Title: Local Multiplayer FPS
Post by: sphetr2 on January 05, 2007, 03:43:45 pm
At my house, there is only one powerful computer, so my brother and I like to play. local multiplayer games. But now we want to play Halo, Quake III, etc. against each other. These games only support network multiplayer. Is there a "magical program" that will make my PC think that it is two computers (i.e., allow it to connect to itself. )? Or are there mods for these games that allow local multiplayer?

Thanks.

Local multiplayer?  How would that work, two monitors/mice/keyboards?

I've never heard of playing two player fps on a pc? Is that something supported by the game, or are you running two apps of the same game on two monitors? That is definitely one MONSTER computer if that is the case.

Maybe they'd have better luck just beating the piss out of each other for real.

No, see, that's what I want to do. Except I have 2 USB controllers. And I would probably be running Quake 3, since it has such low requirements (as opposed to halo).

But I've thought about that more and realized that a mod would be more realistic. Or I'll just buy Ghost Recon or another FPS with Coop/local multiplayer.

Chad, if I had a picture of you, I'd make a Mii for you and beat the piss out of it in WiiSports Boxing. :D

Buy an N64 and a copy of Goldeneye.  It will cost about $25 total.

Use some search-fu, they're out there.

"Dude, who is that?"
"Some guy from BYOAC"
"Oh"
"Yeah, he was a smartass, so I'm beating Mii up."

I liked perfect dark better, but you have to have the expansion pack to play multiplayer - which can be had for cheap used.

But there are no badass Asian midgets in Perfect Dark.

but there is the laptop gun, and dual weapons.  >:D

And you can play multiplayer against sprites that are actually fairly intelligent.

Man I suck at competition FPS. Especially Goldeneye.

I like Aliens vs Predator 2 & Shogo, both in single and multi. But the Quakes, Dooms, etc I can't get into.

I liked some of the mission-esqe things you can do in the newer Unreal games, like 1 team tries to steal a bomb locked in a moving car 3 cars away and the other team tries to stop them from getting over there.

Well, I decided to just download (*erm*...find that backup I made years ago) Quake 3 for the Dreamcast. I hope that turns out well. I don't really like console FPSs usually either, but maybe this will be different because Quake 3 is the farking shizzle!

Use some search-fu, they're out there.

Actually, I got that idea off of Colbert Report, he did the same thing with some other person. Can't remember who, though. Said he was the Chief Kicker of something...

You should check out Enemy Territory because its a really good mission-esqe style multiplayer FPS.  Its a few years old, but still has a large community of players and the best part is, its completely free.

Its full name is Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory because it was originally going to be an add-on for the game.  Luckily for us they only finished the multiplayer game and not the single player game, and after the project was cancelled they decided to release the multiplayer game for free.  And in case your wondering, you don't need to own Return to Castle Wolfenstein to run Enemy Territory.

Neat! I'll look into it sometime soon.

My current addiction is the MMORPG MapleStory. Go ahead and laugh but I like it.

If you are going to play with controllers you might as well find two used xboxes.

Yea, this thread became kinda pointless once I settled for controllers. But that's a good suggestion, because it eliminates the split screen.

Where? I've been a'searchin' for quite some time (not directly, but if I see one I ask how much it costs) and have been unable to find one. Are you referring to ebay, flea markets, or a specific store?
