This guy (8liners) is always selling these "Galaga/Ms-Pacman" sticks...I wonder if they would mount in 3/4" wood CP's?
Anyone know? I think these are the Happs ones.
oops! forgot the link: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3216992332&category=3945
Thanks.

They will fit, but I think they are made for a metal CP.. many have just routed out under the CP so the stick isn't too short and travels right. That or -- less economically -- buy Oscar's mounting plates (or make your own).

Does this model have a diamond-shape restrictor built in for the 4-way feel?
-
I'm wondering the same thing...

Those Happ 4-ways are definitely made for a metal CP.
The Happ part description says: "Shaft length for metal mounting only"
I put them into a 3/8" CP and the shafts were really short. I'd go with routing underneath to make them stick up higher.

Has anyone ever tried mounting these from ABOVE the CP? You know, just route out a square the same size and depth as the sticks base, then mount it from above? Seems like this would be super easy to do and would give great results. I'm considering doing this myself but was hoping someone else already played guinea pig. ;D

Someone probably has tried this before, but I wouldn't.. if you plan to put art over your control panel, you'll have to make a choice between not covering the joystick base and never removing your joystick :P
-
I don't see any reason for that to be the case. If you can remove the lexan covering the CP, you can remove the overlay graphics since they would be exactly the same (same hole positions and cutouts).
-
That would depend on whether or not you adhesive the art or just lay it on, I guess.. hadn't occurred to me since I plan to adhesive mine.
Also, though, you'd have to be OK with removing pretty much everything to get the 4-way stick out (should the need arise)..
But I don't get it.. and seriously, here.. how is it in any way easier to route above the CP than below it..? Or is joystick height the main concern there..?
-
wtf kspiff! wHY DO YOU HAVE SUCH A BIG AVATAR IMAGE?
-
Yeah, this avatar is kinda big.. but at least it isn't wide so I have to scroll horizontally to read some msgs..
It was one of the default selectable ones here @ arcadecontrols, though.. and as to why, well.. Protoman rules.. they should make a Megaman game with just Zero and Protoman 8)

It's not an issue of ease, it's purely an issue of joystick height. Mounting the stick from the top gives you 1/2" more stick height which many people prefer. And, of course, if the stick is designed to go under a thin metal CP, then you'd definitely need to mount on the top if using wood just to keep the "stock" stick height.

It's not cheap but you could buy the Pac Man mounting plate for the joystick or make your own. Top mount the plate using a router and then mount the joystick from underneath. You get the right height and accessibility.
