Title: where can I get striped wire? (wire with 2 colors)
Post by: rockin_rick on January 19, 2007, 09:28:24 pm
Where can I get some striped wire - the wire that is one color and has a (different) color stripe down it?  In 16, 18, and/or 20 AWG stranded that is in spools of 100ft or less each.  I can find/get solid color, but don't know where to get the wire with the striping.  Having more color varieties would make wiring a CP a bit simpler/less confusing.

Thanks,
Rick

amphinol 25 pair wire that they use for PBX installation have a brazillion different colors. Call up a local PBX VAR and ask the install guys if they have some scrap you might be able to have. Now, it is only single strand wire so you will want to treat it carefully while you are wiring the CP, but that stuff is great. I use it for building my gizmos because of that exact reason. You can easily sort out problems because you can trace out wires by colors. If you can get about an 8 foot piece you will be good for years.

Thermostat wire is also good. Comes in 2/3/5/7 strand if I am not mistaking.
all color coded too! Its not braided though...its solid core...if you are looking for braided then pass on the t-stat wire.

Speaker wire?

No, not speaker wire.  The wire that I'm thinking of is a single wire (hook-up wire) that is a color with a stripe of different color down it.  I've attached a pic and the wire is like the wire in the upper left - the black one with the white stripe.  Car stereos often use these on the speaker wires for the negative of each speaker (eg. white with black, grey with black, green with black, purple with black) and the amp turn on (blue with white).

Painless Wiring (http://www.painlesswiring.com/webcatalog/2007Catalog/catview.php?SearchField=24) sells 25 and 50 foot pieces of striped wire, the other alternative would be using wire markers.

Thanks for the link.  I checked it out and it's $16 for 50 ft.  Ouch.  Getting a variety of colors would be costly.  Perhaps there is somewhere else to get it a bit cheaper?  Otherwise, I'll just do without!

The problem is unless you buy quantity nobody will stripe it for you. There are alternatives, most wiring supply places sell wire marking kits which are adhesive number or letter strips that you wrap around each end. You can also stop by a hobby shop and pick up a few different paint markers and use them to color code the wires. Electricians do much of the same thing with colored electrical tape when wiring up a breaker panel.

Or you can just do like most BYOACers and wire the whole cab with red. ;)

I went to Frys and for a few packs of multicolored wire. The packs had 25ft of white, black, yellow, green, and red. I then went to Home Depot by Kinevals recommendation and got some doorbell wire. (Blue) They have lots of nice colors in DB wire.

There are alternatives, most wiring supply places sell wire marking kits which are adhesive number or letter strips that you wrap around each end.

The problem here is that as the adhesive gets older, they start to come off the wire. Then you have lots wire wrappers sitting on the bottom of the CP.  :P
In the past I have made a little map of what wires went where and why. (I build gizmos too). I usually try to keep with  standards (green-ground, red - +5 or positive voltage, yellow - +12 or other voltage...)

Cut the outer jacket off Cat5e or (better to use) Cat6 cable.  Easy to find, 8 individual good wires inside, half of them are striped.
