I've been working on this 3D model of my cab for the last week, adding stuff changing things and the like. it's not final yet since I want to make it as ergonomic as possible. Easy access areas, able to change parts easily and really tough built. I liked the Q-Bert (http://img181.imageshack.us/img181/5381/qbert1ho1.jpg) design. And opted to go with that. Also influenced by the Pac-MAMEA (http://www.1uparcade.com/) machine of course without the rotary controls. I also liked X-Arcades (http://img181.imageshack.us/img181/6477/xarcade8656gh9.jpg) design of shelves within the cabinet and decided to add that in. Tell me what you think.
OH yeah, I animated them so it gives a better 3D view.
The pics are reduced in size for some reason. You can click on them to view the original uncompressed size. Or these links.

wow! complete with rumble feature! :-)
but to the point: that's looking quite big... what kind of screen are you planning on?
-
You really think its big? I've mostly been designing it with a certain TV in mind. Making the cabinet so it fits the TV plus has some extra space incase I plan to use a bigger tv in the future. Right now its dimensions are 28" width, 75" height and 40" depth. It all fits within the confines of that yellow border box on the pics. Well, all but the casters. The red cylinder as a front foot represents the swivel radius of the caster I plan to add.
I actually think 28" width is kind of small but I opted for that width since that's the limit some of the doors in my house will allow anything to pass. the Marquee was originally a few inches lower. But when I measured it, it seemed too close to my head. Like I could bump my forehead on it. Perhaps I should pull it back a bit. I made the skeleton guy my height but I must be deformed or he's deformed cause hes not my exact size. I think I got longer legs.
I have to keep in mind that this cabinet has to be assembled in a specific order. With all the features I'm adding in, doors, hinges, pull out keyboard, easy pull out plexiglass, back side drag handles and such, it's getting kind of cramped. So I have to make sure I assemble a certain part completely before I add a part that will make the previous part unnaccessible to work on.
Here's a side pic. You'll see it's made so the monitor(big red square) fits and has space to fit a slightly bigger monitor. Still have to work out a good way to hold the plexiglass.

lol, rumble feature. ;D

Stop that skeleton from humping Q-bert!
Nice model, efjayel. I wish I had some talent with 3D modeling. I like the shelves underneath. Those will be used to store your various CPs right? ;D

Nice design so far. The screen size looks a little large since your opting to have an integrated control panel. Your face will be very close and you'll have a tendency to pan as your playing your games. It could be the drawing that is misleading, but it's something to consider.

well, i've been toying around with rather small cab designs lately, so perhaps my perception is way off... I just obtained a whole bunch of touchscreens, al 16" or so, so large cabinets are not in my immediate future i fear...
so, it could be me :-)

Yes, I already looked into that. The reason I decided to have the screen practically straight up, is so onlookers could easily see the screen during a MAME party. If the monitor is sunken in, then only a few people standing right behind the players will get to see the screen. And your right, when I did a test of how close it would be, I did end up kind of panning on the screen. I probably will sink the monitor a bit or come up with something else.

Rofl.
You know, architectural wise, any other controls would fit in those shelves. My current CP is supposed to have a hinge so it can be opened. But now that you changing controls, I suppose I could. Or at least it game me the idea that it doesn't have to be on hinges. Perhaps I can make it so it pulls out.
But originally I added the shelves for game consoles. Of course I would have to buy the adapters. I'll probably do that but the only system I'm curently looking into is the Dreamcast. Until they make Street Fighter 3 and MvsC2 work on mame, that will be my only other choice to get to play them.
As for the cab being big, perhaps it is a little big. But trust me I tried to make it as small as possible with all the options. It was originally smaller but it wouldn't have worked adding the parts so I HAD TO make it a little bigger. My concern is that I won't be able to get it into my room once its complete since there a is a hall leading to my room then a miniature hall after that. :hissy:
I really don't think I want it in my living room.

I'm curious to see what you come up with. I want my CP to be swappable but not sure how I want to achieve that.

Ah, great idea.

:applaud:
Yay for another Dreamcast player! I was sooo upset when Sega dropped it. I bought that system strictly for Soul Caliber. But I also got House of the Dead and a few other games, including racing games. Bought the guns and steering wheels as well. Then Sega announced they were abandoning it and virtually no more games came out. :'(
The Dreamcast is the one console I want to hook up to my cab.

My cabinet width (not including my CP) is 27.75". It was built with 5/8" MDF and my monitor area is 26.5" wide.
I'm using a Sony 27" CRT TV for my monitor which is 26" wide, and I added the 0.5" so the TV woul have some room on the sides to move in and out.
This is about as big as I would go. If anything I might be a bit too large on the screen size.
Since I'm still building my cab, I haven't tried playing on it yet but I've noticed when test fitting the TV, it seems somewhat close and in your face.
-
Yes, mine seems to have that problem as well. I'll see if I can sink the monitor in a bit or something. But knowing me, I'll probably just leave it the way it is.

I like your drawing with the skeleton playing lol
