Why? Was it easier to glue that stuff on than to paint? I'm also befuddled by the recent rash of angled buttons. I have never seen this on an actual cab, but this is like the sixth cab I've seen with angled buttons recently.
What really matters is that it plays the games you want and is fun. I'd say it's a good first effort.
-
Considering your age, I'm impressed!
The hole in the front gives it an 'unfinished' look though :)
Are you planning for a drawer for the keyboard?
Never seen a furry cab before.. (I can imagine it would become a real mess in a real arcade..)

the angled buttons... ah i dont know, just a layout
and for the fur i just cut and stapled it ;D

for the keyboard im just going to cut a back for it to separate it from the rest of the cab.
do you know how hard it is to do the keyboard hack :P

They aren't particularly hard, just really not worth it IMHO. You can get a keywiz for $25, and you'll probably spend at least half of that rounding up all the tools and materials for the hack.
On the other hand I kinda liked building mine. Here is a good tutorial on building one:

Nice job on the cab too. Sucker sure is black ;D
ps. by the way thats pretty good for 14. My 16 yr old son couldn't have done it! :P
-
Good job dude!

Shag. How appropriate. So retro. ;D ;)

behold the ghetto encoder ;D ;

i had a project box layin around and a 120v jumper block ::) but hey,it works!

Just be sure you keep the roomdoor closed if you have a dog or cat, it might rape your arcade :laugh2:
You should call it Gorillacade, cool :applaud:

Sure is a unique cab. Great job.
I'm also befuddled by the recent rash of angled buttons. I have never seen this on an actual cab, but this is like the sixth cab I've seen with angled buttons recently.
Didn't Neo Geo systems have angled buttons? I plan on angling my own, actually more of a curve. It fits the fingers better and I'm hoping it'll be more comfortable. But, of course, everyone's hands are different.

I guess a little, but it was really more of a curve with a slight angle. It looks like more of an angle because of the thumb button, but look at the other three, it is a very slight angle between those three. This cab and others I have seen are more like an ergonomic keyboard. It may be very comfortable, I've just never really seen it on a cab until recently.

i put them like that because its more confortable,
i use my pointer and middle finger and your middle finger is (supposed to be) longer than your pointer. and thats just the button scheme i thought of and it can be sort of universal...
i got those for most games because there easy to get used to and the one on the left for galaga and centepede 8)

Don't really mean to knock it as I haven't really tried it as the saying goes. I'm definitely a big fan of comfort, but I'm also somewhat locked into the old standards. I guess once I get around to building a test panel I may as well at least experiment with the idea.
In any case, great job on getting a working cab started/half-finished.

Hate to be mean, but its ugly. But for being 14 and actually getting all this done, I say good job.

Well if you hate to be mean then don't be. ::)

I hate to be mean too, but that is true. And I'm 15 with no job. It would be better next time to buy a used cab for 50-100$ I think (like I did). My project is coming out to about $200. That's not too much. And it looks quite purty, if I do say so myself. (I'll upload pics when I finish of course, not yet.)
But I must congratulate you, I did take the easy way by restoring an original. At least yours is hand made! :D
Whatever floats your boat, I guess. ::)
(or finds your lost remote).

Personally great or not. Thanks for sharing. Ive never seen a furry cabinet before and well now I can say I have. ;D
-
I was worried when I clicked on this thread that this was a cabinet made by one of those creepy "furries" (my curiosity got the best of me, so I clicked). The fact that it's not, makes this cab a 10 in my book.
I case you don't know what I'm talking about. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Furry_fandom (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Furry_fandom)

What is it with the noobs these days ? Don't be half-assed about it. If you are going to be mean you should REVEL in it -- pretend that you are a Canadian realtor.
OTOH, I am not going to be mean.
It is impressive that a 14YO kid had the desire to build a cab. Even more impressive that it isn't a total VapourCade or NonCade (heck, I haven't got my Vertical MAME done yet and I had all of the components on hand). And most impressive that he was willing to share.
As for the cabinet itself, I see it as a sort of homage to Sasquatch with the design (kinda looks like Arcade Paradise I) and fur ... and I can respect that.
Cheers

You need a cutout of Mrs. Kensington next to that cab...
Oh behave!

Well the way I saw it, I didn't want to be mean but I did want to be honest. And my only option was to add a disclaimer before I based my opinion. I mean, what was I supposed to do? Lie that I liked it?
:soapbox:
And yes it is good for having only used scrap and very little money. But honestly, for that small budget and wood, I would have just made the control panel only.

Say nothing? :dunno

I would have killed (ok perhaps not killed) for something like like that back when I was 14. It is far better than that useless Atari 2600 joystick we used to have to use at home. I cringe just thinking about it.
-
i was going to ad that i liked the games at martys playland and wanted to build a machine at my house but my internet wigged out on me :(
and i dont really care about what some guy miles away from me says ::), but it would be better with some constructive criticism ;)
really, you people dont have to be nice just cuz im a kid
(hate being called that ::)).
and let me remind you its NOT done yet
-
So you said you build this from an old arcade cab? What cab was it? I don't event recognize that it used to be a cab. Did you cut a whole lot out of it or something?
I'm excited to see the progress on this thing. Good work!
-
Good work!
Do not mind the ancients...but post more pics :)

oh yea... ITS FURRY :laugh2:
Right on, my friend. Glad to see I'm not the only one who sees the merit of using fur on an arcade cabinet. :applaud: Congrats on your first cabinet! If you have a cat, keep an eye out so they don't decide it's a scratching post. I had that problem for about the first week after I moved my cab into the house.

Do you have pics of your "furry cab?"
-
Heheh, now THAT's an original looking cabinet. Next thing yah know, there will be a leopard skin cabinet.
Props for being 14 and owning one of the few furry cabinets on the planet.

Have you thought about putting something in the panel that lies just above the CP and right below the monitor?
I think if you embellish it with some graphics, even part of a poster, it will be a welcome addition. Just find something that will draw the player "into the monitor" so to speak.
Right on!

Any changes? Or are you just playing?
