Title: Wallmount Jukebox
Post by: Rich on January 04, 2007, 07:14:17 am
Just about finished. Waiting on Happ to send one, back ordered switch. That's why the controls look off-center a bit. But it's up and running with SKJ 4.0!

The amp was ripped from a set of Harmon/Kardon Model HK195 pc speakers. It has an output for a sub, but I didn't install one. I was very surprised that the amp could actually drive the speakers I used.

The speakers are a brand I never heard of before. I started with the Sony Xplodes but when I saw these, with blue LEDS already installed, in Walmart I just couldn't resist.

I just checked and they're not on Walmart's site though. I'm not an audio guy but I really couldn't tell the difference between these and the Sony's.

The neon lights are actually liquid neon lights. You can't tell in the pix, but they work kinda like those plasma balls you see everywhere. Cheapest, in stock at the time was from geeks.com. Here's a video of them in motion.

Switches are all from Happ Controls.

iPAC for button controls.

The PC is an eMachine 900MHz Celeron with 384MB of RAM. Only a 20 GB hard drive for now.
I have a wireless PCI card in it, since it lives in my poker room which is attached to my garage, so I can add mp3's from my office pc via a share. Installed a VNC program as well as LogMeIn for complete remote access.

Cabinet is my own design, which as you can tell is nothing fancy, and made from 1/2" MDF, spray painted metallic black. I actually could have made it a little smaller but I was afraid I'd over look something and then have something not fit. My wood working skills are still in there infancy. :P

Got the marquee printed from Mame Marquees and backlit with a fluorescent lamp. Not real happy with the light though. It seems to wash out the blue in the marquee giving it more of a purple color. Maybe some sort of white LED bar would be better?

Looks great. What kind of speakers are you using? Sub?

If/when I do a Jukebox, I want it to run on tokens. The experience just isn't the same without the sound of coins going down the chute.

How many folks can the poker room hold??  had 24 in the basement for our new years tournament.  I didnt make the final table of that one, but I did win the other 2 tournaments that night, so even covering the my wifes entries (talk about dead money)came out ahead :-)

Jukebox Looks really good.

Just a single 10 seat table I built last year. I think I can squeeze a second in there if I turned them sideways, but it'd be tight.

Yea I like when I cover my wifes entry and she wins and doesn't even give me back the entry fee!!  :hissy:

hey, awesome jukebox. One of the best i've seen on here yet. If you don't mind could you explain how many buttons you use and what purpose they serve? I'm thinking about making a jukebox also and an just curious about your design. thx

From left to right....
The yellow button puts the juke into random play mode. The 10 white buttons are numbers 0-9 for selecting albums/songs. The small red button clears the last number entered. Arrows keys scroll through albums. And the back ordered button I mentioned will bring up a genre menu once I get it! :hissy:

I then use the shift function of the iPAC to control the volume with the arrow keys, clear the entire playlist, pause, etc. Basically any function I'd like but didn't want everyone messing with, I put in shift mode.

Not seen in the picture, on the top, back right corner are two more switches. One is a momentary to turn the system off and on. The second is a standard type that allows me to turn off all off the lighting, marquee, neon, etc., but still have the pc up and running. I did this so we can access the music across the network from other pc's and the Streamium in the fam. room.

I had to throw a relay in the jukebox in order to get it to power off/on with that switch or with the pc is on/off. The coil of the relay is 12v so it worked out nicely.

thanks a ton!
Great info, one last question though, how would you go about allowing people to search for a song? I'm guessing it's basically impossible with out a keyboard.

Yea no searching but the genre menu helps in narrowing things down.

I take it you used a CRT, not an LCD monitor?
How did you mount it to the wall?
Looks great.

Actually it is an LCD. Total dimensions are 3' H x 2' W x !1' D.

To hang it securely to the wall I took a piece of 2x2x36 and ripped one of the corners with a 1/2" router bit. Then I cut the piece in half, flipped one half onto the other which made it interlock. Attached one piece to the inside top of the juke flush, and used 1/4" toggle bolts to attach the other piece to the wall. That wall though has 1/2" particle board behind is though. I'll take some pixs of the hanger when I take it down next. Which will be when Happ gets that switch to me that I've been waiting for.

How about using a blacklight bulb behind the marquee, maybe that will help with washing out the blues.
