I recently won a contest where I acquired a custom made 360 arcade controller. It's very nice and extremely well built, with authentic joysticks and high quality buttons. Very nice. It has two joysticks, and six buttons. At first I thought it was a 2 player controller, but the dual joysticks are intended for games like Robotron.
Only problem is, I quickly realized that the controls were mapped all wonky. The left joystick is mapped to the directional pad, and the right joystick is mapped to the face buttons. This is of course, the dumbest idea ever. It worked ok for Dead or Alive 4, but that's about it. I was really, really hoping to play Geometry Wars on this thing, but Geometry wars uses the 360 joystick instead of the directional pad, so it just won't work out.
I want to find a way to switch the controls around. Before I take this thing open and possibly screw things up, I want to make sure I know what I'm doing. Is it even possible to map to the joysticks?

You won't be finding any use with that stick for Geometry Wars.
The way it is set up, it would work fine for Smash T.V. (maybe Robotron and some of the other similar style shooters as well, but the only one that would work that I have any experience with on 360 is Smash T.V.), but other than that the second joystick is going to just be sitting there unused.
There isn't any way to map the digital joystick to the 360's analog ones.

Your stick is (probably) mapped how we do them. The only way to do the 360 analog sticks bit is to buy a pair of analog sticks. They're ~$100+ each. Then you'll need to do some electronic work to match the pot values between the sticks and the 360 pcb. It isn't cheap, it isn't easy, and AFAIK nobody has done it yet... but it's possible.
The 360 pcb does work with MAME though.
