Title: Silly serial LCD question

I have been looking at putting a serial LCD screen on my MAME project for displaying game stats, controls, whatever. I have found some cheap backlit 20x4 parallel LCD panels, but during my digging online I have run across information on a serial backback for LCD panels. Now upon looking that the pinouts I have come to the conclusion that a serial LCD is nothing more than a parallel LCD with a serial backpack.

Am I correct on this?

The serial backpack seems easy enough to build, there is a minimal amount of parts that go into it. If someone can confirm my suspicions, I will pick up a couple of the panels to play with and build my own backpacks for them.

You pretty much have worked it out.   ;D

I have some serial backpacks and some serial LCD's

The only difference is some of the more expensive LCD are easier to code for as they have built in scrolling and other cool things.

I don't know what you want to do with it but if its cab related life would be easier for if you either
1) Use a serial LCD that SILVER's (http://www.silverfoxy.plus.com/LCDGen.html) format supports
2) Use MaLa Hardware  (http://mala.arcadezentrum.com/hardware.html) with a  Parallel LCD (http://character-lcd-lcds.shopeio.com/inventory/catalog.asp?ACTION=2&cat=Lcds&sub=Character%20Lcd) as I do
