I found a car on freecycle, a 95 Golf project, which was made for canada. What would be involved in registering it in the US?
-
You'd have to swap the engine, as Canadian cars only work with KM and not miles.
-
Very funny. New gauge cluster at most
-
Probably no different then registering any other car with no title, although I have no idea what that entails. Might want to head down to the DMV and see what they say (or maybe just search your states DMV website)
-
USS, can you loan me some money? You have to be richer than all of us with all the stuff you buy. :laugh2:
Seriuosly though, DMV requirements vary state by state. You are in NJ, I believe so your State probably has more strict guidelines when it comes to vehicles - at least I would think.
-
I found a car on freecycle
Freecycle items do not cost money. The list rules would dictate that the person giving him the car could not be charging him anything for it. He may have to pay a third party to move it but that's about it.
-
You'll probably need to take it to a VW dealer to have them change the cluster to miles from KM. If you do it yourself then it's automatically TMU.
If it doesn't have a title then you can get one from the DMV. They usually want a bill of sale from the previous owner. You may need them to create one saying you paid a dollar for it. If they don't ask for that then they may considered it an abandoned vehicle and issue you a title. It will show it was an abandoned vehicle, but since the car is older it doesn't really matter.
-
Unless someone still owes taxes on it, at which point they will not transfer the title away from whomever still actually holds it. Even if it's as little as a couple of bucks.
-
Why is he changing the cluster (Canadian cars have both miles and kms) ?
Where is the car physically ? Bringing it across the border might be a pain.
Cheers.
-
I wouldn't have to change the cluster, you are right. The car is in New Eqypt, New Jersey, about 15 miles from where I live.
-
Was this brought over as a track car?
Depending on how different the Golf models are, this could be a huge pain in the ass. I know a lot of folks who tried to bring over cars (mostly "tuners" like supras, skylines, etc) and its months and months of hassle after hassle.
If that car was brought her under the guise of being a track car, it'll be an even bigger PITA to carry it over to getting a real title for it.
Good luck.. its not exactly easy to bring a car across borders, especially in NJ
-
I could always part it if I couldn't use it. Owner said that I could do whatever I wanted with it. All it really needs is new pads and rotors.
-
A friend of mine brought a Ford Mexico(Escort) from England.
He was bringing it over to convert it into a vintage race car, they told him European cars can be used for racing but they can't be registered for daily drivers. It was an emissions issue. I don't know if this is a Illinazi or federal rule, I also don't know if this applies to Canadian cars.
Make sure you can register it before you get it.

It was my understanding that the Nissan Skyline is not street legal in the US due to emissions. I'm not sure about other cars. You sure see alot of Lamboghinis and Ferraris on the Florida coast area(I consider seeing 3 or more on one trip alot ;)) so they must be legal.
I felt like turning 2Fast2Furious off after that utterly stupid scene with the guy finding a rusty, old beatup Skyline in a junkyard. Talk about a joke.
-
I figured it was provided by the cops, seeing as how he was a cop and was using it undercover and all. They would probably have a huge stockpile of old ricers seized after drug arrests and street racer arrests.
-
If there were taxes then you would have to pay clear back to when it was last licensed. Could be why the guy is giving it away for free.
Rumor has it that the Skyline will be coming to the US under the Infiniti line.

If you are referring to the Skyline in the movie, he was actually on the run before he got the car.
I guess the scene I am talking about was an extra on the dvd.
-
I know little about cars like that... I figured you were talking about the burned out junker he brought in on a flatbed to take the place of the green car he lost and then the Chinese guys destroyed before the bald guy "took possession of it".

The burned out junker was a supra turbo with a 2JZ-GTE engine IIRC...the skyline was owned by a different member of the club...or whatever.
that movie sucked
-
Ah. It's a good DVD for pushing 5.1... beyond that, yeah, kinda sucked.

Those cars are modified to be U.S. street-legal, emissions-wise. Remember, you're talking about a high-end dealer with big money customers who don't care about what has to happen to make it legal to drive, they just want to be able to show off their wealth.

No, I am talking about the second movie. There is an intro montage to the movie that shows the lead guy racing his way across the country. At one point, he see's a Nissan Skyline half covered by a tarp, with about 50 years of rust covering the whole car. He hands the junker guy a wad of cash, then he fixes the car up. Finally, you see him drive up to the opening race in his 200,000+ Grey Skyline.
-
I also never watched the third movie. The "redneck in Japan" plot line was all I could stomach.
-
Ah, we assumed you meant the first because you used the title to the first.
-

No, I was right.
The first one was called The Fast & The Furious. 2nd one called 2fast2furious. Third one The Fast & the Furious: Tokyo Drift.
-
Doh... you are right. My bad.
-

The car I was talking about was a Ford.
You sure see a lot of Fords in Illinois, just not the ones built for Europe.
-
He's pining for the Fords.

The current G35 coupe IS a Skyline, its just badged differently for the US. They plan to bring the Skyline nameplate over for the next generation however.
The Supra is also coming back, and there are rumblings that the NSX will return to the US as well.
All of the Japanese mfrs are contemplating bringing back their performance lines now that they've trounced the US car market. I think its about time, especially for Toyota. They have no performance vehicles at all, which should change if you ask me.
-

In that case the Nissan 350Z is also a skyline.

Not really. The Z is on the same platform and powertrain, but the Japanese Skyline literally IS the G35 with a "SKYLINE" where "G35" is on the G. Same exact car, save for safety feature differences for JP/US.
The G35 and Z are sister cars, but they aren't identical.

Ah, I figured you meant the Skyline and G35 were just the same platform, I didn't realize they had the same exact interior and body styling.

ah my bad...I don't think I actually watched the second one...just started it and turned it off. Oddly, I actually kinda enjoyed the one in tokyo......(lots of eyecandy >:D )
The junker in the first movie was def a supra though...I think the stole the engine and stuck it in a diff car or something.....
Oh, and :laugh2: :laugh2: :laugh2: at being able to find a "junker" import skyline to resto like that.....
and PDB is correct to a point re: G35 / Skyline...the JP Skyline has the "same" engine however, but it is tuned very differently....and IIRC the JP version is available as a 4door only, whereas the US G35 Coupe is only 2 door....
go figure

They both use the VQ series engine IIRC, but yes they are tuned differently. It's not a massive differenece in hp though if I remember.
There's a coupe and a sedan version in JP, just like the G35 here in the states.

The "reported" HP is very similar, but the actual HP of the JP version is much higher....
you are correct, there is a coupe and sedean version of the V35 skyline (and g35)....I was thinking of the next gen car. Too bad the skyline has gone "soft" -> no GT-R version....
:lame:

Well, considering the US is supposed to get the "Infiniti GT-R" in 2008, who knows. You can always go buy an import prev gen GT-R if you have $40-100k burning a hole in your pocket.....

Well in that case, go buy me a R34 Skyline. You can keep the IS. :applaud:
