Title: BYOAC on Palm 700p? PalmMAME?
Post by: MYX on January 27, 2007, 05:27:53 pm
Hey all, I am looking at getting a Palm Trio. It has a web browser on it. It is not the small mobile web 2.0 thing like on standard cell phones. Has anyone who has smartphone (blackberry, Moterola Q, or Trio...) tried looking at accessing BYOAC (Forums) to see if it works? I am also curious about the BYOAC Wiki as well.

You mean the Palm Treo?

I have a T-Mobile MDA Pro (aka HTC Universal, Imate Jasjar). It's a phone/PDA and BYOAC works on that, but I'd say that a smart phone will have a screen too small to read a website like BYOAC.

It would be better with a mobile theme, but still.

Actually you could download a Palm Treo skinned Simulator and see for yourself if it works. You have to register for it. Not sure how hard that is these days.

:edit: Now that I think about it. It could be the simulator is without web browser.

I periodically browse from my Blackberry using the WAP interface.

No login in that interface, but reasonably quick for keeping current. Not a preferred way to browse.

Cheers.

Sorry, my bad.

Yeah, I am still trying to decide between the 700p and 700w (palm vs. Win platforms). I will be pulling the trigger on Monday. I do not feel I need to be connected 24/7 to this site, but I was curious, you know for like if I am on a long car ride.

Can I look at ebay? I am going to be getting hooked up with the data plan and they tell me it is broadband on a mobile device, but I will believe it when I see it.

Maybe you should try a PocketPC or Palm forum. There should be someone there with a Treo.

The PDA/phone I have is comparable with the windows version of the Treo sort of. it has the same web browser at least (Pocket IE). ebay works fine on mine. But then my PDA has a 640x480 screen. Not really comparable to a Treo 240x240 screen. Like I said, BYOAC works fine too. Logging in and posting works fine too. Never tried paying with paypal or anything, but I'd say that should work too. Only problems I've had is with sites that need certificates, but even those usually work (in the end).

I have a flat fee dataplan too. It's reasonably fast, but it's hardly broadband.

Probably old news, but did you guys know there is a PalmMAME?
I was reading about it and it said that the roms needed to be in .38 format only. What does this mean? The earliest version of MAME I have is .59.

Hey, Patrickl, how do you like that phone?  I'm thinking about upgrading from my N-Gage QD.  I'm particularly interested in how easy it is to use it as a regular phone, hows the sound quality, etc.  And any other thoughts you might have on it.

I haven't seen the PalmOS MAME version. I looked ad XCade when I still used my Palm devices. It runs with only a selected set of ROMS.

I'm not to sure it would work though. I tried MameCE for my PocketGalaga (http://arcade.laweb.nl/PocketGalaga/) (which has an iPaq at it's core), but it was just too slow. So I switched to a SNES emulator.

Well I'm not sure what to say. I love my phone, but it sure isn't for everybody. There are plenty reviews. For instance: T-Mobile MDA review on InfoSync (http://www.infosyncworld.com/reviews/n/6142.html)

It's really quite big, but it doesn't bother me really. It can almost replace a laptop. The flat fee dataplan helps too. I'm online wherever I go. Yes I'm an internet addict. Because of that I would not have a phone without a keyboard. The full keyboard is a bit nicer than a thumbboard. I have a Clie NX with a thumbboard which works fine too, but the full keyboard is just much better. I even use it to take notes during a meeting.

The sound quality is great, but I sometimes miss a call. Not sure what happens, but when i accept the call it's just cut off. Guess I press a wrong button or so. It's a bit confusing because when you open the device to see who calls it will change screen orientation. Also, it takes about 2 seconds before you get the call through. That can be a bit annoying, but it's not really a big issue. I would guess a PalmOS phone would work faster. My old PalmOS PDA (which I use for reading e-books in bed) works a lot faster than my MDA Pro (which has a processor about 2 or 3 times faster) Windows just wastes a lot of processing power.

I'm waiting for the new model coming out. This will be slightly more compact, have twice the internal memory, have a second screen on the outside of the shell,  support HSDPA (which is claimed to be even faster than UTMS) and maybe have a VGA out. I have not seen offcial specs though. Not sure if these upgrades will be enough to warrant me buying a new phone. Especially since my MDA Pro still works fine, but still.

Weird, the link works fine for me. Can you click on the website icon under my name? Don't expect much it's just a few pictures of a tiny cab I made a while ago.

I have the "Q" and can browse BYOAC no problem.  I don't know about the pocket mame though, that's what I keep my psp around for. ;)

Cool, thanks.  I think I've got it narrowed down to the MDA or the Dash.  I spend a lot of time in a really noisy environment, so sound is paramount- but I want it to do neat geek stuff, too.  :D

Well you'll look plenty geeky when you put the MDA Pro on your ear
