mala now and like it a lot. Why does v5d look so different from the applesque one below it?
Encryptor
-
Thanks mate.
"V5" is a just a completely different skin to the applesque one (see applesque thread here (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=62096.0)) - I only cross-posted it here since squirrellydw asked me to combine a feature. I like 'em both - but I'm biased :)
-
Yeah I was following that thread as well. It's very sharp looking! Is "V5" available for download anywhere or is that your own special frontend?
Encryptor
-
I haven't posted it yet but I probably will some day soon - I don't forsee much use for that skin by other people per all the reasons above, but I'm not going to hoard it either :) I'm still not 100% on it but it needs to be put in a drawer for a while or I'll just mess it up. Besides - it needs a snappier name :)
-
I don't like it for what it can do with other emulators. I just think the color scheme looks great and the layout is nice. I'll keep an eye out for it. Thanks.

thanks Shock_, very nice. Now to find time to work on it. Once i have my cocktail cab all done, any chance I could get you to modify the Apple one for me a little? I like the one you are working on for yourself with buttons showing what they do.

I have a question I hope you can answer. In the pic of v5d above. Is that cab pic from the cabinet directory? If so how did you get it to load? I don't see an option to select the cab pics. Their is snap, title, marquee and so on but I don't see an option to show the cab pics.
I see there is things you can define but I can't figure out how to make it show the cab pics. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
Encryptor
-
Yep - it's a definable.
I don't have MaLa in front of me right now to check exactly, but here's what you need.
- Mr Do's cabinet pics (http://www.mameworld.net/mrdo/mame_cabinets.html).
These are much bigger and cleaner than other sorts I've found. You can merge them with other cabinet pics in one directory for a more comprehensive (/super) set if you like, or just leave them separate to ensure big clean cabs are all you see, albeit with more blanks. - Set up a definable in your MaLa layout.
Create a definable 1, and make the box as big as the largest expanse of cab you can tolerate. Save your layout and head over to MaLa to run it. - Point "definable 1" to your cab pics directory in MaLa's options
This is the part I can't remember exactly where to point you to, but I'm sure you'll find it. Mr Do's cabs are saved with the same names as the roms, so leave the option beside the path to the definable as ROM NAME or similar.
You should be good to go!

Thank you very much. That worked like a dream! Do you know of a tutorial for Mala? I went to the Mala forums and there is a tutorial there but you have to register to be able to download it and the site is all in german and I couldn't figure out enough to even register.
But I'm thinking that tutorial is probably in german as well so I don't know how much good it would do me even if I could get it. There are other custom things you can do with Mala but there's no where that tells you how to do it. The layout page on the Mala site is more a WHAT it can do instead of HOW to do it. Any suggestions?

The closest thing I know is a lovely effort by unclet, linked via the Wiki (http://wiki.arcadecontrols.com/wiki/MaLa). Even that, though, doesn't deal with MaLa layout, if I remember.
One day I might try and write something myself, since I agree, more documentation would be a bonus.
In the meantime, basically anything posted by Swindus or Loadman in this Software forum is helpful :)
I found this (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=59902.0) thread helpful at some stage, too, to get my head around GameLists, somewhat, too.
Still trying to reverse-engineer that RetroGUI layout to teach myself what the heck MaLa's animation capability is all about, but I've been planning to use it to simulate a Galaga starfield behind the gamelist. One day I'll get around to that, and hopefully it won't look like utter :censored:
-
Yeah I hear ya. I haven't found much written about Mala layouts at all. There is the definables and the custom along with the animation. Also there is something at the bottom of the list that says z-order? I'm surprised that someone would write such a customizable program and have no documentation as to how to utilize all that customization. It's a shame.
Thanks again for the info. If I find anything I'll let you know.
Encryptor
-
Custom is just for adding fixed graphic elements I think; gamecreature's layout (the one pictured on the Wiki page) uses one to partially obscure the snap and achieve a round "window".
Definables is basically anything that isn't explicitly a snap, marquee, control panel, etc - but technically you could use definables for that too, if you really wanted to.
Z-order is the depth - i.e. the way different things are layered. If you want a cab shot to partially obscure a snap, make it higher in the z-order. Videos are always top no matter what, which is just a limitation of windows + the way the program works.
I think cool programs where documentation is incomplete is the norm, rather than the exception! Maybe there's something auf Deutsch that I haven't found yet, but it would be cool to take the pressure off Swindus and help compile something ourselves. In the meantime, download any clever looking layout you find, take it apart to see how it ticks and it'll all eventually make sense I hope. That's what I'm doing.
-

He he... My 3 year would make a better layout than me. I've got no artistic Idea.
But intuative as I find MaLa Apps to be it is always good to have some docs and tips documented.
If you care share what you know/learned so far I can compile and add to it ready for Swindus to post ;)

how about starting a Mala wiki? :)
I can find a host if there's interest.

Maybee we should resurrect that idea.
There used to be one 2 years ago.

:applaud: Might also be time to start a dedicated thread for the idea, rather than left this one drift further :)
I'll try and put a suggested outline of wiki pages together in the meantime and post again. Is there any reason it couldn't be an extension of the BYOAC wiki?

I reckon just use the BYOAC wiki. It's very BYOAC related if you ask me.

yes - even better idea. a subsection on the BYOAC wiki makes a lot of sense.

Very cool Mala layout design. I am actually looking for a layout just like this. Would you be willing to email me a 800x600, 1024x768 and a 1278x1021 setting of this layout? I like how you incorporated the different buttons that will allow one to switch to different rom sets. Very nice. Thanks, Shane

Tis truly a work of artistic genius adding that marquee ;)
I just realised the v549e description (http://malafe.net/index.php?page=layouts) is wrong too .. it isn't a scalable layout... it is fixed to suit 640x480 and/or 1024x768 ! The lesson is... never upload when sleepy, no matter how insistent the nagging gets ;)

Yeah your wife sure does nag :laugh2:

how did you hide the black in the background on all the "cab" pics ..they have black in the background
-
1) In MaLaLayout, open the properties for the cab object (Definable 1).
2) Tick 'transparent'.
3) hope that the bottom left corner pixel of all your cab shots is the black background
4) any that aren't, and you can't absolutely live with it, throw a pixel in that corner with Floatyshop and re-save.
:D
-
also keep in mind that for some cabinet pics the 'transparency' translates undesirably in to the images. you may have to individually adjust some images to compensate as I have.
